My system - ATI Radeon 9600XT, Intel P4 3.2 Ghz, 1GB Ram, 2x200GB SATA HDs.
I was having the problem where - after 1900 AD I was getting about 5 mins of play before <blink>, I was back at the desktop. This had gotten progressively worse as I progressed on a Standard size map and I was having to save every 5 mins. After recovering from my tantrum I tried a few things and performance was improved, along with no more crashes (Over 3 hours now, as opposed to every 5 mins).
Here's what I have got it down to so far, please let me know if this works for you:
Follow the instructions for the latest ATI drivers (if you did that to get it working, do not worry, you don't need to do it again).
Before loading the game, hit CTRL+ALT+DELETE and click 'Task Manager' followed by the 'Process' Tab.
Click the process named CLI.EXE and select 'End Process' (I had two instances of it running and killed them both). Then click the process ati2evxx.exe (Also two instances)
When I restarted the game, there was a noticeable performace increase (esp in combat) and it hasn't crashed yet. I hope this works for someone else out there!!
