TGOM03 - Celts in Space (C3C Demi-god)

Once again, sorry for the double-post...but something in this reminded me of something I forgot to mention.
Bede said:
If we plan on scientist farming our way to space we can go easy on the libraries and universities unless the town is real commerce powerhouse.
@Bede: When you next get the save, you're going to see something that'll make you think I've gone daft (again). I started a Factory build in Bede's Abbey (a very shield-poor city). I put the Factory there for one main reason - to build a commercial dock faster.

While it could be a pretty powerful city with an offshore platform, I wouldn't blame you for selling off the Factory once the Commercial Dock is finished. Just build the dock there first, as that town is working about 8 or 9 coastal tiles...a dock there made sense to me. Of course... a Stock Exchange might also make sense there... :mischief:

I wonder if a WWII conquests SG might be a fun way to work on some of this industrial-era combat stuff.

Can I third that?

@gmaharriet: In case you're still wondering about airlifting, Whomp got it right. Put an airfield on a railed tile, and move a unit. You'll see an "airlift" button appear. Hit that, and you can move that unit to any other airfield.

I think I understand now. I'll do that. Will be playing again shortly.

I wonder if a WWII conquests SG might be a fun way to work on some of this industrial-era combat stuff... :hmm: :mischief:

Are you talking about another "it's not really a training game" for me to be confused all the time???

You'd have to be a Jimmy Buffet fan to truly understand this next bit...but here goes...it's kinda like "Grapefruit, Juicy-Fruit"...

...as in...

That's the plan, baby! What we don't drink, we're gonna pour on ya!

Short interim report: End of turn 6 and Seattle and Atlanta are Rock Pile City ads. Gonna take a break and think about which way to go next and how to handle a much wider front.

That's the plan, baby! What we don't drink, we're gonna pour on ya!
I've never played any of the scenarios, but have looked at a couple. It always looks like walking into the middle of an SG with no idea what's happened prior.

I'll look forward to bathing in fruit juice! :p

@Bede - I'm about to continue the campaign. How many combat settlers are you likely to need? We have 3 waiting in the wings now, and I can get as many as 7 more for a waste of between 2 to 10 shields...mostly from arty builds that won't complete for 40 to 50 turns. Do you have a wish list? :)

Edit: OK, I'll go ahead. I saw you online when I posted this and thought you might see it. I'll just go for what "feels" right. :mischief:

Turnlog from where I left off:

Turn 4 cont'd:
Build airfield at Auda City and move units toward Seattle. Build airfields and airlift infantry to America. Since the arty can bombard Seattle from our own territory, I'll leave them on the airfield with the 3 infantry for protection and attack Seattle with the rest of the units.

Battle for Seattle: Arty gets 5 hits out of 11. Vet cav dies, but rl's infantry. elite cav kills infantry and retreats, vet cav dies but rl defender showing, vet cav kills infantry, elite cav takes Seattle, but no leader. Raze Seattle, netting 20g, 1 arty and 5 slaves. All returned to stack and fortified except wounded elite cav returned to our territory for healing.

IT - Americans destroy the Japanese. Carthage infantry leave our territory. Richborough arty -> arty, AudaCity rax -> walls, Lurkersville infantry -> bomber. Americans start Universal Suffrage. pollution at Scoutsrest mountain (argh!).

5. 1325ad - All units moved back onto our airfield, wounded elite cav sent to rax to heal. Moving ships, cleaning pollution and railing.

IT - GOC bomber -> bomber, Vilcas aqua -> settler, Harrietsburg cav -> bomber, more pollution.

6. 1330ad - Our first bomber is sent to Auda City airfield, protected by 3 infantry. The rest of the stack is moved toward Atlanta. Our 2nd boatloads of units have just arrived at Auda City, but no movement.

Battle for Atlanta: Arty rl all of the 3 defending infantry. Vet cav kills 1, but loses 2 hp, vet cav kills another, but is rl'd, Elite cav kills the last defender and Atlanta is razed, netting 20g, 1 arty and 5 slaves. All are returned to the stack and fortified except our 2 wounded cavs who are returned to our territory.

