The coming hissy fit

Being terrified gives the terrorists exactly what they want. The point of terrorism isn't to kill us all, that would be impossible with the little resources they have, the point is to disrupt our lives through fear. I'm as afraid of dying in a terrorist attack as I am getting into my car to drive somewhere. I'm much more likely to die in a car accident than a terrorist attack, but that doesn't stop me from driving, just like a terrorist attack won't stop me from doing my every day activities.

I dont think the people of the USA would be terrified as much as they would be extremely pissed off and looking for a fight. Thats not quite what the terrorists are aiming for honestly.....they dont particularly care for people that fight back....

A terrorist attack would just mean we would get all Toby Keith all over again....

In that case, I think we should compromise with the radical Muslims.

Well, I don't think that I'm not allowed to carry liquids on a plane because we're pissed off and looking for a fight. I'd say that's fear. The fear/anger mental divide is a slim one, too.

And yes, the terrorists are kinda looking for a fight. They're willing to die, in fact (and get civilians killed, to boot), for this fight. And, due to over-reactions, the fight is much more expensive for their enemies than it is for them.

Six explosives were detonated along a pipeline in Veracruz this morning. The disruption shut down some factories in Mexico. It may be shutting down a couple car plants this week.

Oh, you were talking about islamic terrorists, not local anti-government groups. ;)

After the pissed off phase wore off, then we got a wee bit terrified.

Anyway, we'd definiteily need a brief "time out" for about a few hours just to make sure we got our bearings before we dish out pain. Maybe we'll perform better on some of the non-military aspects of the fight.

Again? Didn't that happen a few months ago, too?

I disagree with you here. Life in America pretty much goes on the same way it always has....no more, no less.

Concerned? Absolutely. Terrified? nyaaaa.

you apparently forgot that 9/11 CHANGED EVERYTHING

you apparently forgot that 9/11 CHANGED EVERYTHING

Define everything.

I go to work - I did before
I pay my taxes - I did before
I watch televison and read - I did before
I'm aware that no one and nowhere is truely safe - I was before
I am fully aware that the government is inept and responds to most situations either with a kneejerk reaction and/or in a fashion that will cost me (in taxes) eventually -it always has

The only people for which this changed everything...are those who went through life with their heads in the sand.Or as in the current resident of the Oval office, up their own rear.

you apparently forgot that 9/11 CHANGED EVERYTHING

Changed how we view terrorism and our security for certain. But the vast majority of people today go to work and then go home just like they did pre-9/11.

So did 9-11 prove there is a credible new threat to our daily lives or not?

Cuz, you know, if terrorism can only kill 1,500 people inside the US every decade (which is about what OBL has managed since 1993) then it's not a f*cking threat compared to, like, bees.

On the other hand, if terrorism is like oMG SUPAR DANGEr then you'd think people wouldn't be "going around living their lives like normal." Maybe the fact that they are is a sign that the world was normal before 9-11 and normal after?

In this decade alone he's managed to rack up a decent sized bodybount.

As for the response, as a citizen myself? I'd get ready to go somewere else and dis out some packback in spades. It's not even a strain on my life anymore since by the third deployment I had the checklist for personal affairs and effects down cold. Going into places were they blast prayers over the loudspeakers praying for my blood and my death and then putting bullets in them? well that never gets old.

I think combating terror comes down to several factors, one of them being a military response. Political, economic and social aspects need to be addressed as well. We would raid and capture guys and ask them why they were fighting us...

" I needed money to feed my kids man " was a common response. We diden't capture a lot of hardcore types though. They died fighting. And die they did. I think that says a lot about Iraq, always stuck out in my mind.

If I hung out with people like you more often, I'd throw away 3 years of working on a phd dissertation, re-enlist, and start a new dissertation later. The problem is 1. I'm just too old to re-enlist thus 2. they'd make me be a stinkn officer.

You're ok, for a jarhead (82nd abn in tha house).
