Tales from the Ether (pre-NES)

Bah! Forgot something, as I always do...

Stories about inventions / invention progress would really be nice, as well. :D Even if you don't want people to know about it.

Does one of those propositions involve radio in some way?

Anyway, I think I could do it, with my team of Machinist/Inventor and Physicist/Engineer. I'll have to invent vacuum valves at some point...

It would take quite a bit of time to invent, but is possible. As you mentioned, vacuum tubes would be the more essential invention, from which radio would be possible. Or you could just say you want to invent radio, and I would include vacuum tubes (for radio specifically) as part of that.

Question - Is travel to the outer systems merely not advised, or impossible? And yes, I understand it would take (based on what you have given, I would say it takes 1/2 a season to go half an Asteronomical Unit, and a full season or more to go beyond that) 2 seasons to get to the Asteroid Belt from Mars, 4 seasons Mars to Jupiter, 8 seasons Mars to Saturn, 18 seasons Mars to Uranus and 29 seasons to go from Mars to Neptune.

Even if you pull GM rank, I'd still be interested in playing. And that information is free to use if you ever decide to open them up.

IIRC we can only get to the inner system and asteroids...though possibly in the future to jupiters moons.

Yeah, I just got to the FAQ. That's what I get for jumping the gun.

i think the problem is how could u possibly carry enough food to go even 8 seasons? theres no where to refuel out there and solar boilers wont work i think and a few other minor problems i think

I think eventually you could build a large enough vessel and a powerful enough solar boiler to get to jupiter but it will be a long time to go beyond that. Probably would need some new tech beyond solar boilers.

Welcome, Haseri! It would be great if you played. We need some more German players specifically, but I'd be happy if you played as whatever is open.

I am glad you found the FAQ. There it will mention that most solar boilers right now are not geared to go to the outer planets. However, Britain has two expeditions (one finished):
sending the science/exploration vessel HMS Intrepid...
and
sending the science/exploration vessel HMS Theseus (finished).

Theseus is fitted out with a Swiss Guildemarque lens in a new experimental gimbal mounting. This one had to turn back after 400 million miles.

The other one, the HMS Intrepid is rumored to have some sort of "atom drive". Anything beyond that is unknown to all players and the project is kept under extremely heavy secrecy. It's the kind of thing two engineers would talk about, "Hey did you hear about that atom drive Britain has developed? Really secret, ya know." "Oh, pish posh, that is just a rumor!" Players obtaining that technology is not possible now, nor will it be for several turns. I want to focus on what we have for now.

So I'm pulling GM on this one. :D But, at least I have backup to do so, and not just, "Me referee. Me say no!"

Well Haseri, it's nice to have you around and I hope you'll play!

Yeah, I have the Space 1889 book somewhere deep in the garage. I'll have to find it.

Making my character now.

Yep. I used a lot of reference in my Space 1889 book for this NES. I have the really old one. Not the newer one. But I do have all the expansions.

But our universe is much different from that one in many ways... it isn't a pure mirror or anything. But most of the setting is similar. A lot of the sub-scenarios I make up are not from Space 1889... but that's how my friends and I always played the RPG anyway.

haha any time i think about the venus in this universe it trips me out i'm like "but what about the acid rain and the thousands of pounds of air pressure"

Well, uh, you see [insert pseudo-science here].

Told ya so!

By the way - I want to mention that ships can communicate with each other and to planets using heliograph as well.

@Haseri: Looks great so far. Your party can have a mix of different nationalities, but the country you identify most is usually the nationality of your main character.

I have been really flexible on that whole thing, though, allowing players to not identify much with their home country. So you can continue down that road.

I even added this!

If you want a group of nationalities and you don't want to identify with any one nation, that is fine. If you want to be a group of pirates, that is fine. The possibilities are endless. Closely identifying with a nation is simply an easy way for a player to perform actions and go on expeditions, and that will also mean you may have some more resources at your disposal later on in the game. On that same note, loosely identifying/not identifying at all with a nation will mean that you can find some more creative methods to obtain the resources you might require for whatever endeavor you decide to pursue.

@Haseri: There isn't any problem on your team's nationalities. My team is British, but the main characters are Spanish, Italian, French and German, each of which reached the UK and the team through different means.

Indeed. Milarqui is sort of our golden child with experimental crews. A diverse bunch, none of them actually British, but still being funded/identifying with the British Empire for a variety of interesting reasons.

So as I said... I'm very flexible. Whatever makes it fun and free for everyone. That's my motto.
