Now this right here is some serious stuff, and shows a change in the pentagons policey in fighting insurgents. Many of you guys and gals, includeing myself, are too young to remember what went down in central america in the early 80's, lets just say it wasen't pretty.

Counter-Insurgency never is.

Here is the basics of what the plan is all about for Iraq.

One - US SOF will begin to train select iraqis in various methods of low intensity warfare. These operations have been going on for thousands of years and is some ulgy stuff. Assassinations, kidnappings and the like to target insurgents and terrorists. The iraqs to be trained are of the more reliable kind, Kurds and Shia along with some select Sunni splinter groups.

Two - They let the dogs loose in hot areas, were these teams of iraqis working with americans will begin to actively hunt down and... " deal with " these insurgents, there supporters and there supply routes. Things like ambushing the ambushers, taking them out of there own homes in the middle of the night, and generaly terrorizeing the terrorists.

This has been done by US/UK forces in the past in places like...

Vietnam - See the preformance of US Navy SEALs in the mekong delta, aka " The men with green faces " as the VC/NVA called them. They were so successful in there operations and this style of warefare the enemy had to change tactis and find new supply routes.

Burma - The SAS spent a long time in Burma and pretty much wrote the book on counter insurgency operations, recruiting local fighters and working in small teams to hunt down the enemy with amazing efficency.

El Salvador - This place was pure hell in the early 80's, both sides killing with disregard for lives of non combatants. Some would say this was the fault of the CIA but it's rather intresting, many of the worst massacers happened before the US really stepped up involvement. Like the group of nuns found in a mass grave.

What do you think of this option?

I'm all for it, there will be less non combatant deaths from the lack of tanks and aircraft used by these forces, and more of an effort to devlope and use local sources of intelligance. Granted this kind of war is more in your face and personal for the people fighting it. There will be little mercy involved for both sides and some things can happen to make many people blink in shock. Then again... if you can terrorize the terrorists, go for it. :goodjob:
