Is it just me or is this whole book a metaphor for relationships between man and God; how he is inaccessable yet present, how he can say he loves us yet we see no sign of it, how he is shrouded in myths, etc.

Is this a common interpretation?

If it is, I have to say the idea of calling God and heaven a faceless breaurocracy is very interesting, I'd say the best analogy there is.

Hard to get worked up into a spiritual lather over a faceless bureaucracy.

(damn, you made me forget how to spell bureaucracy again, had to look it up)

Actually, its easier than you imagine. Imagine if the Homeland Security was rumored to have amazing facilities, and beautiful wise clerks, etc...

Hehehehe.

*checks off list*

I guess to respond, we need to read Kafka. Sounds interesting tho'.

Oh man, Tom Ridge as God, what a concept! I never picture god as a pugnosed bruiser built like linebacker:lol:

Believe in God, or he'll beat the living crap outta ya!

That threat would probably get more people to church than threats of eternal damnation. A butt kicking is alot more believable than fire and brimstone.

The threat in The Castle seems to be even worse: Just being ignored.

Some people in the book ignore the Castle and don't care, so they aren't hurt by it. But people like K. (the main character) are obsessed with reaching it, and they are really hurt by the total alienation it can give.

The part I found most alike real life (at least the last part that got my attention) is that K. gets a few letters from a guy in the Castle saying good job, keep up the good work, etc, and "I have not forgotten you" (basically, I love you). But in K.'s experiences, the guy these letters are from is totalling ignoring him. Every time he tries to meet him he never can.

(I got no quip so I gotta post something literary. ;))

Have you read "the grand inquisitor" from the brothers karamazov? Jesus comes back during the spanish inquisition and is imprisoned. Great stuff!

Sounds good. But they seem a little heavy for me, I'll get to them eventually.
