SuBI1 - Masters of the high seas

I agree with SpikeIt, we've done enough settling.

Any further cities will be badly corrupted and will be of no use, anyway. We didn't even got the Code of Laws yet.

But we should not worry about settling the rest of the south. I believe that any further cities than the Korean Canal will be, as well, badly corrupted.

I think we should hold that irrigation south to the Korean Canal for now. The two very productive cities, Pyongyang and Wonsan needs those mined grasslands. The Korean Canal should be able to grow size 3, MM may be needed (maybe it needs MP first).

We really need to clear those two marshes with game bonus.
Each game bonus gives + 2 food (yes, in Conquests, games now give +2 food). If we can clear these two marshes, we'll have to grasslands with 4 food each (5 each if irrigated). That future city will be very productive, even more productive than Pyongyang and Wonsan.

Argh, darn. These two luxuries (dye and silk) are claimed by the Dutch and English :(

SpikeIt,

I agree. I think that Eastern island is important, as it has a couple of resources and some desert areas which may eventually yield Saltpeter or Oil. I was trying to race to the Tundra Island because it was our closest source of iron.

Maybe reassign the workers to road South rapidly, so as to facilitate the settling of the Southern lands/make it easy for offensive units to get down there to chuck people off our island in the case of it being settled by others.

We have faith in you. Maybe we should also have a couple of thoughts about our strategy post-settling. Dutch are on a small island, and with a big enough stack of galleys...

Governments? Feudalism, Monarchy or Republic?

Have fun.

SpikeIt left from Hyangsan to learn from Wang Kon what the future held for the Korean people. He had heard of exploring boats and the peoples that had been found, but had not heard of much else. The Korean people were busy settling more jungle cities, which from
SpikeIt's point of view didn't seem wise. Having had enough of swamps and jungles and the mosquitos and strange diseases which seem to come with them, SpikeIt longed for the sea. No harbors had been built.

Upon arrival in Seoul, SpikeIt headed straight toward the palace to learn of Wang's plans. But as soon as he arrived, Wang was hurrying out the door. Something about having some tea
with Theodora and seeing where things went from there. ;) Diplomacy was not SpikeIt's strong suit, so he didn't inquire any further about this meeting. "Please watch things while I'm
gone, SpikeIt. Hopefully I won't be to long, but you never know..." And so SpikeIt, having not received any further direction, sat down for a bit.

Taking a look. Not sure why we dedicating three workers to clearing march and swamp. We need more workers and they need to be improving squares quickly. Switch Ulsan from spear build to worker. Same with Jeju, spear -> worker. Shoot me now, but I'm stopping the march clearing pair to mine a couple grass for the new city NE of Seoul. This city can be reasonably productive if we work it.

IBT
Barb shows up S of Hyangsan.

[1] 925 BC
Recall worker north of Pusan to mine land around it. We'll clear the marsh later for a coastal city.

IBT
Isabella has established on embassy in our capital. Barb moves south.

[2] 900 BC
Workers start mining outside of new city. Pusan warrior sent toward barb. In'chon switched to worker as well. Galley pulls up next to iron island and... see next turn.

IBT
Barb continues toward Korean land. Byz warrior heads into jungle fog.

[3] 875 BC
Taejon founded in marsh near both deer. Starts on spear. Mine near Pyongyang completed.
Dutch city of Maastricht on iron island. Aargh. Decide to let galley rest to build up power bar. Will head north of our island to move around.

IBT
Seoul settler -> settler
Forbidden palace prompt.
Korean Panama galley -> spear
Ulsan worker -> spear

[4] 850 BC
Seoul settler moves south toward the southern tip. Bugger! I had a worker on auto move from mine and he moved right next to barb! Thankfully I can vacate Seoul to protect.
I don't see the harm in this right nowso, ROP to Spain for 56 gold.

IBT
Barb in marshes vanquished. Byz lose to barb in NE leaving us to take camp.
Wonsan warrior -> harbor
In'chon worker -> spear

[5] 825 BC
Take barb camp and 25 gold.

IBT
SpikeIt upgrades the palace with a nicer structure.
English start Statue of Zeus

[6] 800 BC
Trade Liz Philosophy for Poly and 134 gold. We can research Monarch next if we want.

[7] 775 BC
Able to dial lux back one and decrease spending to get Lit in 3 at +1.

IBT
Byzantines start Pyramids.

[8] 750 BC
Buy worker from Byz. for 110 gold. Someone to clear the marsh!

IBT
Seoul settler -> settler.
Barb approaches southern settler.

[9] 730 BC
settler and warrior head to Ulsan to take galley of island to east.
Southern settler holds so warrior can protect. Heading toward forest on east coast (not forest off the coast!) Lit due in 1.
Portugal has Code of Laws at Monopoly. To get CoL it will take Philosophy, Polytheism and 125 gold. I hold for now. Portugal does know Spain who is even in tech, but she's short on gold.

IBT
Lit learned, start on Monarchy which will be powerful in a bit.
Jeju worker->library.
Barb does not attack settler/warrior pair.

[10] 710 BC
Switch Hyangsan from temple to library.
Move settler/warrior pair SE. Great. Barb camp on settler spot! If it survives, maybe we settle there.
Worker from Jeju moves west to mine ruins (its a bonusg!)

Wang Kon strolled back into the palace, glad to finally be back home. As SpikeIt moved to head back to Hyangsan, Wang Kon stopped him. "SpikeIt, nice job. Let's recap. You pulled workers in mid task from their jobs to work else where. You failed to get iron island. You've sent that same galley wandering the northern seas, and you now have a settler guarded by a mere warrior about to be whalloped by marauding barbs in the south. Do you have anything to say for yourself? Hmmm. Thought not. Good bye then."

