The American Pie Popup Ad

I would like to express my disdain for the annoying American Pie Popup ads on this site. They've got sound, motion, and are generally a pain in the ass. Are they really necessary?

Took the words right out of my mouth. But besides the domain name what else does civfanatics have to pay for. They are hosted by strategy gaming.com .

But its hard for webmasters these days, I'm hardly making enough to upkeep my two domains each year so I understand the reason for this.

But I stil can't understand why Crosswinds has to have big ugly pop-ups instead of stall nice ones like geocities.

also.. this fourm.. (Ultimate Bulletin Board Version 5.47b ) actually costs money to buy and run too?

and it's a rather popular place.. it get's a lot of traffic too

its' not that bad though.. compaird to other places i've been hehe..

I only take half a second to close it down so i couldn't care less about it. But i did watch it the first time it popped up.

I have yet to watch it, and if it continues to po-up I will think very carefully about coming back. The ad would probably only run for a few days, so I'd try again after that amount of time. Pop-up ads are annoying and I don't feel it is worth my time to moderate for free and be bothered by damn ads. If possible Thunderfall, please get rid of it.

I haven't read the Site Feedback discussion yet, but I say at least let the ad originator know that it is only annoying people and driving them away. I hate it and would dearly like to see it go away. I surf this site at work, and there are times when the sudden unexpected music coming from my PC might be inappropriate

He popped up when i was busy icqing and didn't realise that i loaded up civfanatics...I couldn't get any mp3s to work just his ****ing voice.

You can use 3rd party software to filter the HTML stream and remove most undesirable stuff before your browser even sees it, much less processes it.

Personally, I've used AtGuard for almost 2 years. Works great, no more ads. Sometimes, there is a "blank spot" where an ad should be... but no ill effects.

BTW, it is funny that I have to actually go to "extra" trouble and disable certain software, like AtGurad, in order to see what others are talking about with annoying ads. Others have to go to extra trouble to get rid of the ads. I didn't even know about those pop-ups, LOL... have they been on CFC for long?

I'm like you, starlifter, I don't even know what eeeveryone is talking about. Only difference is when I the first pop-up here blared at me I immediately went to the "gaaaaaaah a pop-up" thread and and got information on the pop-up stopper which I immediately downloaded. So I am afraid I have "missed out" on all the pop-up ads.

I'll be in once or twice a month to download/submit my GOTM, but no more forums for me. This is crap.
