SW8 - Stupid Spacers!!!!

I couldn't play last night. This evening is wide open.

Turn 0 – 1000 BC
All looks pretty good. I’m pulling the archers towards Salamancha.
I was going to switch the warrior build in Rome to an archer but I understand the logic. Upgrade to legions.

IBT: English forces disperse.

Turn 1 – 975 BC
Moving new settler form Veii towards orange dot.

IBT: Barb galley goes down to our mighty curragh.

Turn 2 – 950 BC
Found Pisae on pink dot. Barracks.

IBT: Vikes finish the Pyramids and are going to work on the GLighthouse.

Turn 3 – 925 BC
We declare on Isabella.

Turn 4 – 900 BC
Three archers attack and we lose two. One spear left behind. Not smart.

Turn 5 – 875 BC

IBT: Iron hooked up.

Turn 6 – 850 BC
Upgrade 6 warriors.

Turn 7 – 825 BC:
Turn 8 – 800 BC

IBT: Four Spanish warriors and a sword move in towards Salamancha.

Turn 9 – 775 BC
Found Ravenna, barracks.
Found Hispalis, barracks.
Move 5 legions towards Salamanch.

IBT: Haha, the 5 Spanish units run away.

Turn 10 – 750 BC
Salamancha destroyed w/ single legion win.
We enter our GA

Settler, legions and other to move.
Make a deal w/ Isabella at your leisure.

SW - going to pound Isabella tomorrow
Vol - on deck and ready to finish the GA?
IroP - missed the GA by a whisker
JB - just entered the GA

too bad about those archers JB, but great on the GA.

hopefully we can become :king: before the GA ends.

Iron, Legions, Golden Age, Salamanca gone: good stuff!

Lots of good land over towards Spain, but as soon as we can get some techs, it might be time for peace with Spain, and focus on England next.

It would be nice to get some Temples out of our GA...

SW - up!
Vol - on deck
IroP - doing homework
JB - just played

again, i agree. we want the wars to be over ASAP. gives them time to heal before we come visiting again.

temples  maybe i've been playing with bede for too long ;)
i disagree. we can always up the lux. we can also build markets.

thats what i wrote, didnt i?

I began typing before your post was posted, SW.

Temples would be nice, not required. The happiness is only part of it, we're going to start falling in a deep culture hole, especially if we never build libraries or university.

I took a substandard attachment to take Salamancha. Three archers just wasn't enough.

A Despotic GA? Sorry about that. Again, not thinking.

Too much time in the sun this morning and not enough SPF 30. My arms and neck are toast. But the lawn looks great.

I got curious about exactly how much warfare we have left, and came up with a little list. Working backwards from Robotics (the deepest tech we need) with the fact that we can't get two techs in the same path in one trade/war, we can figure out what techs are needed from what war, and how many wars we have left. This should help when trying to determine when to end a war and begin peace talks.

The bold techs are on the critical path, they drive the schedule and cannot be gained any faster. The other techs can be gained earlier, but do not impact the schedule until the listed war. The blue techs we have. When all of the techs in a given level/war are ours, thats one less war we need before the end. The list is in reverse order so we can see how many wars we have left at any time.

I'll update this and cross out wars as we progress.

At this time, we have at least 20 wars left:
20: Masonry, Bronze Working, Alphabet, Pottery, The Wheel, Warrior Code, Ceremonial Burial
19: Mathematics, Mysticism, Iron Working, Writing
18: Construction, Currency, Polytheism, Philosophy, Code of Laws, Map Making, Horseback Riding
17: Monotheism, Feudalism, Engineering
16: Theology, Invention
15: Education, Gunpowder
14: Chemistry, Astronomy
13: Physics
12: Theory of Gravity, Magnetism, Metallurgy, Banking
11: Steam Power
10: Industrialization
9: Corporation
8: Steel, Refining, Electricity, Medicine
7: Combustion, Replaceable Parts, Scientific Method
6: Mass Production, Flight, Atomic Theory
5: Motorized Transportation, Electronics
4: Fission
3: Nuclear Power, Rocketry, Computers
2: The Laser, Ecology, Space Flight, Miniaturization
1: Robotics, Synthetic Fibers, Superconductors, Satellites

sw8 sw 750bc-

preturn - lower lux by 2 notches. start moving the new legions south for our english foray. 4 legions should be enough to whip the spaniards into peace.
settler goes towards the spanish peninsula.