Well, Monarchy is due in 30. We are up Lit on everyone. Portugal has Code of Laws and will trade, but its at Monopoly and we cannot get anything else for it at this time, so we hold.

Taejon and Pusan will be more powerful shortly with mines and connected to the main. Our slave worker is moving toward the coastal marsh spot to clear for a bit. Our galley/settler/warrior is floating around our island.

The SAVE

Nice work.

Apart from the Iron Island. I have to take responsibility for that one. No worries, just load the galley up with offensive units and take it?

You forgot to mention... Pyongyong, Great Lighthouse in 11! I reckon the next player should do some serious MM to make sure we get that sucker.

All in, nicely played. Do you think Monarchy beckons for us?

I think that we should have no problem getting the Great Lighthouse. But hey, if we get it sooner, then :D

When it becomes due in under 10 turns, I start getting awfully anxious, especially when we haven't met some of the other civilisations...

:undecide:

Nice work, SpikeIt.

I'm not sure about Monarchy. We'll go broke fast and we won't get science lead if we switched from Depotism to Monarchy due to the number of units we have. Our unit support will practically be halved. Monarchy will be okay, if we build marketplaces in our productive cities first, before switching to that government.

Will play it soon.

What about Feudalism until we get Democracy? Nice unit support, and Seoul will still be pumping out settlers. Our marsh people will be working faster (should they still be cuting their cubic yards of jungle still.) Iron is the key. We have to nab the site on that large island ASAP now that the Dutch gambit hasn't worked out. Though we'd have to wait for Astronomy to take advantage of it...

I reckon we should build some ships!

The Imperial Master likes your suggestion.

Lighthouse in 11 is about the best possible. All bonus grass are mined and the hill is mined (only 2 shield on despot.) Max pop of 6. So 11 turns it is. Even if we miss on the lighthouse, we should be able to flip to another wonder and take the lighthouse a bit later. Can we all say Great Library? But I think the Lighthouse is a pretty good bet.

Balastulin, no prob about the iron island. It just hurts when you pull up and stupidly forget to unload. Didn't matter as I would have been loading back up as the Dutch built the city on the IBT. But still...

Yeah. To the east it is for the iron. The Good Ship Find Me Some Iron floating around the northern Byzantine empire was hoping to spot a bit of iron on our rock. No luck so far. The settler and warrior heading toward Ulsan and the galley were intended to possibly be the first excursion to the east.

As for gov, I personally like Monarchy. Its not too crippling at this stage in the game. Its a powerful tech with high trading potential. And I doubt with our number of units, that support would be an issue. In republic, our lack of luxes, and the high cost of excess units would really hurt. Feudalism is an idea. I've never played it and its not available for a little while longer. But we'll be there soon.

One last thing. We haven't talked about it, but I think its worthwhile to consider a settler to grab the other two spice. And to get them all connected somehow. We are going to need them as we don't have much to trade as things stand right now.

I like Monarchy. I use it often now, only because I don't like the double unit cost of Republic. Are any other civs currently working on the Great Lighthouse? If not, then we have a sure bet. And yes, TGL sounds like a good idea in the unlikely event that we don't get the Lighthouse.

Nice point about Feudalism and the fast workers! I likes, yes.

Oh, as for needing astronomy, I'd have to check the save again, but I think we may connect. From the tip to our east, there is another island to the east, and then the "new, improved" iron island south of that. It may just connect coast to coast. And with the Lighthouse it won't be an issue. :D

Yes, the four movement on galleys is going to really help. :D

And then we can build more ships?

I don't really know that much about Feudalism either, so I think we should definitely go for that!

Remember, we have scientific slingshot...

Do you want me to ditch monarchy, and started researching on the needed tech to advance to the next age? If we reached the next age, we'll get a free tech - and it's possibly Feudalism.

What do you think?

[0] I decided to switch to Currency from Monarchy.

[1] England asked my curragh to leave her ocean. At the southern land, our brave warrior escorting the settler invaded and slaughterd all the barbarians, and promoted to veteran without a scratch :goodjob:

[2] Two barbarian galleys ganged up on the poor exploring curragh and sank it :(
Settled Paegam in the spot of barbarian camp spot.

[3] Nothing

[4] I made another galley loaded with settler and warrior, they'll claim the Iron waiting for us on that sizable island east of us.

[5] Our galley wandering at Byzantinian's ocean has finally came to its fruition, there's another iron at the mountain south of the Byzantine lands. Our redlined galley will unload the settler & warrior to claim that iron next turn.

[6] All the AI has the Code of Laws now. But lucky for us, Netherland has it but lacks Math, Philosophy, Literature, Horse Riding. Odd. But I traded the Dutch for Code of Law for our Math + 13 gold. Then sold the Mathmatics to the Byzantines for 206 gold.

[7] I think Seoul has done enough settling, Seoul: Settler --> Library. Taejon: spearman --> worker

[8] Settled Manp'O, which is the the city bordering the Byzantine Empire. It has the Iron on its mountain.

[9] Ulsas: worker --> harbor, and the Korean People are celebrating for King's success, and decided to expand his Palace.

[10] The Dutch build the Great Lighthouse!!!! :wallbash:
We are only 3 turns from the Great Lighthouse...Switched to Great Library from the Lighthouse :(
Settled Kaesong, it can reach the whale if it build 10 cultures.

What shall we do with the Dutch, my King?
