With RPG (roleplaying games) mechanics in mind:

What should the probability of success be for a average skilled player faced with an average difficulty task?

Should it be 50-50? My gut feeling tells me that 50-50 is too obvious of an answer, but I could be over analyzing it.

Okay, that is closer to what I was thinking. 80% seems a little high to me, I might compromise and consider 75%.

I wouldn't consider washing the dishes to be an average difficulty task though.

And I just realized that I haven't thought about it enough to even know what I would consider an "average" difficulty task. I need to think about it some more.

I hate asking questions, just to realize I haven't thought about them enough myself.

Yeah, this too. I meant more like "the plates broke because you were too rough with them" as compared to "you failed to completely clean the plates".

Yup.

It is a feeling of epic failure when despite having a machine do the washing up for you - indeed a machine that is better able than you to remember if you have filled the salt and rinseaid recently - you have still failed at a task that is the by word for something that requires no responsibility and even a fool could do. I guess it is what actually failing to find your arse with both hands would feel like.
