http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=239376 - Axe Rush/Spy
So as I wrap up my Monarch Wonderspam thread (I've gone into super-detailed writeups, practically turn-by-turn) and as I end my EE (ok so it's more like Axe-Rush Spy Gambit), I was thinking about safer strats.
I wasn't necessarily gonna rush in the Axe/spy game, but with copper so near, I couldn't resist.
What if there were no copper?
What makes for an all-around, more or less safe strategy regardless of map type?
I thought.. hmm I've won many Emperor games as Willem and Napolean, though any org or fin leader works. I did it by REXing and then paying for it later, with the maintenance blow cushioned by org or fin. How about combining everything and doing a REX, while sending a spy, and then rushing someone when I get caught up in the tech race a bit?
So I rolled a start (Willem van Oranje [Creative, Financial]/Fractal/Normal/Standard but low sea level--I like larger maps but my computer chokes on them so I go standard size map and low sea levels--with default everything except Agg AI).
And got.. marble in fat cross. LMAO. I was all prepared to skip most of the early wonders like I did in many of my other games on Emperor as Willem, but guess I will go for marble stuff in this game. Usually as Willem on Emperor I war just once early and then go dormant and explode after getting Dikes. But I've never played Agg AI until my last few games, so let's see if I can stay out of trouble for long.
I played out the start through to roughly the time of Bureaucracy. It's been a weird game so far as Wang Kon managed to circumnavigate the world around the time of Alphabet or so. I screwed up somewhat on the whole spying thing because I was trying to infiltrate tech leader Izzy but she was nowhere to be found, ugh. I also juuuust missed out on 2 cities so it's not even as much of a REX game as I intended, but whatever, I took a barb town early, so maybe it evens out.
If there is interest, I will post a less-detailed-than-Wonderspam-thread summary of what happened so far. If there is a lot of interest, we can even play several turns per set, with reader input, ALC-style.
