The Quest for Culture (QfC) - An ex-n00b Production

Hi folks,

I have good news and bad news. I'll start with the bad news:

Bad News
I got a new CD/DVD burner today and took it home, put it in the machine and the machine is now dead! That's right, dead! :aargh: Power supply has died and I also think the motherboard has been spiked. Excellent, just bloody excellent. I had the saves on there and everything... It seems now my plan for building another machine has been realised. Unfortunately, these things usually happen at the worst time as I really don't have the funds to build and build a new computer - that's another story. I must admit, that power supply was 5 years old so it has had a good life and it has been having a few problems over the last few months so it was just a matter of time.

Good News
If you look below, the saves are attached... However, I am out a machine for I'd say at least a week (I have come to work on a saturday to get some information off the HDDs - including the saves). So I am here to pass the saves on to whomever would like to take over. I don't want to exit this game and would still love to play however if someone could put me as M.I.A on the roster, that would be fantastic. I will still lurk this thread and post if able whilst at work and I'll let you know when I can play again (from home :))... Obviously, the corresponding save name of each file is the name of the screenshot in my first post. Good Luck to whomever starts on whichever save. On that note, I am still undecided personally as to what save we should start with. AK made a great argument for Save 3 which I cannot ignore.

Hopefully I'll be able to source some components shortly (I'll put an order in this afternoon actually) and with any luck, the machine will be built by the end of this coming week - I'm looking forward to it actually. I'll be able to play Civ4 on Huge Maps! [pimp] Good Luck Team. I'll be visiting on Monday when I really should be here - coming to work on a saturday is just crazy! That's Sunday for the U.S and Europe timezones...

We can just skip you this go - given how long we collectively seem to take wittering before we play I think you'll likely be back before we get back to you ;) I mean we've not even quite decided which save to go for yet :crazyeye:

So far I think we've got the following opinions:

Sadan - being persuaded by AK to go for 3 rather than 1
Beef - prefers 1
Pling - 1 or 3
Chriseay - 1 or 3
Admiral Kutzov - prefers 3

3 seems to be edging out 1, and nobody wants any of the others. Anyone any more comments/thoughts/arguements/bribes/whatever? :mischief:

Techwise everyone who's expressed an opinion seems in favour of Poly-Masonry-Mono to start. AK suggested Oracle->CS which I guess we'd need to focus on instead of many worker techs? It'd need Med-Priesthood-Writing-CoL to pull off before the AI gets there, but it would be good if we could get it :) ... but we can make that decision a little later in the game?

but we can make that decision a little later in the game?

not really you almost have to start right from the get go

if you're worried about the workers having nothing to do - get pottery and bw and they'll have plenty to do. once we get CS, we can backfill as appropriate

OK, so we'd be talking about a tech path of: Poly-Masonry-Mono-BronzeW?-Pottery?-Med-Priest-Writing-CoL Then backfill for the other worker techs?

Hmm, I ought to subscribe to this really :) Sorry to hear about your PC Sadan - hope you can scrape another one together soon!

i'll start, if we get some agreement on the tech path.

i was thinking poly, mono, BW, pottery, med, priest and then pause for a breath to discuss.

Should we each go 30 turns for the first set?

I think 30 is good since this is an epic game. It is epic, right?

That tech path looks ok to me, only thing we'll need to throw in masonry before mono, as it is a prereq. I'm pretty sure it isn't optional, but I could be wrong.

You're correct. Of course, just clicking on Monotheism will fill it in for you :)

I'll have to be skipped for this game, possibly for some time - my graphics card's just died on me :( I doubt I'll be replacing it with anything capable of running Civ 4 for a while; I'll probably get a cheap one to tide me over and upgrade to a new motherboard at the same time when I get chance. I'll be checking in to see how you're getting on, though.

Sorry to hear that Beef. What's happening here? Is this game possessed or something? I know that a Ti4600 runs Civ4 ok (up to a standard map) and if they are still available from some "budget" computer shops where you are, that will tide you over (an FX5200 or above will do fine too).

I'm still waiting on components to arrive. I don't think I'll get anything until Thursday/Friday at the earliest - although I wish it was arriving today.

I'd better go. I'm at work and getting dirty looks from people here. :(

That's too bad Beef. It's no fun to have to replace hardware. :(

@Sadan: Waiting for components to arrive is never fun. I ended up taking the plunge and building myself a desktop when I realized neither my old (I mean old) desktop nor my newish laptop would run Civ well. It was not fun waiting a week to get all the components in.

Oh dear god no. Don't tempt fate like that, Sadan! :mischief:

Sorry to hear your graphics card went bang, Beef - I'd offer you a spare, but I think the only one that's even possibly up to Civ4 that's not in use has a few blades missing off the cooling fan, so I don't think that'd be wise ;)

hey guys sorry about the hardware. work was rough today, so I'll go with save 3 tomorrow and try to get at least ten done.

I know exactly what you mean. I ordered the components last saturday (when I made my post about my old machine dying) and at this stage, I am waiting on just one - video card... everything else is ready to be sent out (but they will only send out once all components have arrived). Oh well, there isnt much I can do with a system without a video card and my older system has an AGP-Ti4600 in it...

Building, instead of getting a shop etc to build for you, is certainly the way to go. Much, much cheaper.

Pling, why not tempt fate? :mischief: Why is it that both Beef and myself have had hardware components fail? In a matter of a couple of days of each other? And look now, AK has had a rough day at work! He never has rough days at work (I think)... Chriseay is stacking the deck... Chriseay is playing in every single SG on the CivFanatics forums... I'm a conical flask.. :science: Geez, where does it end? Something is happening here... (you can finish that sentence off).

Ok, I'm off to take a valium :D: and have some lunch... I've had my fun. Seriously now, Good Luck AK! :)

Here we go. 30 in the bag.

Turn 0 (4000 BC)
AK: Here we go. Rename the warrior to Whomp. He moves NE.
AK: And already I have to make a decision. Move NE for the stone or stick with the plan?

AK: Stick with the original plan. I don't like the useless desert if I go NE.

Yay! We're off :) Good turns, AK ... dot map looks good to me, too :) I know what you mean about Bronze - makes me a bit twitchy too if I don't know where any of the metals are after 30 turns! But religions are better in this case :crazyeye:

We don't, precisely, have an organised roster yet, do we? Guess it depends if Chriseay has a preference for when he plays, given he's in every game he could get into ;) How about:

BeefontheBone (Skip till he has a shiny new graphics card to make us all jealous)
AK (Just played)
Chriseay (Up!)
Pling (On deck)
Sadan (Skip till he's got a shiny new PC to make us all jealous)

Yeah that's fine for me. I'll play this evening. How many turns are we doing, 30?

And I promise, I'll try to find that bronze....remember though, this is epic, so 30 turns isn't quite as many as it feels like. I believe epic is 1.5 times normal, making this roughly equivalent to 20 turns. I usually don't find metal till much later....I tend to prefer to hook up my resources and possibly find religion first. :crazyeye:

30 each for the first round sounds good to me. After that we should maybe think about if we're going to drop straight to 10 each or not.
