The price of fandom is hard to swallow

As I've mentioned previously, and as can be seen by my (yet another) new avatar, Inu-Yasha has become a recent interest of mine. Apparently this whole "anime" thing is rather popular in these parts ;), but I didn't really know much about it.

The thing is that I don't have a lot of "spending money" to throw around, and the Inu-Yasha manga books and anime DVDs are pretty expensive to my tastes. But yet again, I find myself returning to viz.com, my local bookstore, or wherever to quench my thirst for these over-priced products and towing the line of capitalism.

$9 would be cheap for a book, if it didn't take me less than an hour to read it .

So, what categories do you find yourself paying more than you should because of the prestigious world of "fandom"?

These days, none... althouth I once had a fine collection of heavy metal T Shirts that cost the equivalent of $20 each.

ermmm...computer games....CDs.....books.....you name it, I'm paying over the top

I used to buy a lot of chess books, I still have them, if I read and studied them all on a daily basis I could probably become a Master (rated 2100 or above) but I just don't have the passion for it.

@ Toasty: Netflix. THE greatest way to watch series that are old enough to be on DVD. Seriously, I watched all of Cowboy Bebop this way, and am currently watching all of Trigun and Monty Python as well. (If you want the specifics, its $20 a month for unlimited DVDs, the only catch is that you can only have 3 out at a time, but you keep them as long as you want.)

Any prices I have paid for fandom? Um...none really. Purchasing CDs and books is a pleasure, not a hassle, for me.

I've been spending a lot of money/time of wakeboard paraphanalia lately... it's slowly becoming an obsession (and not a cheap one!)

Ugh. I wish I had the cash again for almost everything I've bought as a collectable. I've been caught-up in it since I was seven, and only got it under control in my mid to late 20s.

A few years ago, when Pokemon was very popular with kids my age (11 or so at the time), I resisted it for a while, then the evil pocket monsters took all my sensibility away from me, and I wasted (or my parents wasted ;)) a lot of money on the cards. Actually, I shouldn't say wasted, since it was pretty fun.

I played Pokemon too, but i sold mine :D
Yeah, I should have, but I never got around to doing it. And by the time I got bored of them, they weren't worth much anyway.

Same here. I used to play at a club in my childhood, but now only occasionally vs. friends or on the Internet. But here in Germany chess books don't sell anymore, so I often saw books at "nice price". I just can't stand, I just buy them! Even if they are are far beyond/below my level. And of course I don't have the time/passion to work them through (You can't just read a chessbook)

I'm the kind of guy that goes through the bargain bins in stores to find books, CDs and games that I like at a low price. Recently I've bought nice books for €2 - €3 and CDs for €7 - €8. Reasonable prices I think. So although I buy a lot I don't spend that much. :D

Did I mention I have the entire (up to now) 30 vols of the Inuyasha manga? :mischief:

Only anime and manga stuff I think - except maybe for the occasional computer part. I buy 8-10 new manga vols each weekend. Also recently, an entire DVD set of an anime I wanted to (re)watch.

But then, I can afford it pretty well. :p

I spent a lot on my "fandom" intrests...:(

Pokemon, which I no longer play (thank the Gods)...I think I spent around $700 dolars total.

Yu-Gi-Oh! ... I've spent around $1500

Dungeons and Dragons ... around $400

Magic: The Gathering ... Just about $40. I've got one deck, and it's OK.

Games (PS2, PC, Gameboy, etc..) ... Around $800

The funny thing is, I've bought over half this stuff by my self and I almost never mooch off my mom and dad. I also don't even have a real job...

Wonder how that works?

Well, it's quote simple. I do stuff for both my grandmother and my parents for money...about $7 dollars an hour for my mom and dad and $5 an hour for my grandma.

Average Month for Xeven:

$5 x 4 Hours x 8 Days = $160 a month from grandma
$7 x 2 Hours x 4 Days = $72 a month from my mom and dad

160 + 72 = $232 a month

Year

$232 x 12 months = $2784 - Gaming Expenses (Food, Electricity, Contest Fees, Clean-Up Fees, etc...)

So, I make about $2000 a year.

Toasty - Check out netflix, like TripleStripe said. We used to use it, and it was pretty cool.

I don't have a lot of money for extravagances(sp?), but I guess I do overpay for some resturants. We like to go to Chili's or Applebee's. Especailly for Chili's Chips and Salsa. . . Yum! But we end up getting steaks and ribs when we should be eating salads or hamburgers. And I do love their 7 buck hamburgers. . . I do just as good at home, and get a lot more meat for 7 bucks at the grocery store.

I used to buy all the Star Trek novels when I was a kid. I didn't have a lot of money, and shelling out three bucks for a novel was a big deal twenty years ago. I also used to have to have the newer games. Nowaday's, I wait until my b-day, or it's on sale at walmart and I can get a couple of them for $20.

Buckethead CD's...I just can't help myself. :D
