The 19th Century Europe Mod

Perhaps Aristocracy would fit as a replacement, however if the Pedia entry for Romanticism explains that it is distinctly anti-enlightenment it would clear up whatever problems may arrise from early socialist romanticism (which I in my readings have never come across, then again I've only read Marx and post Marx material)

There weren't many. Some lable Robert Owen and the French early socialists (Fourier, Saint-Simon) in the context of the Romantic movement. Some of their rhetoric did indeed seem so. But remember, their culture was by nature Romantic (redundant  ?), and those early-socialist intellectuals, like all intellectuals, were a products of their time.

Needless to say, Romanticism has never come up as an issue in any of my history of economic thought lectures or materials, so its importance for socialist thought, in my mind and thought, is very small. Remember, Marx is Hegel ("twisted on his head") and, as such, looks at history moving forward and historical progress (not history moving backward -- Romanticism). Thus, Romanticism is, in my opinion, incompatable with socialism, at least the socialism that dominated the 19th century (those early socialists were all dead before this mod even starts). I like the term "Romanticism" as the civic name...

I agree. I know there can be "Romantic" ideals for nearly any belief system. But there WAS an actual ideological system known as "Romanticism", which was essentially anti-modernist. They wanted to roll back times to when religion had a stronger influence, when art actually looked like real world things, when peoples' lives weren't complicated by industry. It's pretty multidimensional, like many systems of belief, and no two romantics shared the same ideas -- just an overall sense that the world USED to be pretty good.

In that sense, Romanticism is definitely incompatible with the Socialist movement.

Thanks for the explanation. I agree with Lief that the pedia entry will clear it up. The term "aristocracy" doesn't bring to mind the other cultural aspects associated with romanticism of the period. And besides, the "romanticism" title is one of those tid bits that makes this mod destinctly 19th century.

I think my own take is shaped by my contemporary persepective and leanings. I'm a germanphile and heady on contemporary post- and "neo" Marxist thought and writers, that are increasingly become more "romantic"- in a different sense than a strict 19th century definition.

The thought put here is precisely why, IMO, the Khmer Rogues weren't at all communist or socialist, they wanted to push society back to the good old feutal barbarism state like the good old days thousands of years ago. But that's neither here nor there.

(Now I've got 'Holiday in Cambodia' stuck in my head)

I'm a little confused by having a specific Proletarian Dictatorship civic. I mean I get what you're going for, but it's also not something that really occured (except in the Commune, but that would be shown as anarchy in civ-terms anyway, right?) I do agree that there should be some differentiation between more "mild" dictatorships and heavier ones. Authoritarian and Totalitarian would suffice, I suppose. Also, the word is "Junta" not "Juanta"

Other than that, I think this is really great, replacing religion with ideology is great for the 19th cent, and I've been thinking of how to do this myself. Isn't it possible to eventually get all ideologies in some cities though?

I posted this in the Unit requests thread, but I'll post it here too so everyone interested can see what's up. These are the new units needed for this mod. Most are just mix & match with existing models... I can't do it, so any help is greatly appreciated.

Early-to-Mid 19th centrury
- Napoleonic Lancers (civ-colored redcoat on horse with lance)

Mit-to-Late 19th Century (e.g. Franco-Prussian war-era)
- Later-19th century guards/heavy infantry (dunno... could be a reskinned rifleman w/ later-era hat (maybe a German Pickelhaube?))
- Later-19th century Hussars (cavalry unit with sword and cannon-guy’s head?)
- Later-19th century Cuirassiers (Cossack unit with sword and rifleman head?)
- Later-19th century combat engineers (rifleman with shovel and dynamite?)
- Later-19th century artillery (Cannon with rifleman artillerist)

WWI-era
- WWI-era generic infantry (could just be Machine Gunner w/ a rifle)
- WWI-era generic heavy cavalry (again, just Machine Gunner on a horse w/ a rifle)
- WWI-era generic light cavalry (MG on horse w/ pistol)
- WWI-era generic combat engineers (Machine Gunner w/ shovel & dynamite?... for entrenchment bonuses)
- WWI-era generic gas infantry/storm trooper (Machine Gunner w/ rifle and WWI-style gasmask)

Any help is greatly appreciated :goodjob:

Three posts in a row... yes!!!

Below you'll find a chart of the upgrade paths for the units. Some units are missing and the most names are placeholders. Any suggestions are welcome :) Note: This is all very, very tenative... it's mostly just a brainstorm.

These are the types of units (units representing these types differ between eras):

Infantry Types
Regular Infantry: Standard troops.
Heavy Infantry: Bonus attacking. Costly.
Engineer: Various defensive bonuses. Bonus attacking cities. Costly.
Machine Gunner: Only defense. Strong defense.

Cavalry Types
Heavy Cav: Slower than other cav, but stronger.
Medium Cav: Medium cavalry.
Light Cav: Fast for mopping up & raiding.

Artillery
Artillery: Collateral damage & city defense bombardment.

Tank
Tank: Strong. Cuts through Engineers & Machine Gunners. Costly.

Airplane
Bi-Plane: Recon. Weak attack.

Bright day
Gun toting cavalry is old (Reiters maybe?). I know for sure of such formations in 30 years war. Single guns or artilery and howitzers? Will think on it...

Check the WW1 scenario for units, it should have some.

I finally found where they are located. They're not in the mods folder, but in with the original units folder . Anyway, here's what the units are looking like now. The WWI unit graphics/models are from Firaxis, of course, and AlazkanAssassin's Napoleonic collection was able to fill in some gaps. All credit goes to them.

Here's screenshots of the units, and upgrade paths for infantry and artillery. Cavalry units won't upgrade (AFAIK, not much new in the cavalry area during this time). I'll update them when things change and with strength, special bonus info, cost, etc, later.

Still Needed: As you can see, a new skin/model is needed to differentiate the early and mid artillery. Also, the Shock Troops need some differentiation - I think a gas mask and bayonet would look good. If anyone can do these units and would like to help, please let me know :goodjob:

Four posts in a row... I feel like I'm talking to myself.

Anyway, I finished the tech tree. It took forever. Anybody that's interested can take a look at the low-quality (due to upload reqs) screenshot on the first page. I used many of the old Civ 3 icons from Rufus T. Firefly, Yoda Power, and Firaxis. Made some new ones too (who'd have thought John Stuart Mill or Leon Walras would have shown up as material in a computer game :crazyeye: ).

Let me know what you think. I may have gotten carried away, since there are 92 techs, but I also may have missed something important. I'm also still taking any comments, suggestions, complains, and concerns from any interested parties.

Here's the list of techs.
