TGOM03 - Celts in Space (C3C Demi-god)

Second that. I must say you hace acquitted yourself admirably.

Now that we know where the rubber is all we need to know is about aluminium and uranium and we are good to go.

lurker's comment: Gram you are doing great! Scout and Bede are truly putting you to the test and this is good. Listen to the gardener. ToE will open up the trading options big time. One question I have is whether you've started a Hoover's pre-build?
Thanks, Whomp! and good question...no I haven't, and that would be a good idea...probably in TJville. I get too narrowly focused when I'm not sure of what I'm doing. *sigh*

@gram, just remember when reading Whomp's comments is that he is the guy who took Fascism from the ToE.....

 Seems like I've heard that tale a time or two before. Sometimes we have to learn our lessons the hard way, but learn them well. :hmm:

I'm still needing some advice here before I finish turn 6.

I took another look at my save. We will lose gems from Carthage next turn and have no idea what it will take to renew. We are at ~25% WW. I experimented to find some way to get more gold. We currently have 150g. Here's what I found:

Lowering sci for 1 turn to 20% gives us enough to build a harbor in Nippur, but leaves us broke...didn't calc, but about 15g I think after rushing the harbor, and that won't cover much research.

a) Lower sci to 0% gives an add'l 167g for 317g total, Industrialism in 14 for 1 turn, then raise and rebalance specialists.

b) Change all but 1 specialist to taxmen and no growth anywhere gives an add'l 373g for 528g total, Industrialism in 47 for 1 turn, then a whole LOT more MMing to rebalance.

c) Abe will buy 1 lux from us for WM and 360g, but will slow invasion plans.

I guess I'd go with option (b) for 1 turn, giving enough gold to build the harbor and continue research. We'll have more unit support after we finish taking the south island, and railing high commerce tiles in our core should help too.

We really need that harbor so that our main continent has access to rubber and we will have our own source of horses. I just need the team's thoughts on this or some new ideas.

I'll be off on vacation from now through Jan 2 and able to play most of that time.

You can always disband some soon to be obsolete boats or units to lower the harbor cost to something affordable. Also, no real need to rush the harbor unless you think someone is going to come calling with Fire in the their Eyes.

OK, I'll need to completely rethink this then. We have 1 elite archer and ~5 LB's. I'm not sure when MDI's are considered obsolete...certainly not our MDI armies yet. Our 3 GS's are in an army. I believe the boats are mostly galleons and 2 frigates...no curraghs or galleys. I need them to ferry units and you may need them to finish off the 2 Hittite small island cities which I am unlikely to get done during my turns (if you choose to do that).

Our deal for horses runs out in 5 turns, so I guess I could start cavs that would finish after the trade expires, but before the harbor completes.

We were researching 40% at ~-65gpt, so 150g would last 2 turns...maybe less if Hannibal wants to increase the cost of the gem trade next turn. Abe will give us 1 lux for 2 of ours plus WM and a few gold, but do we want to make him that happy???

I could stop some towns from further growth and hire a few more taxmen. Our 3 settlers on the south island will increase our unit support a bit and I'll keep the last Bab town if it doesn't implode.

You'll be up next, and I know you're very busy with the holiday rush, so I hope you won't mind if I wait until tomorrow to go at this again.

I finally came up with something I think worked. I haven't been to sleep for over 30 hours, so I hope, hope, hope it's alright and makes sense. Continued from the middle of turn 6:

Change to Military Academy at TJville as Hoover pre-build.

Unload cannon and vet lb from galleon in port, and reload with reg 3/3 lb's from HereWeGo, Bede's Abbey and The Rathaus, sailing directly into Nippur to unload and disband next turn.

Slowed growth and made taxmen in multiple towns to get to -12g without lowering the research rate.

IT Hittites and Japan make peace. We lose our supply of gems.

7. 1120ad - Move troops toward Hubishna. Found Eboracum east of Nippur -> temple. Move settler near horses. Disband reg lb's in Nippur to get harbor in 3.

Gems are no longer available from Carthage. Unhappiness at Tolosa, InYourFace, ForwardPost, BugsRest and Last Resort...hire specialists as needed. Found Gulf Town S/E of Axima -> musket. Worker moves. Indust due in 4 at +9g with 138 in the kitty.

IT - Hittite caravel sails toward mainland. Resistance ends in Kadesh. Last Resort market -> uni.

8. 1130ad - Middletown founded east of Kadesh -> temple. Troops move to gates of Hubishna and will attack next turn. worker moves.

Trade silks to Japan for WM and 56g (all they have). Trade SciMeth to Joanie for Sanitation.

IT - Hittite caravel attacks our galleon and we sink it unscathed. Rutupaie settler -> arty, Richborough market -> uni, SaltPoach uni -> court, Gold Hill worker -> musket. French start TofE.

