Riiinnngggg . . . .
Gregory shifted in his sleep, pushing himself upright in bed. Beside him, Rachel stirred.
“Is it Andrew and Kara?” she mumbled. “I’ll get it.”
“No, Rachel, it’s the phone,” Gregory told her. “Go back to sleep. I’ll handle it.”
Rachel mumbled something Gregory couldn’t translate, then settled. The King of Hawai’i sighed, then reached over to the phone and picked it up.
“Aloha?” he asked.
“Your majesty? It’s General Tompkins. We have a situation developing in Asia.”
“A situation, General? Over all of Asia?” Gregory regretted saying it instantly – Rachel stiffened behind him – she hadn’t been asleep after all.
“Yes sir. It appears that about ten hours ago, elements of the Chinese Army crossed the border into the Demon Realm, riding on massive partisan uprising’s heels. They’ve achieved complete aerospace dominance over the region, and their army is bashing aside all obstacles. The Realm’s forces are putting up what resistance they can, but there’s very little they can do.”
“My god,” Gregory murmured. “My god. What elements do we have in the area?”
“Very few, sir. Second Fleet is in Tokyo, and we have air units and elements of the 4th Division in Japan, but most of our units are concentrated around the Home Islands and in the Falklands. I’ve issued orders for First Fleet to head for the Philippines and Third Fleet to follow when it arrives from the Falklands.”
“Good. That should be good enough.” Gregory struggled to kick-start his brain. “What about Korea?”
“We’ve negotiated some access treaties, and I have the 501st’s assurance of support against China,” Tompkins said.
“Good,” Gregory said. “Is that all?”
“Ah, no. The Indians have launched a counterattack in Tibet. It hasn’t gone well, from the sketchy reports we’ve received.”
“How bad is it?” Gregory asked. Rachel was sitting up now, not even bothering to cover her body with the blanket. Her face was curious.
“It would appear, your highness, that the Chinese . . . crashed the CNC SDI program, then fired a low-level nuclear weapon at India.”
“A nucl . . . a nuclear weapon. From China. At India.” Gregory knew he was stammering. Rachel let out a tiny squeak, covering her mouth with her hand. “AFTER they crashed the SDI?”
“Affirmative, sir. The civilian death toll has been catastrophic, and the Indian Army is suffering in the land front.”
“My god,” Gregory repeated. Then he shook himself. “Assemble the staff. Fort Shafter, one hour. If I’m not there, brief them all fully, General. Get the commanders of the Fleets in on video communications.”
“Yes sir. And what protocols shall I engage?” Tompkins prodded.
Gregory paused. “Hawai’ian Sun, PHOENIX and Scarlet Fever. We’ll talk about the others once I’ve arrived. Make all due preparations.”
“Very well, your highness.” Tompkins said, before hanging up. Gregory put the phone down, still scattered.
“A nuclear bomb?” Rachel asked, her voice wavering. “That can’t be true.”
“It is,” Gregory confirmed. He held his head in his hands for a moment. Then he clenched his fists and rose to his feet. “China has invaded the Demon Realm and India, crashed the CNC SDI, and nuked India. Korea’s letting League elements into the Yellow Sea, and I’m going to do everything possible to force China to abandon its conquest of the Demon Realm. We’ve also initiated PHOENIX, Hawai’ian Sun and Scarlet Fever.”
“What we have to do,” Rachel murmured. She rolled out of bed, still naked, and embraced Gregory. “What we have to do. I’m scared of this new world.”
“So am I,” Gregory whispered. “But I’m not scared of Mr. George and China. And soon enough they will know the folly of attempting a war with a Hawai’ian.”
“I love you,” Rachel whispered, hugging him a little tighter. “Bring this to an end, somehow!”
“I will, my love,” Gregory promised. “I will. One way or another, I will.”
