The Baltic Republic (independent Kaliningrad Oblast)

/subscription post

Listening to all of that shall take a while.

Hey, since Generalissimo Putino loves democracy he'll definitely support the locals petitioning to secede from Russia just like he supports Crimea seceding from Ukraine.

:mischief:

Erm, why are the comments sections, like, full of... very dubious people?
And why is the interviewer - apparently - a 16 year old German kid who speaks complete poop for English?
And why is the guy telling the interviewer that they also give interviews to the freakin Ostpreußenblatt?
Jesus bleeping Christ!

My radar is going to Nazicon 1 here...

Not that that would necessarily detract anything from the seperatists' case, but if they don't know with whom they're probably in bed there somebody should tell them.

This is part of old Baltic Prussia, then Teutonic Order, then Ducal Prussia (vassal of Poland), then Kingdom of Prussia, etc.

Historically Prussian (Baltic), German, Polish and Lithuanian (Baltic) languages were spoken there. Since 1945 also Russian language.

I see no "Nazi traditions" in this. German Nazis contributed to destruction of East Prussian traditions, not to creating them.

So, Respublika Borussija, here we come.

You know, it'd be funny if the people at Kaliningrad just look at their geopolitical situation, and see that they, if they wanted to, could separate from Russia and join the EU and become a wealthy Baltic Republic, then actively pursued it.

They could even revive the Old Prussian language, it's been extinct for less time than Hebrew was.

That's not what i said.

If they're legit, they really don't want to have anything to do with the Ostpreußenblatt (it's not their friend, not really).
Maybe they don't know that. Hence my reccomendation to tell them.

So call themselves the Hanseatic League, then (even though they don't have pubeck and hamburg and all that)? :D

The other name I'd like to see if they become independent is the Teutonic Order.

The name "Teutonic Order" is already taken :) - its current Grand Master is Bruno Platter (and the Order has 1200 members):

Video with speech of the Grand Master of the Teutonic Order, Bruno Platter (in German + Polish translation):

Link to video.

But they can invite Bruno Platter to become their President. Current headquarters of the Teutonic Order is in Vienna.

PS: of course they are no longer an Order of warlike Knights, they are just an Order of peaceful Monks today. ;)

Watching the first video a bit right now.

The problem with Kaliningrad is that the GDP and quality of life is too high relatively to have any protests/independence movements of significance of note. But theoretically, if somehow they declared their independence today would the Baltic states offer military access to Russia to defend their interests? I am not sure of what laws exist, but I am sure they have some treaty with Russia that allows for a certain amount of troops to travel through to reach the enclave.

You know, maybe the West should make a trade - Russia gets Crimea, and the friendly revolutionaries next doors to Poland go to their legitimate co- err, I meant they'll get an independent government.

Also, all Baltic Republics are, well, Baltic Republics. That'd be one dumb name.

South Sudan calls itself South Sudan. Even though it had a bunch of cooler names to choose from.

Uncreative names are not entirely unprecedented.
