The "OMG! Look what happened!" Thread

I just loaded up another one - but the game crashed before I could take a screenshot. -.- I was awfully surprised to find, upon spawning as America, that I seemed to have a border with Greater Japan to the south. They controlled Mexico, so I guess they got conquerors, DOWed on the English, and took over Savannah. Byzantium was still holding on without Constantinople (which had been recently captured by the French from the Turks), Russia was on the warpath in China, and France's capital was at Aix-la-Chapelle, near the center of their Europe-spanning empire.

Loaded up another one. It's not quite as strange as the others, but some interesting stuff happened nonetheless.

My inner Byzantinophile cries for joy.

The glorious colony of the Swedish East Indies.

Next turn: Holy Roman Korea?

Why does the AI find cities like Amsterdam AND Aken? Don't they suck enough already?

France probably founded Aix-la-Chapelle, which flipped to the Dutch.

Aachen is a great city...without Paris, Frankfurt, Copenhagen or Amsterdam.

Yet another 3000 BC American start. I'm on a roll tonight. I'm actually gonna play this one out and get into some crazy shenanigans.

Doesn't look like much. But the Mayans have yet to lose a city, have collapsed the Aztecs, and are still unvassalized around the time of the American spawn. I find that a little bit impressive.

Mongolia's bigger than I've seen it in a long time. They control the entirety of China, Korea, and a continuous swath of territory into Central Asia.

Where Maya and Mongolia were full of win, two other civs on the other side of the planet were, sadly, full of fail.

Never seen the Swedes/Vikings actually do anything with France. Sucks for our froggy friends, huh?

This does sort of beg the question of what happened to all those cities in Anatolia. But I think this is the first time I've seen Germany control territory in the Middle East, or a Spanish Constantinople.

Some turns later, I learned that Mongolia can, in fact, into India.

1: The quite alive Carthage.
2: Korea, which has no Korea.
3: Babylonia barely holding out.
4: Geneva with 7 Wonders.
5: Paris with the Kremlin and building the Manhattan Project.
6: Note that the USA hasn't spawned yet.

I like the fact that France is building the Manhattan Project and a knight at the same time.

@Gruekiller: That Mughal invasion of India is awesome, didn't think that's possible.

Started another one this morning, and I'm planning to play it into the Future Era. Right now it's 1918, and... well, I'll bring that up again a bit later.

I was amused to find, upon spawning, that the Russians were up to silly things in Africa again, this time in Tanzania.

ARAl5.jpg

Later on, it looks like they've given up on that. Ottoman rule extends into Africa as far as Mozambique.

I'm glad I caught this before the Russians took Vienna the next turn. I posted this because Vienna is the Germans' only city, and their borders here bear a striking resemblance to real life Austria. Note also Spanish Slovenia.

ASB!

At any rate, it's 1918 now. I was planning to go to all Barbary Wars on the Turks and seize Sicily, more to piss them off and weaken their naval hegemony in the Mediterranean, than anything else. Unfortunately, I failed to notice that the Ottoman Empire had a defensive pact with the USSR, the strongest of the three superpowers (myself and the Ottomans being the other two).

Luckily for me, I had defensive pacts with the English, Spanish, and French, who all came to my aid, as well as my longtime vassals Japan and Mali. Again, luckily, the Indian Maharajate had just collapsed after a century-long war with Russia, leaving its vassals Persia and Mongolia to deal with the Russians alone. They eagerly flocked under my protection once the war began.

So essentially, it's me (America) and my vassals (Japan, Mali, Persia, Mongolia), England, France (reluctantly; they were vassalized to the Turks not long ago, and aren't too happy to be a part of this war), and Spain (quickly losing stability; I'm afraid they'll probably collapse soon) as the Washington Pact against the Soviet Union and its vassals (Inca, Kampuchea, China) and the Ottoman Empire and its vassals (Netherlands, Arabia) as the Eurasian Alliance. Every nation on the planet is at war (except Portugal) and embroiled in the (first?) World War.

The landing force that triggered the war is marching through Sicily to take Vibo Valentia from the Turks. I've landed a substantially larger force near Oaxaca in Dutch Mexico (the former Mayan lands; the Aztec parts are under my control, since they belonged to Natives when I spawned - free land!) so I can seize the canal and send reinforcements to the Japanese and take the fight into China, Cambodia, and the Arab East Indies (!). The French will probably march into Dutch territory (or vice versa), the Spanish will probably do nothing, and the English might actually do something useful. I'm eager to see how long their enclave at Cairo can hold out against the rather imposing sight of Ottoman Africa.

That being said, wish me luck! Down with the godless communists and the treacherous Turk! Hail Columbia! Hail Jackson!

EDIT: After 18 years of unprecedented bloodshed, I'm proud to report that the First World War has ended in a decisive Washington Pact victory! In the opening weeks of the war, Fort Zeelandia was the first city to fall to Washington Pact forces as the Spanish drove the Dutch out of South America. Soon afterward, Vibo Valentia fell to American forces with heavy losses and the navy scored a critical victory near its naval base in the Azores. Japanese forces pushed the Arabs out of the southern Phillipines, and pushed into Korea, even as Spanish forces marched into Olximche and Quitu. Mongolian forces retook their ancient capital of Qara Qorum and American forces seized Huaxyacac and Chich'en Itza, removing the last Eurasian Alliance forces from North America. With Persian forces raising trouble in the Caucasus and American forces seizing the port at Nelkan (shortly thereafter ceding it to Mongolia), the USSR sued for peace, paying a hefty sum to the US. The turning point of the war is considered to be the epic battles at Vienna and Dirac. At the former, Spanish forces marched from Slovenia and, taking advantage of the Eyalet of the Netherlands' distraction with the French, seized Austria. At the latter, the Turkish city was burned to the ground, and the Ottomans were forced to pay the United States war reparations in the ensuing peace treaty.

In other words, I had fun. :D

Pretty odd coincidence. I had no idea that a simple Sicilian smackdown would result in a global conflict, to be perfectly honest... xD This war had its real roots in the American armed forces buildup up the 1880s and the tensions resulting over the war in India.

How is it that you get all these crazy starts? :(

Mine are all, England in it's normal area, China alive and flourishing, India alive 50%, Babylon dead, Persia either doing amazing or dead, etc... Not one start did I have that I would consider OMG.

@Gruekiller:
May I ask, is this DoC 1.7 (i.e. with Byzantines)? Because I've yet to see a game where Byzantium has succumbed to the Turks.

That's good to hear :)

There's a new version?!

Anyway, I had a game where Dutch took France :D. Finally, something interesting for me, I'll post a picture soon.

Edit: How do you take a picture.... my bad.

2nd Edit: I used the handy dandy search tool, my bad for forgetting.

Yeah, there is. Currently there's still a lot balancing to be done, but if your fine with being abused as a tester, you can start playing as Byzantium :)
