I haven't played the third game, but I played the first and second. From what I understand it's not meant to be accurate, but based on how someone from the 1950s would see it.

Cant remember what the application was but there is an outside chance small particles could have aspestosis (sp?) like effects. Thats real-world applications, if we are talking sci-fi then it's the grey goo scenario.
