Post Calamity History: Following the great calamity that befell the whole world much of what had been Venezuela had sunk beneath the waves leaving little but the mountainous highland regions for the Venezuelans to inhabit. Colombia also fared badly as a long section of the coastline also suffered terrible floods and lead to the collapse of the Colombian Government. Conditions were bad and a large proportion of those who had escaped the calamity dies of starvation and disease in the following months. Refugees flooded in from the coasts and living conditions for all were cramped and unhygienic. The warm and wet weather meant that disease could travel quickly and soon an unidentified fever broke out and spread amidst the population.
With conditions so bad and healthcare being spread so thinly the disease spread across the country like a plague killing thousands at every city. There was little that could be done and in many cities the citizens were so scared of the pestilence that they wouldn't even go near the bodies to bury them. This, as can be expected, only lead to further spread and the great piles of the dead outside every city continued to grow and grow until there seemed to be more dead than were alive. And those that were alive might as well have been dead; all the passion of Bolivar and the independence had vanished from their eyes, Gran Colombia might as well have been deserted.
It was into this world of ghosts and shadows that came Jose-Rafael Puan. He was a refugee from Cascaras who dreamed of a better future for his people. One that was free of the poverties of yesteryear and the oppression of days gone by. He wanted freedom and independence and at the same time a stable communal society to build it in. His radical ideas were similar to those of the now deceased Marx and Engels who had been killed following the great catastrophe.
He soon won support of what remained of the population and it was under his guidance that the new provisional government was set up. After a few months he also became key in drafting the Gran Colombian constitution proclaiming themselves as a free nation. That was in 1879.
Now as the year 1880 dawns the country is little better off with few resources and a small impoverished and disease ridden population. They have had no diplomatic contact with other nations and as of yet have no permanent contact established with anyone foreign dignitaries. As far as they know they are the only nation left on earth. The future is uncertain but it is hoped by all that they will prevail through their best efforts and their unquestioned faith in their leadership.
