The History of NESing

To put things in perspective, I would like to peruse a history of NESing, I’ve been here since (???) and knowing what there is, was, was planned, etc would be of great use, pulling together all the information might facilitate a better flow of said information and remove market (economist in me) NESing inefficiencies. I could think of nothing worse than working on a map, slaving away books in hand, eyes going a funny shade from to much screen time only to find out something similar has been done and could have been retrofitted (Europe between 1550-1600 is an evil edifice full of hate for the budding cartographer amongst us, me).

Care to offer comments/criticism on my 1000 BC one while you're at it?

Rather than go to all this effort, couldn't you just click the button which inverts the order of threads so that the oldest show first?

Are you suggesting that all we're going to do is list threads? Moreover, who actually reads through thread by thread? Even rereading an old NES is often trouble enough.

Hmm, I think I essentially see NESing very different to T.

We progress, advance. I honestly don't see any value in taking note of a particular good update written by Bridjaguar last year. The people who were involved at the time read it, enjoyed it and used it.

I don't see this as the creation of something permanent and of value.

While this may be a nice trip down memory lane for the nes you have played in.. i'm not really sure what it means to anyone else.

Perhaps if you really think there is older nes of note (an i honestly think that such a thing does not exist) we could create a list of them. Any NES worth its salt would have linked to all the updates in the OP's. If someone perhaps was interested in such a thing, then they could quickly and easily read them.

A "Hall of Fame" for NES perhaps?

THAT almost makes sense.. an essay of the evolution of NES maps seems very droll to me..

I agree, Masada. I envision the completed history as having an index of created historical maps, alternate histories, etc.

And such research will probably help the wiki (hint hint) as well.

These things are of value but no way have to be linked with the history. Compiling all the available world maps merely needs someone to trawl through the map threads..

An Alt-hists? Well thats not my department at all so i'll not comment.

Ok, so don't participate. I really don't think it harms anybody if some people in this community decide to examine the past. If you don't care for it, then don't help and don't read.

Odd, I don't remeber anywhere suggesting I planned to

Then why are you commenting? :p

Because this is a forum, its what we do.

What exactly would you put in your own "Hall of Fame"?

In the time I have been here, the only NES (IMO) that has ran for any decent length of time, and was of a high quality is Birdjaguar's first NES.

Again tho, I don't see why anyone would want to read the updates other than those who played in it.

I do find that quite depressing, but how many NES have gone for any real length, or had a proper conclusion in the last year or so?

Then good night and thanks for playing; there's a lovely parting gift at the door. :p

So, the first thing that needs writing is a foreword or introduction, something like a personal note on our decision to write this history, and why chronicling the past of NESing is essential to its' future. A couple notable quotes on NESing wouldn't go amiss here either, from now or the past. I'll work on the introduction here in France, but feel free to send me quotes or statements by PM.

There's no point in literally transcribing an update into a history. That's like putting a copy of the Mahabharata in a History of India: you'll make the book three times as long. :p I don't think that's what we're doing.

Then I am confused as to why you are posting on this thread

To be amused by how quickly and easily people become offended if you don't agree with them.

I'm sorry but just because my opinion doesnt match yours, doesnt mean I can't make it.

Perhaps rather than lining up to say how glorious the idea is, with some negative comments as well, the idea will have to gain some backbone.. survival of the fittest! ;)

Think? Glad your not certain either.

I'll try to take a specific example~

examining the development of the standard 'Jason map' and early mapping techniques in general?

Please don't become a teacher. You will kill through boredom alone! Who on earth could be interested in that other than you? (q someone to chime in)

Maps.. is it not enough assume that if you do the same thing enough times, you improve? We have had the time for more people to have a stab at making a better maps, an thus we now have better maps. More time, more effort = Advancement.

Documenting that maps used to be pretty rubbish, and got better seems pretty obvious, and a waste of time to me.

You can make them, but you're being noisy and not altogether helpful, and at some point your comments will be spam, and at that point, you cannot make them anymore.

Ooh, look at me, I can make words mean stuff literally! "I don't think that's what we're doing" is pretty obviously sarcastic in that I know that's not what we're doing.

Christ, you rant about us not respecting your opinions, then you refuse to acknowledge we might have different interests than you.

It's actually not all that uninstructive, and could be useful in, say, a mapmaking tutorial, which I think some people would like to read, thank you very much.

Okay, you've made your opinion known. What are you still doing here then?

EDIT:

To be amused by how quickly and easily people become offended if you don't agree with them.

Its not that I'm offended by others not agreeing with me, its that I'm a little annoyed when everything done has to be towards some "common good," or rather have a purpose that serves to better the community as a whole. Why can't it just be something fun for some people to do?
