The Conquest Training Game

I know the most difficult aspects of the game are city placement and micromanaging. I think you will find this to be true among all beginners. I have read just about every thread there is about settler factories, but I still cannot quite grasp it. So maybe that might be a good idea. This training game is a good idea too, maybe you should have started it in the succession forum though. Too many great games to be played in GOTM forum. Why don't you bump Detlef and me up a few spaces in the GPR for sticking with it ;) .

Hi, I am new to this game. I cannot play game of the month because I don't know how to install everything. Does this game need anything to be installed to play? And do you have room? And could you tell me what a settler factory is Mauer? Sorry, too many questions I guess.

Hello Dan, and welcome to the forum :wavey: . Downloads can be a bummer, and installing them can also be somewhat confusing. This game doesn't need any though, and I don't think the COTM's need any additional downloads. Except v1.22 patch. There is more than enough room in this game, but I think we might be at a transitional phase as far as direction of it. Ainwood should post soon about what he wants to do in here. This might be the perfect spot for you. Um, settler factory. Well, it is somehow figuring out with a brain much larger than mine  how to get enough food and enough shields to have a city produce a settler every 4 turns. I don't quite have the dynamics of it down either so don't worry. :crazyeye:

Hi Mauer, I don't have conquest, and don't know where to get the v1.22. I have Civilizations 3 Gold Edition and that is all. I don't know if I should play this anyways, because I find it kind of hard to follow most of these threads.

HI Dan. :)

Are you meaning this training game (which is a succession game, rather than a competition as such), or the actual Games Of The Month competitions?

If the latter, its not really as confusing as it might seem - just download teh saves from gotm.civfanatics.net and away you go! You have Conquests, so you can play the C3C game with no modifications, and you have PTW so you can play the PTW version with no downloads. If you have any questions, let me know (PM or email to gotm@civfanatics.net )

First of all, hi Dan.
Don't worrie about Mauers confusing posts :D . Without jokes, take some time, read the posts and learn by playing civ around the clock. After 10 years learning you can evantually beat the great SirPleb. ;)
You are welcome if you wanna be a part of this Training game.

OK, here are my turns:

490: set lux to 10% (I don't want rioting citys)
change Tatung to spearman
captured Ashure and a Bab settler near Ellipi

470: Beijing build settler, next galley

450: killed one Bab spear and 3 bowman and lost 2 horseman and 1 galley

430: Shanghei build horseman, next sword
Nanking build horseman next spear (as MP)
Tsingtao build horsman, next horseman
killed one Bab bowman and lost one horse

410: Canton build horseman, next spear (as MP)
Xinjian build horseman, next horseman
changed Ur to spearman (as MP)

390: captured Ellipi

370: peace with atztecs (only the worldmap as goody :( )
Beijing builds galley, next worker

350: Shanghei builds swordman, next sword
captured Uruk
signed peace with Babylon for lit, mono and monarchy (they only have
two towns left)

330: Beijing build worker, next worker
Ur build spear, next library
Canton build spear, next sword
Nanking build spear, next horseman
Chengdu build horseman, next horse

310: Xinjian build horseman, next library

I went our forces near the greece border. I would say thats our next opponent for war. We have a good base and enough units to clear the continent. The big jungle helps us a lot. (The Ai's growing slowly and can't fast build units) I started to build a little bit culture to save our territory growing. Also some workers are neccesary at the jungle tiles.

I forgot, i have one settler and a sword on a galley. I hope we find new lands.
And one settler/sword combo sit in the jungle NW of Ellipi. We can settle there, this fills the country.

A entertainer is a citicen who doesn't work a tile. He produces no shields and no food but i think he eats food. You slow down your productivity.

Rioting can be controlled with military policemen (warriors are the cheapest), luxuries, specialists or improvements (temples etc).

In the early game when settlements are small and you have other building priorities, building temples etc can be a bit wasteful in terms of happiness control. In higher levels, luxuries at 10-20% is relatively 'normal', but you should try to get any luxury resources that you can hooked-up so that you can minimise the amount you spend on keeping people happy.

DR made the point that you should try to avoid entertainers where possible, because they are not productive.

One trick often overlooked is the use of other specialists. If you only have one town that might riot (for example because it is much bigger than the others - common in the early game), it is a bit wasteful to raise the luxuries rate for your entire empire for the sake of one town. And perhaps you only need to control happiness for one or two turns until you pop a settler. In this case, you should make a scientist or taxman. The reason for this is that the scientist or taxman will be made from an unhappy citizen - you've reduced unhappiness without the same loss of productivity. :goodjob:

Temples are seldom of use for happiness control. They cost you 1 gpt for maintenance and make one unhappy person content. Guess how much it would cost in gpt to keep that person content without a temple? Yep, 1 gpt! So the Temple's only positive return on investment is to increase culture. Unless you are religious or you really want a culture victory it absorbs a lot of shields that could be used to build units that would do you more good.

This is probably the best advice I have gotten out of this forum. And I think I got it from a post by Alanh earlier in this thread somewhere. I had a terrible improvement addiction in the early game. I had to force myself to stop. It really does pay off though.
Edit: So it is you now Schmiddi. Unless we want to let Dan squeeze in there.

ainwood, I mean this game, the conquest training game looks too hard and confusing. I tried to play on emperor game, and I lost in 110 BC to Russians. There is no way I can play at the level ya'll are playing at! Maybe I will just watch in here for a little while.

It's not that bad!

We're making it seem harder than it is, but if you look we're doing quite well. Its just a few little things to piece together, and you'll see that this game isn't that hard!