ibt- Madrid gets THE ORACLE, and want ToA (next war....), Byz start the Great Bulb,

1- kill a spanish sword and 3 warriors. no leaders. run the pack away from the spniards towards Toledo.

ibt- kill 2 warriors on defence, getting an E leg and E bow.

2- Rome leg > leg, Cumae worker > rax,
GET a DOOR to the cave.
just moves. keep dodging the spaniards, clearing the way to our settler.

ibt- get booted by england.

3- Antium warrior > legion, movement. we have a lonely archer on the other side of england right next to a few workers. good.
upgrade a warrior for 60g.

ibt-

4- Veii settler > settler, Neapolis rax > legion, lose a legion. thats what happens when your too cocky.
settler moves towards england.

ibt- spanish moves toward Pompeii. no worries.

5- Rome legion > legion, take Toledo with a slave. no loses.
sue for peace. we get - Masonary, Myst, HBR and 246g. which is everything.
roll back and head for the white cliffs of Dover.

ibt- we get the Forbidden Palace message. maybe we should? :D

6- Pisae rax > warrior, build Viroconium > rax,
rush a legionary. need more workers. change some builds.

ibt-

7- more moves.

ibt-

8- Rome legion > legion, Veii settler > setter, Pompei settler > temple,
we want the english to run, so i declare. we have only a token force now, but so do they.
give her the bott hoping she declares.
she doesnt.
i do.
no kills, but our brave archer lands on top of englands Incense.

ibt- english run for the hills.

9- Cumae rax > legion, Hispalis rax > worker, build Lugdunum > worker, upgrade another warrior.
kill a brit spear. and cut that funky odour.

ibt-

10- Antium legion > legion,

ended the turns a bit messy, but were doing just fine.

consolidate. kill of all those annoying warriors. get a couple of towns. get peace. start on Byz again.

no dots for england, as not enough known right now, but we more importantly we need lots of workers. NOW.
try to squeeze some out.

pics are self explanetory.

(0) 550 BC
MM Rome for growth and still get Legionary next turn.

Change Cumae: Legionary in 9 -> Worker in 3.
Change Pompeii: Temple in 18 -> Barracks in 5. For upgrade or MP.
Change Revenna: Barracks in 9 -> Worker in 1. Really needs improved tiles, is working no tiles with shields now.
Change Hispalis: Worker in 4 -> Warrior in 4. We have workers nearby, I like getting these cheap warriors while we have cash to spend on upgrades.

Upgrade Warrior at Antium.

We have not built a single Spearman. So much for needing Bronzeworking early on.

Something that doesn't show clearly in SW's screenshot: the Byzantines have archers in English territory, about to pounce on Hastings as well.

(IT)
We defend at Ravenna from a English Warrior with our own Warrior, who takes 2 damage but gets promoted.
Spain attacks what must be a barbarian in the fog to the north with an Archer and wins.
England moves a Spearman and Settler into Hastings.

London becomes increasingly attractive:
SW8_550BC_Great_Lighthouse.gif

Vikings cascade to Mausoleum of Mausollos, and complete it:
SW8_550BC_Mausoleum.gif

Byzantines cascade to Temple of Artemis.

(1) 530 BC
Rome: Legionary -> Worker in 1. This place needs more shields, and we built a granary here for the 1-turn-Worker available at size 6.
Ravenna: Worker -> Barracks in 20.

Well one Legionary at full health and another missing 2 HP is not much of an attack force, so no major offensive this turn.

Found Lutetia, per SW's instructions. It starts on a Warrior for MP and future upgrade.

