SuBI1 - Masters of the high seas

Now why would our people want to sit around debating the merits of the sea, ( and if there is really a sea in the first place) when they can just go out and map that sea instead? Map Making of course! :D

Wow! Seoul is really going to be a power city. Get that wheat irrigated and the cow mined. A couple BG's mined as well, and we'll be spitting out settlers every 4 in no time.

I'm not normally a fan of tight builds, but I think our island beckons for it. I like the dot map too. Plus cyan can share that wheat when needed.

Great thought on Panama! :goodjob: That's the type of thinking to make a true Korean mariner out of us.

I hope you all don't think less of me, but I'm going to pass on the unit graphic mods. A great idea, but it will mess with my other games at the moment. I mod in scenarios to keep the core game intact. My ships will just have to be of some strange European design. BTW, I do like the ducks in the wetlands, though. Nice touch.

-0blivion-, have you played your turns yet?

I've busily been downloading the Asian ship files in readiness for the mobilisation of the great Korean shipyards. However, I've decided that the Tongkang would make a better Caravel, with the Turtle Ship as a Frigate (historically as well as aesthetically.)

With this aim, I've found that I can't instigate the Tongkang as a Caravel, because each and every time that I do, it always asks for CaravelFidget.flc or some other one. I've replaced the caravel.ini file with Singapore Tongkang.ini and renamed it to caravel.ini, and as such can find no reference to caravels in the file, yet still no joy. I've successfully done the same for the Baode, Junk and Turtleship yet cannot for the life of me get the caravel done. I'm at my wit's end.

Does anybody have any suggestions?

Since it has been a fw days, why don't you take the save file Balastulin? -0blivion- appears to have forgotten.

The 48 hours runs out this evening, so I'll wait until 2100 my time (which is GMT -11) before taking the word of the Koreans to this wasted land.

Things I'll be doing:

-building that city according to the dot map
-working the squares round Seoul in readiness for a settler factory (possibly whip that granary into shape...)
-push reasearch up to 100% so that we get to Map Making ASAP and grab for ourselves a nice lighthouse somewhere.
-do a bit of exploring northward
-maybe build a curragh if I have the time

By the by, am I on ten, fifteen or twenty turns. I don't wish to overstay my welcome after all.

OK.

I'm taking this baby on. If -Oblivion- posts before I send my save file in, I'll play after his turns, but for the moment, I'm going to play the ten directly after SuperBeaver kicked off.

It may seem a bit harsh but on the first turns, everybody's a bit impatient and we wanna get this baby rocking.

And lo it came to pass that the mantle of admiralty passed to Lord Balastulin-shi. He surveyed the lowly small lands that belonged to his rule and craned his wise-featured face over the scribblings that his scouts had drawn on the backs of the dried cow-skin parchment. "Hmmmm", he mused "I must, methinks, create some form of mab so that we may know exactly where we lie on this water flooded disc." Thus he summoned his scribes and decreed that they study mab-making with great haste. The scribes hid their smiles and suggested that first, writing might be more useful in the immediate future, that they could record the names of far-away lands (and learn to spell.) "Yes, yes! At 100% science. Care not I for my treasures, such that the coffers of my people's hearts be filled with love for our King, Wang Kong" whereupon the scientists admitted it would make but little difference, though would give them more pencils.

3000BC pre-turn:

increased science to 100%. No difference, still at 48 turns so cut back to 20%, still giving 48 turns, but 3gpt. Awaiting the settling of Pyongyang/growth of Seoul before changing. Woke the worker and the settler, lest they travel to the wrong place.

2950BC

Moved settler to Pyongyang spot as on the dot map all agreed. Worker roads current square prior to irrigating wheat. Science to 100% gives Writing in 34 turns. Warrior spots a goody hut down South.

2900BC

Pyongyang founded. Writing due in 25 turns at 100%. Warrior treads carefully toward the goody hut, eager to leave them sleeping and thus not alarm them as had happened in the earlier years. He lent a silent prayer to heaven and called upon the great power of his Master, King Wang Kong "Please mate. Don't give me any more bleedin' Barbarians!"

2850BC

Woohoo!!! Ceremonial Burial is bestowed upon us from our friends in the South. Doubtless a gift from the Gods to lend dignity and humility to the prayers of our people...

2800BC

Worker completes road. Repairs to wheat square to irrigate. Warrior continues to the Southern mountains.

Lord Balastulin went to inspect the beauteous city of Pyongyang and was alarmed that the people were building a lowly warrior "Is it for our skill on land that we are known as Koreans, Masters of the High Seas?" he mocked "Who is it that threatens us from land? Do we not wish to make friends of the waves? Is it for the greater glory of loving land that we create this foul, stinking band of vagabonds, when it is manifest that our duty and destiny lies over the sea?", and yea the people (apart from those being trained as warriors) were filled with awe when Lord Balastulin laid out his design for a magnificent vessel, harnessing the powers of the winds and designed to delightfully dance upon the diamond-clad raiment of the mystical waters of the seas (though they knew not what 'Mystical' meant yet.) And word came to Wang Kong of his regent's powers and foresight and he was pleased.

2750BC

Worker set to irrigation. Seoul set to expand in one turn, though should be safe from riots due to military policeman.

2710BC

Southern Ocean espied by warrior. Turns Northward to explore possible bulge to the East. Writing due in 19 turns.

