The many questions-not-worth-their-own-thread question thread XV

Which is correct? Traveler or Traveller?

I've noticed that older literature (namely The Time Machine) uses Traveller, yet FireFox and Microsoft Word tells me that Traveler is correct.

Is it an American English/Queen's English difference?

Yes.

Traveller! Firefox and MS Word come with US English as default. Download British English dictionaries and join the rest of us. :)

When in doubt, go for Queen's English.

I personally favour adding that extra "U" to various words to provide some colour in my posts and tip my hat to our Canadian and British friends. Also, because it amuses me. :D

US spellings are handy in Scrabble though.

Manoeuvre your way to success with the colour and splendour of Queen's English! :D

What are some ways in which the interdependence of nations may actually escalate the risk of armed conflict?
More points of contact can very easily mean more things to disagree about.

Bah, WIM. Iberians and Britons are both notoriously bad at speaking their own languages. It's all the imperialistic blood. :)

Nope, same distribution for US and proper English scrabs.

I'm not sure if the US official dictionary (TWL) allows English spellings like the SOWPODS does with US ones. SOWPODS has more words in it anyway.

No, American Scrabble sets have lots of extra U's, because we use that letter far MORE than every other country. Also, U.S. Scrabble sets include one number - "2" - that can be used as a letter.

"U goin 2 ur frends 2nite?"
"ya r u comin 2?"
"ya but ur gunna be 2 late 2 watch the game"
"no wai ur liein"
"wai liek ur alredy 2 late n u 4got 2 pick up tom"
"i thot u wer gettin him"
"no u"

etc. :(

How do people become nicer?

Incentives. Or if you're being idealistic, altruism.

Just observe when you're not nice to someone, and think that next time you will be.

It also helps, if you think for yourself why you're not always nice to people. Answers to that question can be far from trivial.

Becoming nicer doesn't happen overnight. Every now and then you might become disappointed of yourself or think that people treat you as a doormat because you're letting them (some will maybe do so, but just don't make them part of your life). On the other hand, it's more often rewarding and also, you'll notice that the world gives you back the attitude you're sending to it.

What is it called when an article is written by some news company and it appears in multiple newspapers? I run into them alot when working with my archives (a lot of time is spent trying to sort them out).