9. 1140ad - Bombard Hubishna, rl 1 rifle and take 1 hp from other, attack with army and Hubishna is ours with 1 resistor and 2 slaves. Found Rubber City north of Hubishna -> worker. Send units west toward Hittite towns. more railing

IT - Hittites want peace...I think not. Ugarit temple -> harbor, OneMoreTon settler -> arty, Scoutsrest arty -> lib, Nippur harbor -> rax, Mistburg lib -> market, Glanum aqua - arty. We get a 2nd story on our Palace wing.

10. 1150ad - railing and worker moves.

I didn't want to continue moving our units toward the 2 Hittite cities on the southern island. All the cannons are at least 2 moves away, an army healing in Hubishna and other units at various stages of either on their way or protecting the other towns. I didn't want to make the decision for the next player how to place the troops.

Rubber can be hooked up if we get more workers from the mainland or organize the ones already there. There is now a harbor in Nippur and we have our own supply of horses.

Industrialization is due next turn at +257gpt with 227g in the kitty.

I think the MMing is fairly good and the scientists should be right on, but ya might wanna double check. I had turned some citizens into taxmen a few turns ago, but several have been put back to work. I think all but a couple of towns in old Incaland are connected by rails, and of course the south island towns. There is a settler with movement left in Onemoreton.

Looking good. You fought your way through the really nasty part of the Demigod game. Tech costs are beginning to spiral, though that will work to our advantage in another four turns, and the resources get stretched thin. Not to mention the need to fight two (or was it three opponents?) with a technology advantage. But done good so far.

Okay, gotta ask, but don't answer 'till you have some sleep, was the deal for Sanitation for trade bait, to give the other buy a boost, or "BecauseYouCould"?

This is starting to look better, nice job Harriet!

@Bede: See if it makes sense to swap TJ'ville to a Factory when Industrialization comes in.

Oh I hope Abe does not have Flight already. A wooden navy against bombers at this level is frightening. Build me some boats, Brother Bede! We may find it difficult to land follow-on forces - the initial landing must be able to strike hard! Ideally, I would like to have two landing parties: An infantry Army (may not be possible if we don't pop a leader soon) with 4 Explorers, and a second task force to sack Baltimore.

I will be travelling Saturday, and unable to play again until Monday or Tuesday evening.

@Team: Sorry for the double post...

@Bede: Abe's rubber supply is located at Izumo. If you can scrape together a minimum of a Galleon, 2 Infantry, and 2 Explorers on our eastern coast, I can bring the pain.

As I recall (seems like ages ago), Abe and Hannibal already had it, so it was no longer a monopoly, many of our cities are at pop 12 (we may want to grow), and to prevent Joanie from getting too far behind Abe and being taken over by him. Of course I gulped when Joanie started on ToE, so maybe those were not good enough reasons. Seems like Abe has started ToE also, though I don't see that in a quick skim of my log. Sorry if it was a bad decision, but it wasn't totally "because I could"...made sense to me at the time.

Our cities are packed a bit tight for hospitals... but if we should capture 5 cities with hospitals in 'em we can still build Battlefield Medicine. :borg:

Of course... there's only one American city I want to keep... the one with Smith's Trading Co. Any other American territory needs to be claimed with combat settlers... to claim luxuries and hire specialists...

Oh how I love a good industrial era, combined arms slugfest... :ar15:

Of course this will be all over when my next turnset comes around....right??? :p

I just checked the save and Abe is NOT building ToE. Guess that's why I didn't log it, huh? I must have been hallucinating.

And espionage!

Merry Christmas all!!

Odds are if Abe is still at war with a continental neighbor he is probably mobilised, so no Wonders for him.

Will play this on Xmas Day.

Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!

Awww... Po widdle Abe... all those wonders... and nothing but a lump of coal and a slugfest in his stocking.
Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!
And a good night to you too, Brother Bede. I hope you haven't lost too much sleep this holiday season. As for me, this is shaping up to be an awesome Christmas. So far I have received:

Some really good coffee, from some I.T. types I helped out the other night. :coffee:
A nice mix of Babylonian and Hittite Rockpiles, compliments of General Mayhem. :salute:
Some Saltpeter and some Rubber, compliments of our resident Emperess-in-training. (Formerly known as a Fretful Ancient Crone) :queen:
This game, compliments of a Grumpy Ol' Monk. :hatsoff:

So here's my basic holiday greeting:

Chestnut Roasting on an open mushroom cloud :nuke: ... nope...that wasn't what I wanted to say...
Happy Hammering... :hammer: ...no... that wasn't it...
Merry D-Day to all! And to all a good... :hmm: ...doesn't quite sing...
Peace on Earth, Good Will towards... Raging Barbarians... :ninja:

...nope. That's not it either...

Oh well. I'll think of somethin'. (I usually do.) Until then, here's a Christmas smiley for you all. (Lurkers too...) :xmas:
