No... they aren't and they should be in the game as they are common. But flying squirrels are exotic and maybe shouldn't be as a result of being so.

Well maybe uncommon is better word.
Exotic animal in one part of world is mundane animal (even if it looks pretty) in other part of world.

vampire bat->species myths and so on (stories etc.); myth of the vampire/equivalent, "vampire culture" if needed.

You certainly have that backwards. I think the nearest squirrel to me, outside zoos, would be 7 hours flying time away! I assume they have them in Asia. Flying Foxes are much more common, in some places they are pests.
The only problem with vampires is that in some cultures they are bad and hunted and killed. While in others they are good and are sought out as healers.

Flying foxes are basically long-snouted bats. They aren't flying squirrels. And Australia is... special.

Not too many the latter. And can they really be called classical 'vampires' at that point? Or are we talking about the bats?

Vampires not bats. In most of Asia vampires are not all evil, only some few. It is only Christianity and by extension The West which has problems with blood, except for that one special case involving wine. It is probably because of that one case that all other blood got a bad rep.

Who's to say what can be considered a common animal? True, some are exotic, like a Golden Lion Tamarin. But some may be considered rare or exotic only due to locale. If I were to see an armadillo where I live, it'd be rare, but for my niece in TX? Pretty common. Where I used to live we'd get bears all the time. Moved an hour further out. Someone in the neighborhood saw a bear and the cops were called, schools went on lockdown, etc. I think the animals you have now are fine.

No it is not. The American Grey Squirrel is considered a rodent in the UK - like a rat. Since it was introduced - via ships it has almost decimated our Red squirrel.

Same thing with snakes. In the west we consider them a symbol of evil and deception whereas in the East, they are considered symbols of beauty and elegance.

As my favorite magic designer Maro always says: "Squirrels are just rats with good PR."

Even rats can be cute if they aren't encountered in a sewer.

What exactly have you in head by small games?

If I can help, I could upload somes of the animals that I have found (well, at least their download links).
Since all of them are in the public domain, you simply have to ask.

I was going to make a python program to do most of the stuff as it is straight forward.

    1. Get and define the art for the unit.

    2. Define the unit and subdued unit.

They are nearly the same for land units except for:-
      • name (key and text) and help text. They use same pedia
      • unit combat classes and AI. Unit classes include some size information ie how big the animal is.
      • land subdued animals have an escorting unit (worker) added to the graphic in the XML
      • animals can be restricted by what terrains they can enter
      • subdued animals are
        • defensive only
        • can't reveal map
      • subdued animals can build some buildings defined by the individual animal
        • Governor's pets and menagerie
        • various Standards
        • Carnival and Cages with some extras
        • Elemental Myths?
        • Mythological Myths?
        • Zoo and Taxidermist
        • Does it have feathers? => Feather Worker
        • Does it have other special features eg ivory, poison/venom or decorative shell?
        • Are there and Hunter Camp buildings for this animal? Should there be?

Sea units are different. Early on only Tales get returned but later subdued animals get returned.

    3. Should there be a tamed unit?

    4. Define the Myth, Story, and Stories buildings and set the correct Story Teller unit to be able to build it.

    5. Define the spawn information including latitude and longitude it should spawn in.
I think that is about it.

I'd love it if the Swan would be added as an animal, if possible.

I remind you that we already have beavers both as a unit and as a resource.

We have them in as a unit? Not common enough then. Can't recall ever seeing one.

I have managed to build the Myth, Story and Stories, plus a few Fur Farms and a number of Cages with subdued ones. So there are many as I don't get to subdue every one.

OK, maybe it's fairly recently included? I dunno. I almost always get placed in Australia.