Skim combat settlers from Agedincum for loss of 4 shields, SwampTown 4 shields and swap build in Gold Hill for settler in 3.

IT - Carthage and France sign peace. Joanie declines to renew our trading incense to her for 13gpt, but offers 10gpt, and then declines renewal of dyes for 10gpt, but will take it for 6gpt, and we accept both changes. Joanie is polite at bats her eyelashes at Brennus. ;) We complete the Military Academy in TJville -> army in 8, SwampTown settler -> arty, Nemausus bomber -> bomber, Richborough arty -> arty, Mayhemium factory -> flak, Bugsrest factory -> flak, Salt Poach factory -> bomber, Last Resort bomber -> bomber, Deva lib -> arty, Jungle West aqua -> flak, Agedincum settler -> arty.

7. 1335ad - Rebase bombers in AudaCity. Entremont is unhappy so hire taxman. Move 2 injured cavs to AudaCity and other units toward Denver. Send The General's Revenge and pillage Abe's horses. Our single bomber made a run on Denver and failed. Load 3 settlers and 1 cav on galleon and send with empty transport toward America. Worker moves. I'm beginning to feel sorry for those 2 lost Carthaginian infantry who have a very long ways to home through enemy territory.

Mass Production next turn and MM to +67gpt.

IT - Mass Prod in -> Motorized Transportation in 5. GOC bomber -> Heroic Epic in 4 (we could use some leaders for armies), Scoutsrest bank -> bomber, Camulodenum cruiser -> bomber, Exrockpile harbor -> court, WestFlank aqua -> flak, Noviomagus court -> market

8. 1340ad - MM to Motor Transp in 4.

Battle for Denver: Our 3 bombers get only 1 hit in Denver. Arty rl's defenders. Our guerillas cannot get close enough. Vet cav dies against rl'd infantry, vet cav kills infantry but is rl'd, vet cav kills infantry losing 1hp and promoted to elite, elite cav kills infantry but is rl'd, elite cav kills last infantry flawlessly but no promotion, Denver is razed netting 20g and 5 slaves, and Abe has lost his supply of ivory.

Send injured cavs back to AudaCity to heal and fortify others to protect arty and workers. The General's revenge heads off to pillage some oil next turn.

We now have a spy planted in Washington. A check of F3 shows 11 workers, 2 rifles, 23 cavs, 106 infantry, 6 arty, 27 frigates, 2 galleons, 4 transports and 4 guerillas. I'm kinda glad I didn't know this earlier. I rushed walls in AudaCity, thinking we've been very lucky so far.

IT - 2 infantry suicide against our guerillas and 2 guerillas show up just north of Audacity. Incense Desert aqua -> arty, Richborough arty -> arty, AudaCity walls -> lib, Shuruppak harbor -> arty, Lurkersville bomber -> bomber, LoveShack court -> market, Tolosa factory -> flak, Glanum temple -> flak, GrapeVine aqua -> harbor, Gold Hill settler -> arty

9. 1345ad - Dial up Hannibal and trade him silks for 8gpt.

Bombard and hit both of the guerillas outside AudaCity, then kill both with bombers. The General's Revenge pillages Abe's only "connected" source of oil...he has 2 or 3 others and a couple of rubber, but none connected.

I decided we needed more cavs to make up for the ones lost in previous battles and airlift 3 over, but also build 2 more airfields in Auda City just in case we need to get them home for defense in a hurry. Head all units toward Buffalo.

The galleon of settlers sails into AudaCity. Lots of worker moves.

IT - One American infantry shows up on our salt in AudaCity. Ugarit arty -> flak, Nemausus bomber -> bomber, Harrietsburg bomber -> bomber, Last Resort bomber -> bomber.

10. 1350ad - Bombard the American infantry with arty and kill with a bomber. Bombing runs on Buffalo, 1 missed, harbor is destroyed, next failed, next killed pop. Most of our units were moved just outside Buffalo in single stack and could bombard next turn.

After turn notes:

The General's Revenge is sitting on a mountain just south of New York ready to pillage the salt next turn. There are 3 settlers in Auda City and 3 more near Hattusha on our mainland and could be transported. We now have 8 bombers on the airfield at Auda City with more building soon. There are lots of workers sitting in Auda City that I haven't done much with since they'd need to be protected.

