Tell Firaxis what is making you nervous

Two things:
1. To beat a dead horse: having to sign up for anything in order to play the game
2. Hearing very little about the essense of "civilization" - the decision making in starting, building, maintaining and growing a civilization (e.g., the effects of improvements, wonders, trades, diplomacy, civics, culture, etc.). Too much has been focused on zoomed-in combat, which is irrelevent since it can be turned off or auto-resolved.

I really am worried about steam. Just the steamworks is making me unhappy, as I have heard of friends who have had problems with it.

Alright rebel, good points. But Macs last way longer than PCs. My old iMac G4 is 9 years old, and my Compaq XP is dead after two years of usage. It was never online, so no viruses. Also, my OS for mac, 10.6, cost me around $10. i check to price of Win 7, and the Home version is $150! But I guess thats because it was a big step up from Vista.

Most noncrappy computers will live longer than their usefull life ( I still have somewhere working cca 15 year old Pentium 1) but after 5+ years most computers are only good for internet or small server duty anyway. Thats why I always build my own PCs from quality components (+ high quality components often have 3-5 year waranty) - its still way cheaper than buying Mac. I agree that average Mac has higher quality than cheap OEM PC, but that is mostly because those OEM PCs are much cheaper so OEMs wont spend as much on components.

Look for Win 7 OEM licence

much better price :)

Thanks dude! I hope to get 7 on my Macbook soon. Then I'll be playing a ton of Civ V!

Sweet, Apple will be launching much better drivers in the near future, making the Mac Civ V even more accessible

I think it is moronic to complain about no mac support for CIV5.... 110% moronic.

Did the mac users suddenly forget about the lack of games that are developed for macs?
I am sure civ5 will come out for MACs in the future if the game is a hit. Its pretty silly to ask for support for an OS that 5 to 10% of the population uses and probably less then that for gamers...

Anyways... did I mention how lame I find macs? Paying that much for an machine is moronic. But hey I guess if you like "trouble" free computing like its 1998. I know I have tons of issues with my windows 7 machine. I mean it's crashed zero times, pretty crummy.

I dont get the hate for steam either.

The power concealed under the hood of OS X compared to Windows 7 is like comparing a BB gun to a .800 Nitro Express
600NE.jpg

mine is bigger than yours :p

It's Linux with a beautiful shell

Mac Pros are not toys, pretty much anything packing Xeons is designed for serious muscle

27" iMacs pack double the pixels/inch than 1080p, plus only a single cable on your desk is beauty

MacBook Pros are designed for people who need something powerful, durable, light weight and long battery life.

Mac Minis are designed for really small areas and make decent HTPCs, but not much else

and the MacBooks are acceptable but they are the worst things Apple makes, this is mostly because of the plastic case (though mine has taken enough abuse to make other laptops cry or die though my MacBook keeps on chugging), one redeeming feature is mine lasts six hours though Apple claims 4.5 .

I'm hoping Firaxis will drop all PPC support, if Civ V for Mac might suck (again)

I know that for most steamworks games, especially MP-focused games, auto-updating makes a lot of sense. It doesn't make quite so much sense for a primarily single player game like civilization.

Really? I almost never play Civ in single-player mode, except to brush up on strategy before a big multi-player game.

More important to me is that multi-player LAN mode will work with Steam in "offline" mode.

Actually, OS X is BSD with a pretty shell. BSD is fundamentally different than Linux. Though either way, it's a cleaner kernel than Windows.

Also, I'm assuming any Mac version of Civ 5 would be x86-only, seeing how Apple doesn't make PPC systems any more. The plus side of this should mean that it would limit the amount of additional effort required to make a Mac version.

My number one concern? That if I preorder the retail boxed version (the only internet connection available to my street is too slow to download the whole game), I'll be able to get the same "deluxe" content available to the Steam pre-orders.

And with the clock counting down to when pre-ordering isn't an option, I hope to get an answer sometime before then, heh.

Yes. It's fairly well accepted that most people who play civ4 or its expansions mainly play it in single player mode. It's not that hard to believe when you think about what the gameplay involves. Don't get me wrong - MP is great in civ4, but it's not where most people spend their time.

Actually there are some issues with civ4 MP that hold it back somewhat - OOS errors, hung vote screens, slow players, problems with movement lag in simultaneous turns sometimes causing you to lose a whole stack, etc.

So what exactly is the difference between "110% moronic" and "very, very dumb"?

I'm a lot more worried about the seemingly very small tech-tree, confirming that this is more a war game than a 4X game.
Can't care about Steam, it works great and in this day and age, it's the best (read: least obstructive, not most efficient) DRM solution there is. Just my opinion of course, but it sure as hell is better than the average EA or Ubi garbage.

I'm sure there are plenty of people out there who play it in SP mode, but it seems to get the most enjoyment out of a strategy game, you would want to play MP.

And yes, the OOS errors are annoying, and happen fairly frequently (every 30-60 minutes) in the later stages of the game. I actually haven't had any of the other issues, but the OOS is the biggest one. We really haven't heard a lot about MP in Civ 5, so I am interested in that as well, and what (if anything) they have done to fix the big MP issues in Civ 4.

In fact, I could label "multi-player support/issues" as my second biggest concern, given that the sole reason I've bought any Civ was for the MP aspect.

It seems to you. For an RTS game where a game is 20 minutes and there is limited single-player replay value, sure.
But for a game like Civ where games last hours, where roleplaying/immersion is a big factor and where the randomization of the game and maps means that each game can be quite different, multiplayer is often not appealing.

All the polls on Civ players suggest that the vast majority of civ players have a preference for single player, and at least half have never played any multiplayer ever.

BSD is Unix and OS X is Unix too (when running Leopard or higher on Intel it gains UNIX certification). BSD is designed for speed, stability and security. OS X largely stays true to its roots.

You would be surprised how many PPCs are still out there, they last quite a while.
