Tech discovery voice overs

So, I'm an aspiring voice actor and I thought it would be a great project/practice effort to provide voice overs for all the tech discoveries in Fall from Heaven, the way that Leonard Nimoy does for CivIV. My plan is to record all the files and then offer them up as a pack to anyone who wants them.

I have two questions regarding this project:

1. Would people be interested in me actually doing this?
2. There are quotes in the FFH Civopedia for all the techs, basically. However, they're reasonably hefty - about twice the length of the base CivIV quotes. Would we be better off creating a set of bite-sized voice quotes for these techs and, perhaps, moving the full quotes to the Civopedia section.

Looking forward to your input!

EDIT: As promised, a sample! This is a quick read of the Agriculture quote (first on the list). I haven't quite figured out what to set the levels at. I haven't done anything to it save normalize it and remove some background noise.

This has been brought up before, but I don't think anyone has done it yet. It is hard to answer whether or not I would want you to do it without knowing what you sound like. Post a sample, would be my advice. As for the length, I don't think that is an issue with the right voice.

Good luck!

  1. Most definitely.
  2. I'm not so keen on rearranging the current written quotes, but I see no reason why your verbal quote would need to include the entirety of the longer ones. So, yes it makes sense to come up with shorter quotes for voice, but no it isn't also necessary to change/move the written text.

An interesting idea, but I'm wondering if it would sound right to have them all done by the same person, since some are quotes from dwarves, some humans, some elves, etc.

I was wondering about this, myself. For now, I think I'm going to go ahead and try to do them all. After all, Nimoy did all the quotes for the original in the same voice though they were quotes from different people. I mean, I'm hardly Nimoy, but let's start simple. We can get fancy later, I say.

1. Yes, this would be GREAT - I think Sid's Alpha Centauri is that immersive thanks to the tech quotes, so if a voice actor would do this, it would increase the atmosphere of FFH.
2. I think you should use the quotes, as they are now. Of course this means a bit more bytes to download and a bit more work for you - but I think for your training, this is the better way AND if anybody don't want to hear it, they just can click the quote away. In Alpha Centauri the quotes were quite long too. (btw, if you don't have Alpha Centauri yet, you should really get it, the voice acting there is one of the best)
@WarKirby
I don't think that matter's that much. Sure Alpha Centauri had about 6 different voice actors, but they got payed for it ;) and we're talking about *quotes*- if he is good in pronunciation or whatever this is called in english ;) , he should succeed in give a feeling for different races. I mean if I would quote Hyborem I wouldn't use my normal voice - I suppose.

oh yess! well if you know some film students with too much spare time, ask them if they could make some wonder movies for ffh in the way alpha centauri had them (especially weather paradigm). but start with voice acting ;), this really would be great.

It would be fantastic if there was a group of people volunteering to do full flavour readings ala Alpha Centauri, but in lieu of that something like this could be very good.

Remember the Sputnik quote? That has got to be a lot more absurd than anything FFH has in its list.

The Sputnik quote is my absolute favorite. It cracks me up every time! It's just so ridiculous and tongue in cheek.

I think, first pass, I'll want to record them all in the manner of a narrator quoting from many sources - ie. one voice. As I mentioned, I'm just starting out, and so getting all the practice I can is helpful! Also, while it puts more work on my table, it reduces the amount of coordination necessary.

From there, we can decide if we'd like to do different voices for the different quotes. I've already compiled a list of the techs organized by who provides the quotes. Amusingly, Alexis de Tocqueville provides the Trade quote. Good old Alexis really WAS quite the traveller!

Sounds like this will really add a lot. I'd love for this to happen.

Please do. Many audiobooks are ruined by people trying different voices. I'm supposing that they are not trained voice actors, so you've probably got an advantage over them anyway.

There's also Poe, translated to Latin (Way of the Wicked).

The bureaucracy is expanding to meet the needs of expanding bureaucracy.

:D

Anyway, I don't think there's anything wrong with doing the same voice for all the quotes since it can be considered as a person reading the quotes to the players, and not actually those who wrote the quotes reading it out to the players.

And I've put the sample in the first post! Bring on the critiques, heh. I'm just starting out and ego is the enemy of progress, so don't worry about hurting my feelings.

I'll put in the first comment, myself, which is that I cut myself off at the end of the last line in editing. D'oh! Still works as a sample, at least. :)

it could be interesting if all those voiceovers were spoken by important ffh people (( Kael, seZereth, MC, ... )) :D

edit:
sample agriculture -- really cool !!!