2670BC

Balastulin gets a bit of shut-eye.

2630BC

Balastulin gets a bit of shut-eye.

2590BC

Seoul MM'd. Labourer taken out of the fields and trained in the arts of science. Writing in 14 turns. This is only to be done for one turn so that Granary is produced before Seoul grown, ensuring that the granary is half full on the growth of Seoul.

Worker is set to road and mine square NW of Seoul.

2550BC

Scientist suffering too much scorn from his more learned compatriots and desires to work in the fields, reaping corn and feeling the warmth of the sun on his face. Scientist back to working the wheat. Seoul due growth in 3.

And so Lord Balastulin laid down, weary with toil and let his worthy compatriots take over the leadership of this great nation.

Writing due in 15 turns. Science at 100%. Granary due in 2 turns, Seoul growth due in 3 turns - watch for possible rioting - and Pyongyang growth in 2.

No pictures :p

Gah, Humbug :aargh:
Just noticed this now and realised i had forgotten. Bleh, too much work at school right now. Anyway, sorry about the time wasted, i'll just take my turns the next time they come round. Consider me skipped for the last round

Sorry about lack of picturosity. I will get my scribes working on't forthwith. Lazy scum. Always in the fields growing crops instead of helping out where it's really required...

And a screenshot.

I agree. It's always nice to have a view of the world at the end of someone's turn, just to get a feel for the island/lands we inhabit, size of cities, etc.

Quite the write-up there Balastulin! Good work. :goodjob:

Oh, and by the way, I see the save. I should have this played and posted by Wednesday night (USA time) at the latest.

The Story of Wang Kon - Chapter 2 - Admiral Balastulin
----------------------------------------------------------------------

Wang Kon was pleased. His people had prospered in this new land under him and Admiral Balastulin. To the north, they had found hostile land, full of swamps, mountains, and jungle. But to the south, was much fertile land. There had been some hostile groups, but they had been defeated. He now looked toward exploring the area to the north of his imperial throne. The south contained no major threats to his ambitions to control the seas, just a couple of barbarians. The south was guarenteed to be placed under his control. He was very curious about the Northernlands. Could they hold more than was currently known? No one knew, as the only scouting party that went that way mysteriously dissapeared. Only time would tell if this land could be made profitiable.

Anywhoo, now onto my thoughts. The land to the south looks good, and we don't have to share it with anyone, unless there is a hidden peninsula in the undiscovered coast. We need to focus on getting a warrior up north to scout the area. The curragh should be sent north to scout the seaboard, and gage the size of our island. We could switch Seoul to a settler after the Granary is done, as it will then by a decent size(4-5). We don't want it getting too big early, as we will then have to deal with civil disorder.

Agree. Though maybe we could build a warrior prior to Seoul vomiting settlers into the void, so that we can have a look up North?

Not sure of the mechanics. Perchance we could set Pyongyang to build the Palace as a pre-build to The Great Lighthouse?

I was thinking Pyongyang should build a warrior after its curragh. The warrior could be sent to Seoul for some MP duty to help with the settler push. Then it can get to work on a worker. Our next city, Wonsan I believe, could push out the second explorer after building the requisite curragh, of course.

Our first curragh should be able to get a start on mapping the north, I would think.

My thoughts:

If we want to build 4-turn settler factory, then the city must at least be able to build 8 shield per turn. It would be 7-7-8-8 (7+7+8+8 = 30 shield). That's tough. We can get 2 shield from the cattle, 2 shields each from each of these two bonus grassland if they're both mined. The irrigated wheatland doesn't offer any shield though ;( Let's wait for the city to hit size 6 (but DO NOT let it grow to 7th size, it'll empty the granary). So, that after the six-sized city builds a settler, it'll be reduced to size 4, it can still do 7 spt (+2 shield from cattle, +2 shiled from a mined bonus grassland, +2 shield from 2nd mined grassland, +1 shield from the city radius). So, I think it's a good idea to build 2 or 3 warriors while waiting for the city to hit size 6. Of coruse, these warriors can finally explore the land to the east (first) and then to the north.

Another thing I've been thinking about, culture.
Since we're aiming for domination victory, we need to build up our culture to fairly good size. We don't want all the captured cities flipping on us too easily if we have bad culture compared to theirs.
This shouldn't be a problem, since we can build libraries at 50% cost. I really think that Colossus and Lighthouses are rather important wonders to us.

And I've thought about governments, I say we should go for Republic. Our cities will be reeking wealth, since they're mostly coastal cities and these coastal tiles offer 2 gold (3 in republic). Don't forget that we're scientific and commercial, golds are one of priorities to us :)

Everything is looking really great so far!

I am thinking along the lines of SpikeIt. Pyongyang should start work on a Warrior right after finishing the Curragh. By the time the Warrior is done, Seoul should be able to finish a settler, so the MP duty shouldn't be needed. Seoul should even be able to start work on another settler after the first one is done, as it will have enough food and population still. Also, getting the Lighthouse will really help. Pyongyang should try to do that.

If we want Seoul as a 4-turn Settler spewer, we could build a temple in the meantimes, which would keep the scum happy, and then go from size 6 as a settler factory. Given that we're on an island (unless that eastern bulge becomes a peninsula to a greater landmass), an extra four turns to make Seoul a happy, cultural settler-spitter, wouldn't make too much difference. We should think about the next city producing some workers to clear all that nasty marshland up north.
