The Best and Worst leader of your nation's history...

worst: George W. Bush(looka t what he did to the economy!)
best: George Washington holds a place in my heart(built this great nation)

Canada

Best- Pierre Elliot Trudeau. He was CANADIAN. He never sold out, and despite some wasteful spending, he was a fantastic Prime Minister. There is some reason why he was elected for 4 terms. Probably one of the most charismatic leaders of any nation ever.

Worst- Brian Mulruny. Sold us out to the NAFTA anal rape package. Was a completely lacky of Bush I, and then sued the government some years later for millions for a scandal he was involved in!

2. So? I'm not against democracy if I'm against the murder of millions of innocent babies.

The "sex scandal" is insignificant, I will not bother talking about it.

Tell me; do you eat meat that comes from butcher shops? The animals there are hammered, decapitated, and slaughtered. Fetuses "murdered" in abortions aren't. The pictures you see on picket signs of pro-lifists of late-term abortions are supposed to be private information. Do you approve of them stealing images from women with aborted fetii? What if you were a teenage girl who made the wrong decision, and got pregnant. The girls life would be ruined because she would have to raise her child, if it weren't for abortions. What if some poor lady was raped? She would have to raise a child of a rapist, an unwanted child.

Clinton made the right choice, a democratic and morally correct choice, in pushing for pro-choice.

USA.

Best: Washington -- he set the precedent of executive transition when he could have been King.

For defining America's national identity as a Democracy rather than a Monarchy, Washington very NARROWLY edges out Lincoln and FDR in my mind. He made everything else possible. He also set the example for the rest of the Democratizing world.

Worst: Buchanan -- his incompetence greatly accelerated the tensions that led to the Civil War, the greatest crisis in our nation's history.

Maybe it was for the best it was faught when it was, but I don't give Buchanan credit for the unintended positive consequences of his do-nothing Presidency.

Damn, I was SO engorged in debating with a 12year old, that I forgot to put my own opinions as to best and worst leader of my nation.

Best: George Washington is a good choice, as is T. Roosevelt, Andrew Jackson, and Lincoln. I can't really choose from them and several others.

Worst: I'd say Bush senior, but he wasn't all that bad, I'd say Bush jr, but he might pull off some divine miracle in his remaining time, so I'll go with the jolly Herbert Hoover, only because everyone simply hates him for no apparent reason. I can't really choose the worst, because there is no apparent worst. So I withdraw my vote. Herbert Hoover, you lucky dog.

please re-ply like this:

United States of America
None of them
All of them
As with individuals in general, the more I find out about heads of state, the less I like.

Worst: Ford

What do you have against Ford? By pardoning both Nixon and the draft dodgers he put an end to a very tumultuous era. He did it even though he knew it might cost him the next election. An act of political bravery and a case of putting one's country ahead of one's political career. We should be so lucky if that is the worst the US has to offer.

Butcher shops kill animals. Abortions kill babies before birth. Would you like it if you were killed before you were born? As for the raped woman, put the child up for adoption. Don't murder him! As for the stolen images, that is poor logic. Because some pro-lifers stole images doesn't mean that being pro-life is evil.

Kindly stop threadjacking, will you ?

The Netherlands:

Best leader: I am tempted to go for Stadhouder Fredrick Henry, who presided over much of the Dutch Golden Age. But William of Orange may be even better, because he is responsible for the formation of the Netherlands.

Worst: Our current PM, Jan Peter Balkenende. Is IMHO largely responsible for the fact that the Netherlands haven't had a functional government for over a year (although the Stadhouder William V was pretty awful too).

Hey, I'm not saying he had some bright spots, but his absolutly absurd econmic ideas, well :cringe::vomit::cry:

Germany

Best: Otto von Bismarck
Why: Bismarck basically united Germany and avoided wars with brillant diplomatic constructions as long as he was (de facto) in power. Today his politics probably wouldn't work anymore and some of his inventions (like parts of our social security system) were not renewed for too long and are outdated, but during his own time he has to be considered a genius politician.

Worst: Hitler
Everybody knows why.

Ireland

Eamon De Valera

Eamon De Valera

He guided the country through the tumultuous post civil war years, declared a republic outside of the british commonwealth and kept us free from the danger of WW2.

Held the country back for decades with his overly traditional conservative views. Ignored demcracy when it suited him.

Norway

Best leader: Hmmm... can't remember anyone really great since the Kings of old.

Worst: That's easy. Kjell Magne Bondevik. He got like 20% of votes last election. Sold his ideology (if there ever was any) to the right wing, so that he could become PM. Didn't learn much from last time he was, when he had to resign mid-term. Now he got like 10% support.
He sits around talking claptrap, while his ministers fool around, destroying their parts of the country. School, military, agriculture, fishing, industry, workforce, libraries, you name it. They're messing up everything, and it's impossible to stop them until 2005...

Germany:

worst: guess!

best: that's hard to say. in some aspects Bismarck, in some others Brandt.

I love the irony inherent to your assessment. It's so true that often when it comes to leaders the greatest achievers are also the most flawed...

:worshp: Praise to Cunobelin for being the first in this thread to note this...

Denmark

Best: Canute, he conquerd England, Norway and the Orkney Islands
Worst: dont know

Doesn't that imply that you are better than everybody else? :p

Sweden

Worst: Karl XII. Why? Because he tried to invade Russia and failed. :p :p

Best: Karl XII. Why? Because he had the guts to take on Russia. :p :p :p

@yoda: congratz on your new avatar!

Germany

worst: Hitler - I am glad all germans here agree on this one

best: very hard, Bismarck did a good job to unificate germany, but his social reforms were only made to stop the rising social democrats and to get the laborers on his side not because he was a philanthrope. Maybe Helmut Schmidt (chancellor 76-82 IIRC), I just liked the way he turned out his cigarette half way to smoke it later. A sparing politician! :)

I was thinking of a Napoleon/Napoleon, but it's already been done ;)

France
Worst Leader: Louis XVI
He was too weak to reform France and avoid the revolution, too conservative to take its lead, and too much of a coward to die like a King should.
He ended up dishonoring his country and the monarchy, radicalised the revolution and destroying all chance of a moderate alternative between absolut monarchy and a blood-thirsty Robespierre dictatorship to emerge.
Only good point: he died bravely. And he was probably a "good man" - just a disaster as a King.

Best leader: hard to say ; I'm a bit at loss when trying to compare democratic Presidents and Kings.
Probably de Gaulle, for doing so much in WW2 to rally the Free Frenchs and for granting independance to Algeria, though there is a lot of things I do not approve in him.
