Motte and Bailey: The most common type of castle way into the middle ages (maybe sth for size 3).

Examples for ancient / early medieval houses:

The best (i.e., most accurate) Norse set is this one by Hrafnkell, another norse historian. The walls are perfect, and the size 3 shows a good example of how an ancient to early medieval northern European city looked like.

A Kyriakos version of these would be my wet dream. ;)

And the best thing is: You could use the ancient cities for EVERY Germanic civ (Germans, Vikings, Dutch, and to some extent for celts and slavs like England, Poland).

Great pics, Ares :)

Some change, the towers in the Byzantine set are back to the generic ones i made. This happened because of continuity, since i am now using the same wooden walls for an ancient and a medieval set.

Some guys we know made this reconstruction of a 12th century hall, which would be perfect for a 2nd centerpiece:

Why not model this for the size one, then add two stave churches for size 2 and 3.

Also I agree with Shiro that the white rooves are not the best. Perhaps a gray?

Also those pics Ares posted of ancient Germanic, Scandinavian etc buildings are just what I need. That is, I need a set that can be used as an ancient north European set, celts, Germans etc.

These sets are great, I hope that soon I will be able to use only your sets for at least the first two eras.

Cheers,

Nick

I am going to need more pics of ancient nordic houses, and different ones too. At least two more :)

And what do you think about this longhouse model & the textures?

They don't really look different in that period. You can make different sizes, though.
Please note that the placement of nordic houses is different to the urbane look of eastern and mediterranean cities.

Continental Germanic (different walls):

I like it, but it shouldn't sit on a stone platform to be realistic. The model is outstanding, though. You could even make it a bit longer :)

The Japanese set has a stone stage too, so i will keep it to keep things uniform :)

And if i had made it a bit longer (i had at some time) it would look too thin at this size unfortunately.

Thanks for the pics, these should be more than enough.

You could just give the stone stage a grass texture, to make it look like a hill... Longhouses use partly dug in pillars and can't really be built on stone... besides, they weren't using large quantities of stones for buildings in that period. We were "barbarians", you know. ;)

I love that new roof texture, not sure if the temple? looks like it belongs. It would be interesting to see the main building sitting on a grass texture it would evoke how many European cultures built in that period......instead of the temple building maybe just a few stone pillars or a corral.

I know that it is not historically correct, but the jap set has a stone stage too and it is wooden. So i am keeping it for this too :/

I changed one of the houses to something a thousant times better:
