Technologies help for those who like war

Well my axerush usually gives me another civs land, my next attack with catapults gives me 1-2 more AI's land (if all goes well). If i somehow managed to not get iron in any of my cities then... well you get the point :p (extremely unlikely)

And i don't use knights/crossbows a lot so i don't care that much about iron. (catapults beats everything :p )

And as i said, i trade iron working later from a friendly AI. I most likely wont build more than 3 cities in my games (AI expands like crazy) so where the iron is is pretty much irrelevant for me. (i don't have enough time to plan for a decent iron city)

But this is still a game where multiple strategies work so keep doing it if you feel it's worth it. For me i prefer getting CoL up soon so i can hit AI's hard as fast as possible and keep cities. The economy is my problem in the start, not the military.

Just a couple notes on how the military UU's come into play here

Sword have especially more synergy if you play korea. A stack of hwatchas and swords has no early weakness (hwatchas replace catapults and have the same +50% bonus to melee as axe)

Praetorians - Just being rome gives you a legitimate reason to place iron working way over bronze or construction. 8 strength! they only are really countered by a heavily promoted axe or macemen (you heard me).

Cossacks and redcoats are not as overpowered as they used to be, but are still formidible foes. As a middle game warmonger as russia or england, neglecting these is not the smartest thing to do - definitly worth a beeline to Military tradition for cossacks and Rifling for redcoats

I guess I typically play marathon games on huge boards si I often have to settle more than 3 cities.

Awesome. I really think I suffer from tech choosing inexperience. When the game begins I look at what resources are readily available and then research the corresponding techs then I go to BW. From there I head for CoL. After this I don't find that I have a consistent strategy because I seem to do look at the tech tree and think that I need this and that without a true purpose. I think that I want to get to Gun Powder all the way through to Combustion and when that is through I go all to Industrialism. Then I go for rocketry. By this in on Noble I seem to be in the middle of the pack.

Any suggestions from anyone?

Thank you all very much by the way.

You should really think on construction. Catapults are the hearth of the CivIV warfare ( cheap, colateral damage, retreat,....)
About gunpowder.... You should think Chemistry : Grens are much more powerful than muskets and are 1 tech away. Other options are MilTrad ( cavs ftw, atleast until BTS ) Rifling ( riflemen or his british encarnation) or steel ( cannons are a awesome unit)

Thanks rolo. I just hit a wall in my first noble game, so I just started a new game. This will give me the opportunity to clean up my strategy.