Send some Archers back to be MP, frees up Warriors to be upgraded. Upgrade Warrior at Rome.

Have 6 Legions heading to England in addition to the 2 already there. Should be enough to get Mathematics and hopefully a few of the Writing-derived techs as well. Everyone else is going to start building up a Byzantine task force. I don't pull much away from Spain, as we'll need a force there soon enough.

(IT) Vikings request an audience to offer us Philosophy for 190 gold. But thats now how we get our techs, now is it.

Our wayward archer deep in English territory is lost. He really stood no chance, that deep in.

The English Settler pair moves out of Hastings, which means there's one less defender and the Settler is easier to capture.

(2) 510 BC
Rome: Worker -> Legionary in 3.
Veii: Settler -> Settler in 5. Heads towards Spain.

Just moving around and getting into position.

(IT) England moves about randomly, often in the opposite direction they moved last turn.

The Vikings are building the Temple of Artemis.

(3) 490 BC
Cumae: Worker -> Worker in 5.
Viroconium: Barracks -> Worker in 4. This area (Spain) badly needs roads.

I upgrade another Warrior.

With one less unit in Hastings, it is time to strike. Our two Legionaries kill two Spearmen. Hastings is auto-razed, 2 slaves gained.

Stray unit clean-up: Kill Spearman, get elite Legionary. Kill Warrior. Kill Warrior.

Found Byzantium on the hill on our southeastern shore. Starts Worker in 10.

Time to check England for peace. If Byzantines are next, we can get at least Philosophy, Polytheism, and Map Making out of them. But we might also be able to get Construction and Currency by the time is over, so I try to get Map Making (and Code of Laws, which Byzantines don't have), in addition to the required Mathematics, out of England:
SW8_490BC_English_Peace.jpg

So we need Construction, Currency, Philosophy and Polytheism to get out of the Ancient Times and not have to fight unnecessary wars. But I doubt the Byzantines will have both Construction and Currency before we whack 'em.

With Mathematics, we could start the Statue of Zeus. No one else has started it, despite having had Mathematics for a while. Its unlikely the other continent has Ivory. I can't justify using the 3-turn Legionary 3.3.1 factory at Rome to spend 17 turns so that we can get 3.2.2 Ancient Cavalry every 5 turns. Basically, the SoZ sure would be nice, if only we didn't have to build it.

(IT) Spanish Swordsman enters Toledo's borders from the south. The English begin the Temple of Artemis.

(4) 470 BC
Neapolis: Legionary -> Legionary in 10.
Pisae: Worker -> Warrior in 5.
Hispalis: Warrior -> Warrior in 5.

England and Spain now have Construction. Hopefully they'll sell it to Byzantines soon.

Upgrade another Warrior.

(IT) Nada.

(5) 450 BC
Rome: Legionary -> Legionary in 3.
Toledo: Barracks -> Warrior in 10.
Pompeii: Barracks -> Settler in 10. We really need more Settlers to take advantage of our warring, but there's just not many good places to get them from.

(IT) Nada.

(6) 430 BC
Veii: Settler -> Settler in 5.
Antium: Legionary -> Legionary in 6.
Viroconium: Worker -> Catapult in 7.

Upgrade another Warrior.

About time to attack Byzantines. I look to have 3 Legions available to move onto hills or mountains next to Trebizond, Heraclea, and Smyrna.

(IT) Some Viking Warriors appear to our North.

(7) 410 BC
Upgrade another Warrior.

England and Vikings are now in Anarchy.

Change Antium: Legionary -> Settler in 5. Will be needed for Byzantine lands.

Next turn we declare and position on the hilltops.

(IT) Interesting. The Byzantines send a Spearman into our territory at Hispalis. Lots of Spanish movement. 4 swords, 1 archer and 1 warrior along the border.

(8) 390 BC
Rome: Legionary -> Worker in 1. Great Legionary -> Legionary -> Worker cycle.
Cumae: Worker -> Catapult in 10.

