The weed is fake. It doesn't work. I have a friend who tried the Hawaiian Haze. He said it was like smoking dirt and it didn't do anything except make him feel nauseous. Save your money and buy real weed.

Gotcha. Thanks for the tip.

Has anyone gotten the swine flu vaccine? I was considering since their giving it for free, but I don't want to get sick since its exam week soon. How long were you sick for after the vaccine?

Moths. When it's light they hide in the dark. When it's dark they come up and go apeskip over lights.

What's up with moths? Why don't they just get up in the morning and have all the lights they want.

I had swine flu instead. I recommend the vaccine if you can get it.

I on the other hand recommend getting swine flu as long as you are in good health. It is much more mild than the normal flu and you don't have an 8% chance of nerve damage like you do with the vaccine.

The increased risk of Guillain-Barre is apparently much more like 0.001% and is only a possible outcome, since the data come from a US programme using a different vaccine 30 years ago.

Moths are stupid. God clearly wants them to die, if they're attracted to flames. Idiotic creatures.

The explanations that I have heard are that moths navigate by the moon. Normally the moon is the only significant light source around, and thus they fly towards it. When you have a flame of light bulb, the moths fly towards it because they confuse it with the moon.

I'm not sure about this though, so don't quote me on it.

That wouldn't really explain why they're also attracted to flames, nor why they fly towards the light, rather than just using it for navigatory purposes.

According to wikipedia
Moths frequently appear to circle artificial lights, although the reason for this behavior remains unknown. One hypothesis advanced to explain this behavior is that moths use a technique of celestial navigation called transverse orientation. By maintaining a constant angular relationship to a bright celestial light, such as the Moon, they can fly in a straight line. Celestial objects are so far away, that even after travelling great distances, the change in angle between the moth and the light source is negligible; further, the moon will always be in the upper part of the visual field or on the horizon. When a moth encounters a much closer artificial light and uses it for navigation, the angle changes noticeably after only a short distance, in addition to being often below the horizon. The moth instinctively attempts to correct by turning toward the light, causing airborne moths to come plummeting downwards, and - at close range - which results in a spiral flight path that gets closer and closer to the light source.

That does make sense, thanks. Reminds me of a factoid I heard somewhere that bees always know where the sun is and predict the path across the sky when 'explaining' the way to get to honey to other bees.

After a bit of googling: When a honeybee scout finds food, she uses two known tools to understand where it is. One is her solar compass, which lets her remember where things are in relation to the sun. The bee's ability to see polarized light lets her determine where the sun is regardless of whether it is obscured by clouds. The other tool is her internal clock, which lets her keep track of how far she has flown. Her internal clock also lets her determine of how much the sun moves during her journey. In other words, when she returns to the hive, she can tell her sisters exactly where the food is in relation to the current position of the sun, not the position of the sun when she found the food. As a bee matures, she also learns about how the sun's path across the sky changes during different seasons of the year and at different latitudes if her hive is moved. She can incorporate these changes into her measurements.

Much smarter than a moth. Moths! Pffft!

Yeah, but moths aren't getting wiped out by fungi/viruses/other unknown disorders :(

And no, we don't know better. We don't have more information to prevent such instances. We don't have better testing methods. Nope. Nuh-uh.

How did the water game "Marco Polo" get its name? Obviously it is related to the great explorer, but why name a variant of hide-and-go-seek after him?

Because he wandered around a lot, which is what you're required to do in the game?

seeds should be legal anyway?

Oh, it should all be legal, but that is a discussion worth its own thread and therefore not worthy of discussion here.

How many angels can dance on the head of a pin? :D

Better yet: how many potatoes does it take to kill an Irishman? None.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled thread: questions not worth their own thread. We apologise for the inconvenience. Those in charge of the latest posts have been sacked.

A moose bit my sister once....
