You know what I'm talking about. People hear a word, latch onto it, then repeat it endlessly even where it doesn't apply.

So, which one grates on your nerves the most? I'll start off with a small one I see here constantly.

Straw Man - We ask for people to back up all sorts of things that they post here. Whether it's stats, quotes, or whatever else. If you think someone's argument is flawed, then point out the reasons why. No skilled debator would ever simply point at his opponent, yell "Straw Man!", and walk away as if he had made a valid point.

But the term "Straw Man" is regarded as a standard logical falacy in debating circles. If one points out why an argument is a straw man argument then it's perfectly valid.

If you feel that an argument made is not in fact a straw man argument, then you are welcome to retort and explain why it is not.

Well, what do you assert someone should do if they make a straw man arguement?

I'm tired of hearing the following phrase:
"Moderator Action: Perfection Banned XX Days/Weeks"

im sick of hearing "Im baaaaaaack"

Point out why. I see it being thrown at a lot of things where the logical fallacy is merely a difference of opinion. For anyone who agrees with the OP, there's no logical fallacy, and straw man means nothing to them.

Innocent Civilian

You are on one side or the other and therefore bias and not innocent.

You are a noncombatant maybe, but not innocent.

"Democracy isn't for everyone." I'm tired of people reciting this nonsense. By definition, democracy is for the people, so if you're a person, it's for you.

Edit: "Giant Death Robots", "Radioactive Monkeys"

Global warming: It's natural. Prove how all the other increases over the BILLIONS of years were caused by man and I'll concede that this one is too.

Godwin: Worst case examples are quite valid, so bring up Nazis all you want.

One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter: big freaking whoop...all that means is that the other man is a terrorist supporter.

The Constitution is a living document: Yes, in that it can be amended by specific actions. It's not supposed to be living as in "well, meanings evolve..." Crock of sugar honey iced tea.

'Freedom'. The word has been used by politicians so much in recent years, it has lost all meaning.

African American.

This term should not exist.

EDIT: And God Damnit, I'm talking only about the term, not the race.

Any hyphenated American term ... you are American PERIOD!

You are not <insert culture group here> -American.

Good God does other countries do this annoying habit.

"Black America", "Asian America", "white America", "hispanic America" -- and so on. I stand behind Teddy Roosevelt's statement -- "There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism."
