So, some weeks back I purchased Planescape Torment. I just finished it.
I'd say it's pretty dang good, but probably just a tad overrated. Like it's a 9 out of 10 maybe.
The problem, I found, was that most of the good juicy stuff happens in the first third and the last third. There is a lull in the middle where you apparently "discover" new information about your character but you actually already know it. And then when you go to a bunch of different planes, it wasn't as interesting anymore as Sigil and its wards. It picks up again towards the end though. The ending area finally goes back to revealing a bunch of stuff again, which is something the game was forgetting to do for a while there. The fun is discovering who you are, but as I said, there's a long part where you're slugging through a bunch of monsters or running past them and getting annoyed at the pathfinding.
Still, 9 out of 10, and a great example of storytelling as it should be in a game. Some NPCs were overkill though. There are a few people I swear I talked to for 40 minutes each. I guess I could have ignored them. But dug deep in these conversations are experience points... And also intersting stuff about the Planescape setting, which is cool and inspired me a few things for my own D&D worlds.
