The Realms Beyond - Succession Game Discussions

I tried the "no tech-trading" option, it lowers the difficulty with at least one level.

This is a moving target. The more civs in the game, the more gain for the player to run No Tech Trading. I do plan to run this.

And yes, I'm all too aware of the Pillage-n-Park loophole, that it's still in there, etc. I can't discuss it vis-a-vis Civ4 except to say that it's a Known Issue.

We will, by choice, not be executing Pillage-n-Park, although we might make some early aggressive moves. If we go down in flames, then we go down in flames fighting to the last unit.

oh the turn reports are REAL fun to write up when you have 30 + opposing units about to attack you hahahahaha

Can only imagine they are only more fun to read.

Cheers!

Hi,

I don't think a no military game is viable in Civ4.

I think the AI is too smart in Civ4 for a civ to even survive with no military units.
Uh...okay, so I got curious and wanted to find out how such a crazy, no military game would go. After a total playing time of 1 hour and 44 minutes, I had my answer. :crazyeye:

If you're interested about how it went, you can read my report about it here.

What if you did the same but had always peace on. Could you still win by outteching for diplo?

Realize that unlike All War, Aways Peace affects everyone, including the AI's. In truth there is no reason to build military in an Always Peace game, except maybe as MP.

@ Kylearan---Excellent Game:goodjob: :goodjob:

I was thinking of starting one of two SG's, either a Great Person farming type or a Corrupt Government type where we must whip as much as possible. Would there be interest in either?

What happens if you put as many players as possible on a map? Does the Starting Location algorithm do strange things? I'd like to know before I start an overloaded SG.

Depends.

In all cases, the game will crowd them in there.

Eighteen civs on a Duel map with Inland Sea will have them all starting a couple of plots apart. (Don't pick a civ that starts with Hunting!)

Highlands Standard or Large with 18 will end up with some areas packed like sardines, some civs pushed in to corners and niches, and some lucky civs having breathing room.

Archipelago with Tiny Islands on Large or Huge would actually be playable and reasonably fair. Terra or Pangaea or Custom Continents can all easily handle 18 civs on Large or Huge.

If you play Huge with 18, in most cases it will work out OK. Cramming them in to smaller and smaller maps will have some negative effects, but some of those could be fun.

I'll put it off for later, then. For now, I propose:

Cutting Edge
Obsolete is so yesterday.

Variant Rules:
1. No obsolete units. If you have any units you can upgrade, you must run 100% wealth until they're all upgraded or removed.
2. Newer is better. When you discover a new Civic, you must switch to it and keep it until a newer, better Civic replaces it.

Details:
Standard-sized temperate Inland Sea map.
Monarch difficulty
American Empire
George Washington

Slots:
Mike Lemmer
Zalson
Qwack

Starting location:

Who wants in?

I'd prefer a spiritual civ, or you're going to waste too many turns in anarchy, which ain't much fun. I like the units idea, I anticipate that Civ V will feature units who do not live longer than Methuselah...

A Spiritual civ would make the game too easy and be deprived of its greatest asset (quickly switching back & forth). Besides, since when are Spiritualistic civs techno materialists?

Heya, I would love to join your game Mike Lemmer. 1 Question though.. How do you decide which civic is "better"? I mean when I say better, better depends on the playstyle. For me I wouldnt always consider Police State better than Representation or universal Suffrage. I wouldnt consider Nationhood being better than free speech either. But I generally get police state and nationhood last, so they will be the newest. Are we just going to switch to a new civic when the option appears.. no matter what?

Btw, the variant seems interesting so ill join :). Also if possible, I would prefer to be in the third or fourth slot rather than the second :P. Just so I dont make any stupid mistakes at the start of the game.

Well, if its too easy, play Emperor. Unless we get TMcC to join, its no fun spending the whole game in anarchy!

I think the point was that newer = better - basically, you have to move down the columns if possible (presumably you didn't intend to be able to research them in a weird order in order to end up where you want). Could be fun, but I suspect you'll end up with relatively small military or falling a long way behind on tech.

I wouldn't call 20 turns the whole game. Besides, there are three pairs of Civics learned simultaneously (17 turns) and three civics in the end game you can skip the techs for (14 turns). That means we'll only be in anarchy for 3-4% of the game. If we wanted stability, we wouldn't be first adopters.

Concerning civics:

Newer, better civics are determined by the order we discover them in. If we learn Slavery after Caste System, we switch to Slavery.
