The death of Wilhelmus
Wilhelmus was waiting in his palace.
He called it a palace, but it was really more like a cave. It was carved in the big mountain just by lake Geneva. He had ordered the guards on a break, he needed some time for himself. He was reading the Black Book of Chieftains while waiting, when he heard steps coming from outside his little cave.
"YOU!" yelled a voice behind him. Wilhelmus turned around, and saw quite an insane sight.
It was a man. A man who had blood all over his clothes, and tears in his eyes. He fit in this dark environment perfectly; because Chief Wilhelmus's cave really was decorated strangely. Dark animal furs were all around the so-called palace, and a couble of torches gave a warm yet dark atmosphere to this space. "Only a lunatic could live in a hole like that", said Wilhelmus's guards every so often, and thats why nobody usually visited him. So it really was strange when Wilhelmus said:
"I've been expecting you, Josef."
"YOU!" was all Josef could say.
"Oh, don't tell that you are angry at me.."
"You thought I'd never get out, didn't you? You thought you had driven me too insane to ever flee the cages you put me in! But you are wrong, Wilhelmus, dead wrong! You thought you had locked me up forever, but I escaped!" An insane glow of victory shined in Josef's eyes. "For years, for decades, I have had only one dream; to crush you like a bug. I was afraid of you once, but I'm not anymore. You left me all alone, but being alone just gave me more strenght. I know who you are, Wilhelmus!"
"Is that so? And who am I?"
"You are... pure evil! I know that you have studied the mysteries of the darker side of the universe. I know that it has given you powers.. strange powers. But it is all over now, your reign of Satanic terror is over!
A craven flew over them. They couldn't see it from the cave, naturally, but they could hear it yell. Thats when Josef grabbed a club. It was the biggest club he had ever seen, it was Wilhelmus's club. Nobody had touched it except Chief Wilhelmus and everyone had expected him to be really strong, because the club looked heavy. But for Josef's amazement, it wasn't. Josef lifted the club and smashed it into Wilhelmus's head.
Wilhelmus fell down.
"Where are your guards now?" asked Josef with a resentful look on his face. He had won, he knew it. Wilhelmus had used his powers to make Josef go insane, then locked him up for decades, but now he had gotten his revenge.
Wilhelmus tried to open his mouth, but all that came out was blood. Finaly, he managed to whisper: "I ordered them away."
"Why?" asked Josef. Suddenly he was struck with fear. Panic. Desperation. Had Wilhelmus been expecting this? Of course he had, Josef could see it in his eyes. That raging glow of insane stare. The stare. Wilhelmus was giving him the stare again. And once again Josef noticed how his eyes turned red; and Josef knew that Wilhelmus wasn't looking at him. Wilhelmus was looking through him. Josef turned around and saw the book. The book with black covers seemed to have something glowing around it..
"you can see the glow, can't you?" dying Wilhelmus whispered with his last powers. "It calls you. It is the book of Pytho. You can see the glow on me too, can't you?"
Josef looked at Wilhelmus. Yes, he could see the glow. WIlhelmus was glowing. He was turning red, but it wasn't because of the blood. The entire dark cave was starting to seem red to Josef.
"What are you doing to me?"
"I am giving you my powers."
"NO! STAY AWAY FROM ME!"
"Very well. You have the right to chooce. So far I've known all the choices you've made. When I met you, you were a friendly, peaceloving rich nobleman. But you were bored. You were thrilled when you met me, because you felt the same glow you are seeing now. You didn't see it then, but you can see it now, can't you? You choce to follow me, even thouh you knew what I was. You felt it. You felt the glow. Now, its up to you. My guards will be back in five minutes. The book is waiting for you. If you want to walk out, then do so. The guards will rip me from my power and take it for themselves. They will abuse it, of course, but not nearly as badly as I did. They will kill far less people than I did. If you want to wait for the guards, then do so. They will kill you, and then take power. Yet, there is a third option, my good friend Josef! Look at the book of Pytho. Five minutes will be enough. You will have all the power I had, and even more. And you will terrorize your people and other peoples, and you will be worse than I was, because you are calm, you are calculative, you are not a barbarian like I am, you are a nobleman. Its your choice."
"I would never have that kind of power! I came to destroy you to get rid of that power, I don't want to become a new evil after killing the old one!"
"But you desire power. I allowed you to taste it before you got locked up. You know how it feels. Once you've tasted it, you can't live without it. Search your soul, and you know it. You could do the right thing, but you would never be happy."
And then, Wilhelmus closed his eyes. For good.
Josef wanted to run. He wanted to leave the corpse of Wilhelmus, he wanted to leave that black book with a raging glow, but he couldn't. He couldn't stop thinking about the power. He wanted it. He lusted it. And so, he grabbed the book. Wilhelmus had left a mark from where he had left off reading the book. He was reading a chapter entitled "Death of the Chieftain".
"NOOOOOOO!" yelled Josef. He knew the mistake he had done. And suddenly, the guards were in the palace.
"Don't come any closer!" yelled Josef, and for his utter amazement, the guards did what he told them to do. Suddenly the guards were glowing too. Everything was. And the guards looked at Josef with great fear in their eyes. He couldn't see his own eyes, but he knew what kind of a stare he was having. He was looking straight through the guards, straight into their souls, and it shivered them. He saw that like a storm of autumn night, his stare shattered every piece of their souls.
"I am your new chieftain, and you shall be my guards", said Josef to them. And the guards nodded before running away in panic. Josef turned his back on them and continued reading the book of Pytho.
