Science rules all in Civ 5, and Babylon is made to use/abuse that.
policy trees, increases in tile improvements, units, buildings, resources, etc etc etc... it's all based upon your science power.
Getting enough gold to handle RAs and CSs is simple enough for any civ. Not to mention, playing as Songhai, I don't get more than 3-4 barb huts on a standard map. After medieval rolls around, they don't seem to spawn much any more due to units being all over the map and the expansions of the AI. Only on maps (Archi/small continents) where you and the AI can't spread do they keep coming back.
triple pillage for cities is sweet though.
