The CivFanatics Fortress

The individual dwarves rooms could be smaller, but It's designed this way to eventually carve out some walls and combine some rooms for the nobles. The future rooms for workers will be smaller. The cabinets are work in progress.

Rheinmetall, how's are stone crafter/trade situation? I wasn't able to get him producing any crafts when I handed over the save.

I crafted a number of light/dark stone stuff. IIRC I left him doing that.

Hmmm maybe blindly hitting embark wasnt such a good idea.
With such limited access to wood. Iam not certain how to kick start my industry . the dwarfs themselves have surfficent food (fingers crossed) or there first winter even with the injection of some immigrants.

Q: with winter Iam hopping to get some trainning done. After searching wilki first. how dose one start trainning soliders ? i have a barracks area set up, I've tried using "v" "s" for soliders set to wrestling but they still idle

Q: With a very very few wood stockpiled. Iam wondering how to start up my metal industry ? Would people suggest rushing to magma ? I read you cant "channel" the magma into into a maga workshop and these have to built on specific location.
(Iam gonna try risking going out to grab the few trees outside durning the winter)

The only thing I can think of is waiting for the inland forest to grow and turn out some weapons before going deeper
(Still very much a newbie despite the massive layout)

You need steel to build a magma forge. So you must have some metal industry up before even attempting.

The inland forest normally takes at least a couple of years to grow.
Elephants normally run away from your wood cutting dwarves. Only by accident gets a dwarf trampled. I normally make sure to disable the Hunting labour for all immigrating dwarves. In order to get the magma metal industry working you need to get a steel bar first anyway. So you have to start with a wood based smelter/forge.
Soldiers start sparring in the barracks, if their squad is active (military screen "m") and if the squad is then stood down (not actively on duty, in the military screen press "v" for view squad and then "t" for duty. iirc)

Make sure you have a three tile wide road to your trade depot to get the full human caravan.

good luck.

hmmm What a disaster this has been.
Into the spring of the second year my fort suffered an attack by orgers and ratmen. The ratmen(s) proved easy to defeat but the orges killed two and gave another two "serious injury" these two are blinking red crosses

Q: Why cant I get ratman meat and leather ?
I tried all options in both my tannery and my butcher but I get "error" messages. (there corpses are inturned inside an indoor refuge pile - behind three door of course to stop the misasa form spreading)
EDIT: they did leave behind bones though which I used to craft for some trinkets to trade.

Q. What can I do for my poor badly injured dwarfs ?

Thanks for the help guys I building one of each workshop / furance to get a feel for this industry.

EDIT: Hmm he seems to be permantly disabled state, I built an extra bucket so the others can bring him food and water.
He in a miserable state unable to move at all.

Q. I noticed a lot of items around including bolts which my hunters use and a few other items like iron axe dropped by a killed merchant.
Is there anyway of moving these ? is there anyway of moving stone which are blocking open my vital door ways ? (or move the poor cripple dwarf somewhere remote (like in a locked room so that he can rip and not drain vital resources and man power)

cheers

1. I think you have to butcher the corpses first but I am not sure.

2. Pray. And assign them a bed. If they are badly injured (red injuries do not heal), they might eventualy lose the will to live (suicides are common in Dwarf Fortress).

3. Wait for people to pick the items up, sorry. I know, it really sucks having stone or an object blocking a door :(

Okay, I am sending Rhein the save so he can upload it. I heard soem odd beep when .raring the region, so I hope it got rared right, the save is fine though.

I only managed a month and a half, I somehow perma flooded the fortress this afternoon so I had to ctrl alt delete out, so after that setback I didn't have time to play again for a few hours.

I did however do a lot of micromanaging and we got hit with 21 more immigrants. Whoever's next just needs to keep expanding and building. I got all the tasks for each dwarf set (turned off caryying stuff for a lot of them unless it was related to their job, don't want masons, carpenters, metalsmiths, miners or farmers suddenly hauling stuff when you need something done.

I built a few more store rooms, I've made the waterfall area a statue garden, added a few tables for fun there, put a channel near the water to prevent flooding, added another farm, expanded the existing one (was digging for gems actualy). Also I am maknig that room with the two wells into a dining room (good central location).

I presume the dwarves don't eat ratmen or tan their hides at all.

Usually fellow dwarves carry the wounded to their own bed or any available free bed and tend them there. It doesn't actually require much time from the other dwarves to bring the wounded food and water every now & then so you might as well let them be.

If you want your dwarves to collect items from anywhere you need to have a storage set for the aforementioned items.

Xpost.

I built the wells in that room. I didn't know what Strider had planned for it but it seemed the best place for a meetinghall/dining room for me at the time.

PrinceScamps save.

Here is the moveable picture of the save for everyone to look at. I'll give it a day or two and see if anyone else wants to pick up the save.. if not.. then were started the Strider --> Rhein --> Princescamp order again.

Finishing the road could come as our next priority so we can start serious trading with the humans.

Should we already seek iron from past the chasm and make a run for the magma? I'm compelled to try it as fast as possible.

Otherwise it looks fine. Did we get any new immigrants during PrinceScamps turn?

I saw you guys already have lots of cut gems. Unless you want them to for crafts->trade, I found it in my games best to have gems not dug out and not cut yet. Often you will get nobles which like certain kinds o gems and demand the production of say 3 rose quartz items. In order to meet such demand it is enough to dig out three of these or just cut three rough rose quartz at the jeweler. Otherwise, the only way to make gems items are to merge three (!) of them into one window. (encrusting does not count). So you would need three x three rose quartz if you do it that way. Of course if some noble bugger demands something like a green diamond, there is not much you can do. ;-)

re. Rheinmetals questions:
- if the wounds are too serious (red) chances are good, that the poor fellow will not make it back, no matter what treatment. A cruel leader would just lock him away behind doors. Less serious wounds may heal over a period of several seasons.

- Make sure you have a dwarf with the tannery job enabled regarding the hide (if it is still unrotten). I don't recall dwarves eating the meat of hostile creatures ....

I am not sure our farms can handle anymore immigrants, little alone the 21 I got. We need to expand farming first and finish getting workshops set up. Then go to the magma. (And yes, I am on vacation, but for this night and two more nights I found wireless access, about 100 feet away.)

I'm sure our farms can handle more. We just need more farmers.

Our farms are more than large enough and I see 3 growers near-by. I'll check to see what the problem is when I pick-up the game tonight.

In the meanwhile, here are 500 pieces of rare collectible coins. ;)

Well my game has been bugged out and forced me to restart.
Mainly flood gate issues. Cancelling floodgates, building new job orders to stop floodgate from blocking cancelling and it seems to have stuffed up as mechanics taken a whole year to carry out a add lever command.
Bummer

Okay, I got a road connecting our trade depot to the outside. So we can have wagons come and trade with us soon. Other than that... we have plenty of food. So much food that I shut down our western farm and made it into a tree farm. I expanded our main entrance some and dug out around the river.

I also turned our farms from floodgate farming to seasonal flooding. Using fortifications you can just use the seasonal flooding without the risk of accidentally killing your entire fortress.

Save.
