Twelve adults and five young people were arrested, authorities said.

"This group took steps to acquire three tons of ammonium nitrate and other components necessary to create explosive devices," said Royal Canadian Mounted Police Assistant Commissioner Mike McDonell in a statement.

The article also states that there was three times the amount of ammonium nitrate than what was used in the Oklahoma City Bombings.

What constitutes young people in Canada? Under 18 or 17? Either way the fact that five young people just ruined their lives is horrendous.

Under 18.

There was a big bust in Britain a few days ago as well.

It's nice to see the Mounties get their man, but its sad that young people are so easily persuaded into these kinds of things.

My former manager is a Muslim who is soon retiring and told me that he wants to dedicate his retirement to steering young boys away from extremism, so I'm still hopeful.

Either that or they ruin a lot more lives with three tons of ammonium nitrate...

Both are horrible, though some are worse than others. I would rather no one die and those kids not get into this sortof stuff. But if I had to choose one, I would go with these kids getting busted.

Looks like they forgot to inform us on their religion. Who wants to guess which one it is? :p

EDIT:
BBC said:
The suspects appeared to have "chosen a violent ideology inspired by al-Qaeda", said Luc Portelance, assistant director of operations for the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), Canada's spy agency.

According to a Canadian Press article:

http://cnews.canoe.ca/CNEWS/Canada/2006/06/03/1613034-cp.html

`Luc Portelance of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service said those arrested are Canadian residents from variety of backgrounds.`

If you feel like joining dots that may or may not be there, go right ahead. While I think the likelihood of (at least) one of them being Muslim is high, I'll wait until more info comes out.

What I want to know is why Winner finds it so important that this is pointed out.For someone who in another thread is trying say that racism in Europe is overblown, he's not helping his cause.

I expected that :p

I am just ironically reminding the fact, that most of today's terrorists are Muslims. Is that racist? No, it is the reality we're facing.

EDIT : the funniest thing is, that many times I heard that Muslim radicalism in Europe is caused by the discrimination and European xenophobia. I wonder why Canadian Muslims, supposedly living in idylic, multicultural society, decided to fight against the Western infidels...

You already know the answer to that sysyphus. Muslim, Sikh and Tamil Hindu criminal organizations, they're all present in the Toronto region with bad intentions on their minds. I don't care wich diety they worship, I'm just glad the RCMP and other agencies involved (CSIS, local law enforcement and of course, the CBSA!) were able to get them before they could do any harm.

By the way, CBC.ca just had a change of look. Check it out!

Don't anybody think I'm not happy that the Mounties arrested these guys. Me or my wife could have easily been among their victims even.

My point is that some people will use this to further malign Islam in general and create further tensions among communities. Certainly much terrorism is Islamic based, but that means building bridges rather than digging gaps.

This incident leaves most of us feeling sad, but some people wring their hands on news like this.

Just to be clear, when I wrote that you already knew the answer to your interrogation sysyphus, I was pointing at Winner's well-known prejudicial attitude towards Islam in general. I totally agree with you, wich is why I said that I don't care wich invisible being those arrested worship.

Question, do we know if they were planning an attack on Canada or the States? It's not that far to the US, won't take much planning to hop the border

Ah, gotcha! :)

@ Esckey, the targets were all in Toronto. I don't think that getting 3 tonnes of ammonium nitrate across the border is an easy task, NAFTA or no NAFTA!

It was supposed to occur in Ontario.

Something wicked comes this way...

It may not be the work of Islamic radicals, but it sure does have their fingerprints on it. Osama bin Laden did put Canada on a hitlist

I wonder if this has to do with Afiganstan?

You know, there is racism here; my Muslim friend has told me so. And the Millennium bomber came from Montreal, the problem with radical Islam is not unknown here.

'Ironically reminding the fact'?
Reading this post I was ironically reminded of the fact that terrorism in the USA is most often committed by White christians. Hhhmmm. Isn't that funny? I wonder why American Christians, supposedly living in 'idylic, multicultural society', decide to commit acts of terrorism.

Hey, its the reality we're facing.

I don't need to be prejudicial, the facts speak for themselves.

Yes, European bigotry towards Muslims is very apparent.

It's one of the reasons, for sure.

Canada's involvement in Afghanistan is fairly extensive.. especially considering how much we spend on our military compared to the U.S.
