Tactics And Strategy: turns 0-50

Thanks, I'll amalgamate answers in the other thread. Feel free to post answers in there as well. And yes, pottery being done same turn as worker is handy

Should we make a thread where our moves for each turn are finalized/posted? If we are having difficulties already with only two cities, we are going to be lost when our empire expands.

Yeah, I think an 'actions' thread would be good, so we don't miss actual decisions amidst other discussions that take place.

I think we work the wheat while we build a mine on the gold. When the gold mine is built we start working the gold. Even if we don't reach pop 2 in that period of time I still think it is optimum. Once the mine is done the worker should begin to farm the wheat. If the city had not yet reached pop two at this time - after the when the farm is done it can work the farm until it grows.

I think the southern warrior should fortify and wait for the 2nd warrior as back up due to the bear. The northern warrior should follow that line of trees west.

The work boat should go north.

Tech. Archery if no horses. Otherwise writing and then pottery. I think getting a library asap is very important. While we need granaries, they can wait a few turns as we put our philo trait to good use. Building a library and running scientists (until we get an academy) before working cottages also is beneficial.

Here is my reasoning. Running 2 scientist puts out 6 beakers per turn and we will get an academy in 9 turns I think. Working 2 cottages would generate 3 commerce and therefore 3 beakers per turn. After 10 turns these cottages will produce 4 commerce. During these 10 turns our population would also likely increase by one more than it would running 2 scientists. The +50% from the academy is a greater benefit than +2 extra commerce from the cottages and one extra population.

It is good that we have a thread for official actions but we don't really have a process for making anything official. We risk having anyone post anything in the official thread which won't necessarily make the team's intentions any more clearer. Should we decide on someone to be the official poster in the official thread?

I nominate Kaleb.

Also, I have a question: Do barb animals automatically vanish when the first barbs warriors appear? Or do the animals that have spawned just walk around until they are killed off? If they vanish it would clear all those pesky bears out around the city 3 location...

We either need an official poster to take care of the official post system or we need to run everything through this thread first. Putting everything through this thread first could end up being redundant and frustrating. On the other hand, the poster might not notice everything and mess up a post in official thread before everyone else catches it and the turn is played. Another option is to have people responsible for only certain things like movement or cities. That lets them catch up on everything in their field and then put it in the official thread. That would probably be slower though.

Tech after AH:
horses available- Pottery
horses not available- Archery

I think this is pretty much what most people are thinking.

Warrior moves:
1. Warrior 1- move SW to forest and fortify. Will serve as a sentry to push back barb spawns.
2. Warrior 2- move S and the SW. If we go SW right away the bear will munch him.
3. Warrior 3- back to the Capital for sure (very important).

Worker actions: finish farm, then mine gold and build road on gold, then road SW of city 2, then cottages on the grasslands below city 2.

No , we need farms on those 2 grasslands, or the city will never grow. cottages for the plains. We need more food for city 2, or it will remain small.

Well that depends what kind of city we want it to be, production or commerce. Both would grow at about the same speed (unless you focused the production city purely on growth initially and worked mines last).

Production City- Pop 12 (max size before bio)
1 wheat farm
1 gold mine
3 grassland farms
3 plains farms
1 grass hill mine
3 plains hill mine
21:hammers:, 18:commerce: per turn

Commerce City- Pop 10 (max size before bio)
1 wheat farm
1 gold mine
3 grassland towns
3 plains towns
1 grass hill windmill
1 plains hill windmill
10:hammers:, 51:commerce: per turn

I think we should use the capital as the main commerce city, I will propose a city grid, where the two grasslands overlapping capital and city 2 are farms, so we can alternate food supply between these in growth phases. I would like to see city 2 to have more production capabilities, if possible, using more of those hills. I think the production city should focus on growth first and mines last.

I got a third proposal, seeing the two cities together.

Yeah City 2 does have great production potential with all the hills. There might even be iron around there too (or other resources). I do love putting cottages on rivers, and a couple of towns would go nicely with the gold. But maybe production there is best (if so though we need to get to the Syr Darya soon and spam cottages like crazy).

I think our capital should be a hybrid production/commerce city- especially if we adopt bureaucracy down the road.

Yeah, I think City 2 should be our wonder city, it is protected from most kind of attacks being locked in by those mountains. No foreign navy can see it, no barbarian can reach it and it is the last city to be reached by a foreign military force. I think we should build a Forge there too, which adds 1 more happiness for the gold.

I can agree to this strategy. We should head for writing right away, and make city 2 a research and wonder center.

Your logic on the case for specialists is good, but I would go for pottery first as it also gives something for our workers to do. We need to decide very soon, so who's going to set up a tech poll thread?

The 2nd warrior can move south safely as that bear that was seen can't be there already.

I nominate Kaleb.
Thanks, I don't mind doing this. If I am away, I'll nominate someone else instead.

We can have separate areas of responsibility later on down the line, as the empire grows, for now one thread should be enough.

Happy new year everyone...back from holiday :)
Welcome back! And yes, plenty to read :)

Kaleb

The workers can farm, mine and chop forests, they do not have to make cottages. I suggest we go for library as soon as possible, so we can leverage the gold when we have it.

We need granaries before libraries and cottages to tech while we expand...Libraries are expensive and useless so early...big mistake.

We need farms and mines in the East, as we need production capacity to migrate westwards.

Early on a libraries can produce the same amount of tech as cottages. Only later in the game do they become less useful. Also running scientists early on is especially helpful given our philo trait. Ill reiterate the +50% we get from an academy is similar to the tech benefit one would get from doing an oracle CS slingshot.

A library is 90 hammers a granary is 60. The difference is one chop or whip.

Our workers will have plenty to do even without the ability to build cottages. They need to build pastures on any horses that appear and mine the gold and farm the wheat around city 2. They also can chop forests and build mines around the capitol; build mines and farms around city 2; and connect cities with roads.

We need cottages but it can wait 10 turns. In fact i would like to see a game test that has us building and working more than 2 cottages during this period of time. I would rather have an academy with a 50% tech increase 10 turns earlier.

Damnrunner, why not state your case in the polls as well, people need to see this. I think this traditional cottage mentality is killing off different strategies to improve our position.

I am confident Writing will be good for us now, as we really need to get a leg up in the tech race, and writing is the only way to make use of that gold.
