The "secret unit"

I seriously considered it, but in the end I thought that would be pretty mean ;)

Hey I've gotta respect the forum rules!

Yes it would be like the filmaker for the Joaquin Phoenix documentary telling us after the movie is released it was all a hoax. We would have been p'd off.

While I was watching the Gamespot stream tonight, there was a lot of focus on how fascinating it is to use the GDR as a weapon of mass destruction, essentially. But I was wondering what a player would have to do if faced with a GDR. Would he have to use a nuke to stop it, or would he just have to make good, tactical use of the terrain? I just can't believe that, if faced with an army of GDRs, the player would be forced to throw up his hands and concede defeat.

Modern Armor, Rocket Artillery, and Bombers are much cheaper than GDRs. If you have an army roughly equivalent in hammer cost, you can bomb it from a distance and, as it gets closer, bombard it with rocket artillery. I'd actually suggest using some Mech Inf to block its path so it only moves one hex a turn (especially if you can be on a hill or use a choke point). Then send in as much Modern Armor as you have until it dies.

Ironically, this might be the modern equivalent of a turtle strategy, but it still should be a decent counter.

The snake was easy to kill if you used mind blast (Barrett's second limit break) on it and shoved people on the back row. Once you've eliminated its MP, you're safe from beta.

But the whole point of fighting him early is to get Beta... Which is not the hard with Fire Ring and Elemental + Fire... Then cast Bio on him. If a remember correctly, you could "choose" which party member he would through out of the battle by inflicting the most damage with that guy.

Back to topic: I thought they said that you had to unlock the unit by playing in a very specific way...

From the Civ 5 manual:

Giant Death Robot: 150 str, 1000 hammers
Modern Armor: 80 str, 700 hammers

The GDR boasts 0,15 str/hammer while the str/hammer ratio of another modern unit, the modern armor, is only 0,11. I know that more technologically advanced units are supposed to sport a higher strength but if the GDR is implemented in its current state, there would be virtually no point in building anything else besides GDRs.

If the developers were to expand the tech tree into the future era (which I don't necessarily want to see) some new units should definitely be added to counter the GDR. I don't want to see all of the end game battlefields dominated by a single unit with a silly name. I'm probably giving Civ 5 a week or two to see if it's balanced out.

So can we give a spearman the anti-tank promotion? 'cus that would be cool in fact.

e: or the anti-GDR promotion.

I agree that the future era needs more units in total, and it definitely needs something to counter that stupid GDR. Also the GDR really needs a new name since the current one blows.

The GDR boasts 0,15 str/hammer while the str/hammer ratio of another modern unit, the modern armor, is only 0,11.

GDR is 1 movement slower than modern armor and has penalty against cities. Plus it consumes Uranium and competes with nukes and nuclear plans here.

No problems here.

I don't know, that sounds like it might have been pretty hilarious. :)

Not only hilarious, but stupid! How can you say for something that it's a secret, if you know that everybody know for it? WTH???!!!!??!?!?!?!:eek::eek:

LOL thanks greg and john for putting the GDR in the game...

GDR > nukes

anyways for the haters you can just skip this...

Even though Greg said it, are we really sure that the GDR is the secret unit?

The previous info we said that the secret unit wouldnt appear in the unit listings, but the GDR does.

This thread could just be a red herring, meant to decieve us all!

Would be cool if the expansion added a future era.

One thing I don't want to see is giant LEGGED robots - can anyone tell my why legs would be superior to what we already use?

Legs can theoretically traverse more rugged terrain, if the robotics are sophisticated enough to handle balance the same way a human or animal can. currently, there is no robot that can. Even Asimo falls over sometimes when going up stairs.

I'm going to continue to pretend that its Sephiroth. And I will not stop playing Civilization V until I find out how to unlock Sephiroth! ... And even then I'll keep playing because I'll want to play as Sephiroth.

That or a Giant Death Gandhi. GDG > GDR.

I will pay for a "giant death Gandhi" xDDDD
