The "OMG! Look what happened!" Thread

The violation of Belgian independence was the reason for British involvement in WW1 (but they were bound by their alliances with France and Russia to go to war with the Central Powers anyway).

Sorry, but you have it backward. The German invasion of Belgium is what triggered British involvement in WW1. The German invasion of Poland drew Britain into WW2.

Well, someone needs a good history revision. :mischief:

Are you denying that Hitler was an evil man?

Of course not. Germany under his rule was one of the most evil countries ever. Still, it wasn't as evil as common knowledge thinks. But history is written by victors and both Allies and Soviet Union preferred to remember Hitler even more evil than he was just to look nice in comparison. That's why we have Stalin's leaderhead and not Hitler's. Personally I would prefer to live in Hitler's country than in Stalin's.

Even if you were Jewish? (which I assume you aren't)

But I have to agree with you. At least if you are 'Aryan' under Hitler's rule is better than under Stalin, but even then I would have to fight as a soldier (me being a young male) in a war which wasn't necessary. And I don't like to be a soldier.

I know, it's a little hypocritical that my favorite pass-time is ordering soldiers around in Civ-games... but some are leaders and some are fight-meat... ;)

I'd gladly take Stalin>Hitler

The difference is that Hitler became hated by his own people, as well as every country he fought against and all the people he oppressed.
But Stalin is revered as a hero in the country that he ruined.

Sorry, dude, but I think you have it backward. Hitler was well-liked by his people until his death, whereas Stalin was hated and feared even during his lifetime.

Nope. If I would be Jewish I would prefer to be in USSR. If I would be Russian I would prefer to be in USSR as well. Lets say there are 4 categories of people in those countries: elites, privileged people, common people and hated people. Elites had better in Germany (in USSR even Stalin was afraid), privileged people (for example Germans in Germany) had a lot better in Germany (still it wasn't good), common people (like Polish) had crappy situation in both countries, but Germans never did anything like Holodomor (which, depending on point of view was done either on "common" or on "privileged" group). The main fear of "common" class was to not fall to "hated". Still I would prefer to be in "hated" in Germany (unimaginable and terrible death with 3 weeks of tortures) than in USSR (unimaginable and terrible death in 10-20 years). But if I could choose between being "hated" in Germany and "privileged" in USSR choice is obvious.

Yep. The only difference is that Stalin has won.

Godwin's has more proof.
Anyone called anyone a nazist? We are not under Godwin's law now. Neither under rule of moderators. So freely we are creating offtopic. But "OMG! Look what happened!" fits to WWII :)

Stalin was hated and feared even during his lifetime.

Joseph Vissarionovich was pretty good at propaganda, too.

I would prefer being part of Stalin rule than of Hitler. At Hitler, if I was in a political disagreement, next day I wouldn't exist. At Stalin, if I was in political disagreement, next day I would be in a train heading to north Siberia in order to work 18 hours per day. At least, I would be alive.

And yes, this is a large off-topic going on, but np.

I'm talking about why they Hitler can't be in civ but Stalin can. Hitler is almost universally hated now, but at the moment I can quote "In a July 2007 poll 54 percent of the Russian youth agreed that Stalin did more good than bad while 46 percent (of them) disagreed that Stalin was a cruel tyrant"

And incidentally you would be in the very same camp where are people send to Siberia by you. And they know who you are. They will keep you alive as long as they can. Probably around 2 weeks. I remember one diary from Siberia where situation like that was written. The last sentence in the chapter was that in Rome people were eaten alive by lions. Now a lion was eaten alive by people.

Incans capture Hangzhou!

Seldom I see so big Khmer either (OK, China is your vassal and was nerfed in last patch).

If I knew that I would be tortured to the near point of death(or to death), I would rather of just been killed. Personally I'm glad to be an American for that.

I would rather be just killed than being killed by torturing too. But as easy as talking as an outsider is...

IN Soviet Russia lion doesn't eat you, you eat lion!

Tbh it was time someone made a Soviet Russia joke, I expected it earlier.