The MMing should be right on for for Motorized Transport in 2. We have trades that will end next turn with both Hannibal and Joanie. We have +75gpt and 362g in the kitty. Hannibal will trade 690g, 40gpt and WM for Steel, but I'll leave that decision up to the next player.

Here's the save. Pics to follow. :)

@gmaharriet: Nicely fought! I was hoping you would sack Seattle and Atlanta on your turns; you also razed Denver and exceeded my expectations! :goodjob:

With tanks coming on soon, and pre-positioned combat settlers for the good monk to put to good use... I will probably get to do something I haven't had to do yet in this game: mop-up duty. :( :p

I sure wouldn't take bets against your coming up with an interesting "idea" for something more exciting than mop-up. :mischief:

 gmah! Way to put the screws to Abe. I think if we check we will find that Abe isn't building Universal Suffrage anymore. When the war ended with Japan he de-mobbed for a turn but I just have to bet after you got finished with him, then he re-mobbed. That's both good and bad, as while he is mobilized his culture growth is cut in half, but his production in his core cities is really high.

I may consider mobilizing the Celts if it will get tanks and airplanes to the front any quicker.

Too bad for Toku. Despite his one mistake he was a pretty good ally until Hannibal took up the slack.

@Bede: Take a careful look at the state of our infrastructure before pulling the trigger on mobilization. IIRC, we don't have a single stock exchange yet...and we've probably got some core cities that could use a bank or university...

Besides, with the pillaging that harriett did, Abe won't be able to build anything more dangerous than a guerilla. I think we can whoop up on him without mobilizing....

I'm back, and can be slotted in where Bede wants me. Good to see we're still alive, looks like you all have been busy...

Welcome back, General M! I hope you had a nice holiday. :)

Nothing like being an AGRI Republic in a demigod game. I guess Jefferson was right. All the factors are falling into place.....happiness (fireworks all over the place), science (1200 beakers a turn at no strain), military (haven't hit the unit suport limit yet) and so on and so forth.....And gmaH has an army of Gallic swords out there wrecking the Amurrican economy,

Looks like Abe is going to be reduced to fighting us off with plowshares instead of swords soon.

Good thing we are now the techno queens, as the demise of Japan queered our trading abilities.

The citizens of Entremont are chronically unhappy and I finally realize that the size 12 town lacks a market place.....

Abe's only attempts at a counter attack netted him a tank outside New Orleans and promoted a guerilla in the hills around Washington. I ignored the infantry pillagers caause all they could do was cut off the saltpeter which we aren't needing anyway.

Forces are postioned to turn Washington into rubble on the next turn (I did not set it up so scout could do on the IT. :D)

The news at six:

The only other item of note is that I mucked up a trading round with Joan and didn't get everything I wanted (the Japanese thing is hanging over our heads and I was a little too hasty in opening the peace negotiations)

Time for a commercial break. Don't touch that dial!

@General Mayhem: Glad to see you're back. I believe Bede is playing now, which means that you timed your return just right to get your regular slot back in the rotation.

In looking at the 'preview' to this, I see that I am cross-posting with Bede...

Edit: I see that the wonder-sacking part of the slugfest has begun! :hammer:

This just in: San Francisco burns

So i relieve him of it for Combustion then sucker him back in to the war. He just wanted the invitation to the burning.

Moved the airfield forward as the settlers built towns in the old Amurrican lands. Tanks are on the mountains within striking distance of Washington, with supporting artillery; Bombers are on mountain airfield garrisoned by MechInf. (Learned computers and started Rockets. It was the age old choice: pitchblende or bauxite, pitchblende or bauxite and I plumped for bauxite as we can build Modern Armor with those).

So, since the scout has set this up, it's only fair he get the desruction of Washington, then it's on to the General (gmaH, you get a rest)

Roster:
scout - up
General - get the mops and brooms out for sweeping up the remnants.
gmaH - taking a long nap after her marathons and exceeding the mentor's expectations.
Bede - teed up Washington.

Very well then, it's on to Alpha C. by way of Washington! "Got it." :salute:
