The European Project: the future of the EU.

isn't the Western silencing done by Leftists outshouting the Rightists who then leave in anger or something ? Didn't this happen recently or something ? Free press and support of auotocratic leadership are actually two different things . Free press told us so many times that Russia was falling apart . Which it was to about two years ago . Is positive words about Russia compelling enough to run the wole gauntlet again ?

I want to know what the free press has to say about Russia. I am tired of what our press has to say about them.
We know of all the rot in the US because of free press.
How can anyone claim Russia or China has any semblance to a democratic state without internal free press, free scrutiny!?

nobody claims Russia or China are democracies . If there are such people , they certainly are not employed by me ... The Democracy as a weapon has outlived its use , as in the US officially abandoning it . Main Opposition party leader will soon be removed by courts in New Turkey , the EU , supposed champions of Democracy , the only power worth mentioning or whatever will say nothing about it because why , we are not worthy or whatever . We have not been worthy since 1950s or 60s when we were declared as a candidate . When Modi thinks he will have millions to spare , somehow , ı really don't care for 1950s propaganda . For those who think everything is spam , Indians are still envisioning expeditionary forces to be sent over , to countries geographically near the European stuff ... lf nuclear winter was not a thing , all the troubles of this so called free press would have been solved long ago .

Weaponizing democracy – now there is an idea.

Or rather, that precisely was the original idea – in the 19th c. It is obviously about power. To the extent it can be a weapon, then clearly currently much misunderstood, or at least often no longer understood how to wield properly anymore. Except maybe by fx the Ukranians.

If autocracy might be in the ascendant for now, then it just remains to wait for the next wave of revolutions against it.

Dermocracy for us, autocracy for them suits me just fine, you can lead the horse to water but cannot force it to drink,

sometimes the horse is a donkey too ;)

The current crop of autocracies want to – if they cannot end it outright – at least squash actual people power, nerf it, put it in a little box where it cannot harm then. Because it is dangerous to them.

It's how Ukraine had an actual revolution on 2014, but Russia is damned if it is ever going to admit that was what actually happened – anything is better than admitting what makes actual difference.

Russia had an actual revolution too - they shot the Tsar and his entire family dead in a ditch and that was that -

and ofcourse who can forget 1989 when the Russian army just went home and we liberated Eastern Europe in an afternoon.

Strange how they seem to have forgot all about that, dictatorships are always a fickle proposition, nothing "stable" about it :D

if people are telling you that the Europeans do not care for Democracy and thus people have more apt places to use their divisions , it might be rather more useful not to mock them as in you are a better person , and will not deign to give your better things because people are not worthy . Ukranians are dying in numbers you will automatically reject because that seemed a best way to build up a force to match people's divisions should be your guiding light , if there are reading comprehension issues .

As long as all foreigners keep killing eachother in far away places we will win any war. Only the Chinese seem to understand that, avoiding all war alltogether is the best plan, let's see how long that lasts.

and what makes you think the foreigners' wars will not touch you ? Some sort of imperial majestiousness ?

Strangely, that's not a wisdom that transfers itself to Putin, when he holds Xi's hand.

The European powers haven't been at war with each other for 80 years now and counting - a first since the European national states were formed.

I believe the Europeans finally had enough after two very destructive 20th Century wars. Thirty million deaths, give or take, in Europe alone. The European Union and its frontrunner did their bit too. It's much more beneficial to trade with your neighbors and get rich that way, instead of resorting to endless costly wars. In that sense, the EU has been a roaring succes, which is also why autocrats in the US, Russia and Asia hate it so much, though it's not the only reason.

Russia doesn't learn from past mistakes; it seems destined to repeat them forever in a cycle of never ending violence. In fact, Putin's Russia idolizes the past, meaning a past that only exists as propaganda. Progress is being characterized as a threat, undermining traditional 'Russian values'. Under Putin, what's left of innovation and entrepreneurship in Russia, will be extinguished. Russia is headed towards becoming a satellite orbiting China in all aspects that matter.

So the French Prime Minister has lost his vote of confidence.

I don't have a clue what will happen now ?
He commited suicide by calling for a vote of confidence knowing he wouldn't win it. Macron can either choose a new PM to try to get a majority in parliament (he announced last night that he would be doing that this week, but it seems very unlikely for him to find someone suitable) or dissolve the assembly and have us vote again in a month (which is unlikely to lead to a more stable assembly).
The question is wether the center left PS will be able to get their chance at governing, and if so wether they will govern in a Macron-light way or if they will actually attempt some kind of change.

Who ever gets landed with the job, is overwhelmingly likely going to have to deal with the disagreeable task of fiscal reforms for France...

Problem is : not everyone agrees on what fiscal reforms are needed. The left wants to bring back higher taxes on the rich, and reduce the amount of tax breaks given to companies while the right wants to stop funding things that rely on state funding in order to lower expanses, while making ordinary workers work more hours without any increase in pay to boost french companies' efficiency.

New event : Macron names Sebastien Lecornu (current minister of the army) prime minister. He's basically more of the same, so it means he wants to continue down the same path that has failed twice in the past year. There's a very good chance the assembly refuses him outright because the far right and the radical left don't want him and the center left now feels slighted for not being considered for PM.