Found Brundisium in Spanish grasslands. Starts a Barracks in 20.

I ask Byzantine to remove their Spear, but they won't declare. So I declare on them.

I move the 3 Legions at each of 3 cities in.

The Vikings have 850 gold in their treasury.

(IT) Byzantines do nothing.

(9) 370 BC
Rome: Worker -> Legionary in 3.
Pisae: Warrior -> Legionary in 15.
Hispalis: Warrior -> Legionary in 10.
Lugdunum: Worker -> Worker in 10.

I upgrade a Warrior.

I kill the stray Spearman.

Battle of Trebizond:
Veteran Legionary kills Regular Spearman, takes 3 damage, is promoted to Elite.
Veteran Legionary kills Regular Spearman, takes no damage.
Veteran Legionary kills Regular Archer, takes 1 damage.
Trebizond is auto-razed and we get 1 slave.

Battle of Heraclea:
Veteran Legionary kills Regular Spearman, takes no damage.
Heraclea is razed and we get 1 slave.

Battle of Smyrna:
Veteran Legionary kills Regular Spearman, takes 1 damage, is promoted to Elite.
Veteran Legionary kills Regular Spearman, takes 2 damage.
Smyrna is auto-razed, and they had a Settler inside, so we get 2 slaves.

(IT) Byzantines land a Settler pair to our north, at the furs. Byzantines move an Archer from the south, that used to be in English lands.

(10) 350 BC
Veii: Settler -> Settler in 5.

Our Golden Age ends. But the effect is not noticeable.

I upgrade a Warrior. We have 27 Legionaries now.

England is now a Republic. Spain is now in Anarchy too.

Some notes:
  • We need to make Antium another Settler factory. Send workers there and get irrigating.
  • We still lack any cultural buildings whatsoever. It just our Palace with its 2 culture per turn sustaining us.
  • I left a lot of troops unmoved. The next player can decide whether we should whack Adrianople or head over to deal with the Spanish menace. I can't imagine Byzantines withholding much in peace talks with 3 cities lost, and we don't have Settlers to claim Adrianople's land now anyway. Remember, we need opponents that will keep the tech pace high.
  • 5 turns left on Peace with Spain. They're starting to mount units near the border. It could be bloody.

I always forget the save...

At this time, we have at least 18 wars left:
20: Masonry, Bronze Working, Alphabet, Pottery, The Wheel, Warrior Code, Ceremonial Burial
19: Mathematics, Mysticism, Iron Working, Writing
18: Construction, Currency, Polytheism, Philosophy,
Code of Laws, Map Making, Horseback Riding
17: Monotheism, Feudalism, Engineering
16: Theology, Invention
15: Education, Gunpowder
14: Chemistry, Astronomy
13: Physics
12: Theory of Gravity, Magnetism, Metallurgy, Banking
11: Steam Power
10: Industrialization
9: Corporation
8: Steel, Refining, Electricity, Medicine
7: Combustion, Replaceable Parts, Scientific Method
6: Mass Production, Flight, Atomic Theory
5: Motorized Transportation, Electronics
4: Fission
3: Nuclear Power, Rocketry, Computers
2: The Laser, Ecology, Space Flight, Miniaturization
1: Robotics, Synthetic Fibers, Superconductors, Satellites

Got it. I'll play today if I can finish my homework soon enough...

Hmm, I think I may just surround Adrianople, but not capture it. That makes them more willing to give us stuff, right?

Those Spanish lands really need to be developed. Hopefully the war can wait till after roads are built.

(nice map btw!)

Yeah, we're still really short on workers.

In an effort to make travel to Spain as quick as possibe, there are four sets of workers that should (in ~3 turns) make a continuous road from our core cities out to Viroconium and Toledo. Brundisium will have to come next. Should get good progress before peace treaty runs out in 5 turns.

Any thoughts on letting Neapolis grow and build the Statue of Zeus?

With some improved tiles, Neapolis will do nicely. Problem is, it has no improved tiles. More slaves!
