Terrain Texture Enhancement 2k

Question is if the effect of difference in the Texture Pack is too extreme or not?

Oh yeah, I remember noticing a difference between forests from different continents in vanilla now.

Anyway, I definitely like the more fleshed out approach. It was a little weird while getting used to it, but I just adore the visual diversity it creates. In fact, if making some of the more yellowish biomes look even less alike was possible without overdoing it, I'd be all for it. The current European rich green and African dark brown (I think?) stand out as the most unique, IMO.

I reworked some textures and in the mean time converted the mod to a DLC in order to achieve some things that I really wanted to have ingame.

So it turned out that there is much more possible by using a DLC mod, instead of using a simple mod.
I really wanted to have better textures for those Landmark Wonders and I was able to alter it finally.
Unfortunately I was not able to find out how to alter the silver ore, but I guess the result is OK...

Ah man, I'm usually resistant to teasers, but this one makes me feel uneasy in a good way.

Please please please let me know if you find a way to retexture (or even remodel!) forests and jungles.
Since I converted the mod to a DLC it is much easier to see texture changes ingame, because the game seems to block some changes if you try to apply them via a mod.

So yes it is possible to change the texture of forests and jungles, but there isn't any model of trees like it is in other 3D games like Skyrim where trees contain hundred thousand polygons.
The model for a forest is more like a simple stand-up display, like those in old movies, the game will fill these displays just with trees:

Unfortunately there are some textures that can be resized, but you will not notice any change, because the models are just as small that you could triple the resolution and won't see it.

Here is an example:
So let's play a little game. Open the first link below and look for two types of trees that are different.
I tripled the resolution from 256x256 to 1024x1024, but only replaced two trees of the texture with high resolution ones. The texture that is responsible for the forest tile, contains thirty trees, so find those two that has been altered:

OK, have you found them? No? Then let's have a look into the next picture, that will tell you the answer:
Try to find the trees first, before you reveal the answer!
Spoiler :
The answer is: The two pines!
I highlighted them in the next picture, by just changing the color of the two trees load the game and make a screenshot.

The change in resolutions is not very noticeable, is it? The same thing applies to city textures. I tripled the resolution, added some details, but ingame it will look almost the same.

Ah! That's what I did but I guess it doesn't work unless it's a DLC mod. Oh well - time to learn something new. Is there a reference explaining how to convert a mod to DLC?

EDIT: And thanks for the response. :) Means a lot!

So here we are. A new version inbound.

I reworked some textures like I wrote in the Changelog and also created new textures for Landmark Wonders. Furthermore I added textures for the city ground to have a better blending with the new terrain. Most importantly I converted the mod to a DLC, that allows me to implement texture changes that are not possible with a Mod. I added a BETA tag to the Mod, because I don't know how it will perform on your rigs. If someone has some feedback to the DLC, I really would like to hear his/her opinion. I followed the Guide to convert a Mod to a DLC first, but noticed that a lot of files went into the DLC that were not necessary in my opinion and that caused some 'Tags are not unique' messages. So I dropped the whole thing and did my own DLC file, by looking at the EUI DLC and by making some adjustments. Finally I hope you can enjoy the DLC, too.

Best regards,
Estebanium

Excited to try it. Thank you so much for breathing life into the visuals!

There is a guide for converting a mod into a DLC. However I had some database issues that are known and that should be harmless, but I decided to do my own DLC.

Excited to try it. Thank you so much for breathing life into the visuals!
Thank you :goodjob:. I guess I will play some games in the next time, before I continue the texture pack. Maybe there are other things that I can improve. Is the DLC working for you? Would be interested in some feedback, maybe I can remove the BETA tag then.

Wonderful mod and concept  , this is the first time I see a Blue-Marble-like mod in Civ5 (then again, I shouldn't have compared both wonderful mods alike)
Thank you, I really appreciate your comment.

I played a little bit with the water depth color. I tried to change the look to a more CIV VI like color.

Vanilla water:

Shifted only the color balance to a more blueish color:

Shifted the color balance like in the picture above, but also decreased brightness by 25%:

What do you think guys? Should one of those two be a part of the Terrain Texture Enhancement?

Last one looks real nice. I also see you are using SSAO now, looking good.

I must agree with the posters above. I really like the direction you're going with this, Estebanium.

I prefer the third one personally, though both a pretty good.
Yes at first I was favoring the second picture, but that changed over time
@Gazebo: Thank you for the hint :D

Until there is another thing I would like to mod, I am pretty fine with the result. I am pretty sure that if I start a game and play for some turns, I will find something that looks just.. nääääähh!

There are some things I would like to see, but that's out of my modding skill:
  • An ancient replacement for the Manufactory, because having a factory in the ancient era don't look really immersive
  • Grass on Grassland, like trees on a forest tile. In my opinion the visual difference is very minor in vanilla

Here is another screenshot of the water. I mean it will come to personal taste at a specific point, but it is really hard to decide which one should be choosen:

Maybe there are some milk-fans? I dropped my work on the watersky.dds because of that ^^

I personally like the previous iteration of water color (the third pic in your previous post). The last one is a bit too dark for other textures, it doesn't blend in as nicely. As you said, though, it's probably a matter of personal taste anyway.

Hello Estebanium!
Just gonna say that I love your mod and have wanted to do something like this for a LOOONG time! Never figured it out!
I know about DDS converters and DXT formats, but whenever I tried to do anything with 'em, they appeared as grey textures!
Do you plan on adding city textures to replace those weird, washed out textures or even more wonders? Thanks!

Edit: Just found your previous post about cities and trees. I'm a stuuuuuuuuuupid XD
