The future of Fall from Heaven

Kael is actually (insert candidate)

I expect posters of this to be rather frequent in 2012!! :p

specially if there are a few for each candidate ;)

Why not just mod M&B to be more "FFH" like?

Good point. I was really talking about the whole notion loosely hinted at by Morrowind, Oblivion, and more closely with Mount and Blade ... that you can have an open ended expoloration experience and still affect surrounding Kingdoms and Empires as if there was an actual storyline.

Honestly I wouldn't mind whether it was real time or Turn Based (Disgaea anyone??)

But a persistent and changing world where a free-ranging RPG has influence over neighboring empires has a cool effect. Turn Based or Real Time. Especially if you have the option of starting up your own kingdom, building new cities, expanding those cities, capturing opponent cities, razing opponent cities, expanding a captured city, suffer armed rebellion from an angry captured city ... etc.

Basically you start out as a Hero, with a band of Friends/ Mercenaries ... and you have the option of starting your own empire. Also, I wouldn't want you to be railroaded into having to be the same hero every time, or building your cities in the same place every time ... or even having the same map every time.

But random maps aside, as long as it was a semi-persistent world with different heroes you can choose, it would be spectacular. Especially if NEW quests show up during the persistent world, and (possibly) are different depending which hero you are.

Imagine Rathus Denmora recruiting Alaskan the Assasin, Gibbon, and possibly Hemah as partners in world conquest/ adventure.

And just like in Disgaia, levels are almost limitless and there are a few people that can instantly squash you if you dare oppose them ... and not hard-coded either, so if you are high enough level you can defeat them (Like a GOD for instance).

so anyways, thats a rough sketch of my idea ... and while it sounds like a game developer's worst nightmare, I hope that may help to inspire something awesome ;)

Ugh, Steam and Impulse both are pretty crappy. I hate it when they require you to install their software, which sets itself to run at startup on your PC, and is required to be running in order to install/uninstall (and sometimes play) the game.

GamersGate is far better. Much much much better. Die you dirty mother of a smelly goat, Steam.

Agreed but Impulse is nothing like Steam and shouldn't be mentioned in the same sentence. Anything Impulse does that's automated can be disabled, including it starting up or residing in the task bar and Impulse does not fire up when you launch your games the way Steam usually does. Impulse at it's simplest is a glorified web browser with some account/game management conveniences built in (which is how I use it - it doesn't do anything unless I fire it up).

There are lots of methods of digital distribution. Direct2Drive is pretty harmless (have to allow it to install a simple download manager). Impulse is slightly more complicated. Steam is far too intrusive for my tastes. And there plenty of others.

Most digital sources are going to want you to install something, even if it's just a DL manager, to ensure you get the monster downloads cleanly (less liability for them).

I've had Steam installed and startup-disabled for several years now. It has never re-enabled without my permission (with the exception of when I re-installed it, obviously).

Quicktime, anything Adobe, RealPlayer (shudder), MS Office; these all come back like cockroaches.

I'm definitely in the camp that doesn't comprehend the anti-Steam rhetoric on this site, but to each their own, I guess. I just hope this thread doesn't derail into another 7 page argument about the good and evil of minimally-intrusive DRM. Er, excuse me, draconian Orwellian OMG its got a EULA so it must be EVIL big brother-style spyware. (Or perhaps something in between).

Wow. I can't believe its finally happened. Guess I shouldn't be suprised though. FFH and the many modmodmodmods are HIGH QUALITY WORK!

Just want to thank everyone that has been working on FFH for all these years. I'm not a very active member in the community but I have lurked here for longer then I can remember (I wasn't sufficiently motivated to create an account until I was overflowing with recommendations and wish-lists.) Mods are the kind of thing that rarely come to fruition, especially ambitious ones, and the dedication you guys showed is beyond my comprehension.

I still get lost in the Fall from Heaven world (today I caught myself reminiscing about my biggest city ever with a pop count of 44). I still get my friends hooked from time to time. I still catch myself at work sometimes trying to decide which civ I am going to play when I get home. Of course I have my off months from time to time, but I've never put it down for good. Its probably the game I've played more than any other ever.

So that got long winded quick. Thanks again for this game, I can't explain how exciting it is to me to know that the game will be reborn again. Godspeed with your project and know that there are many other lurking/underground fans out there who will be equally excited by this news!

EDIT: I had a funny memory of thinking about how cool it would be when shadow mana was finally implemented. Hahaha.

It's hard to stay focused when someone dangles a carrot in front of you, and just keeps it dangling just out of reach for nearly two-and-a-half months.

but it IS a tastie looking carrot.

in truth, i think it is a bit regrettable that the announcement was made without ANY information to go with it. I'm certainly looking forward to it, but im starting to wonder if we've all been trolled in the most epic fashion.

I've already beat this dead horse in the Civ5 thread, but I'm pretty constantly amazed by the level of really irrational paranoia about Steam on these forums.

And you know you can disable the run at startup thing, right? Furthermore, considering most people running Steam have computers capable of running more processor-intensive games, I think most people probably would prefer it to run at startup.

I think a major division is between hardcore gamers and the rest of us. I just don't see any reason to have to have steam running for just one game. I greatly prefer to use the Windows games explorer to manage games. I don't want to be forced to switch. Since I run my laptop at 1680x1050 but civ4 at 1024x768, there are actually problems that result from using an application to launch games!

I have no problem with steam being an option. I have a large problem with it being mandatory.

You've never used steam have you? The games are run completely normally, not inside the steam app. The resolution is unaffected. Or what did you mean by this sentence?

The problem is with the app open, not that civ runs inside the app. My understanding of steam is that you need to launch steam games from within the steam app. Since my screen res decreases significantly when civ launches, if the app is anything but minimized or closed, Windows will change the size of the window, which I hate. The only reason I run civ4 at such a low resolution is because the interface, particularly the tech progress bar, doesn't scale, so it looks really ugly at other resolutions.

There's a simple solution to this problem:

Don't buy games where Steam are required. If a developer chooses to make their game Steam-only, that's their choice. If a large percentage of people don't like it, then people won't get it.

Honestly, I don't understand all the Steam-hate. My guess is a lot of people that complain about it haven't even tried it. Bandwagons and such.

You can create shortcuts that launch the games. And I don't really understand the resolution changing stuff you are talking about.
