Yes, Popcorn will be very useful in OT stories, Succesion games, NES and lurking in general. It could also be used in sports after a very good game or something!

The only problem with gifs like

is that the poster needs to be sure to go back and *remove* it when it is no longer applicable.

When I started my new job this spring, their online "Programmers Manual" had "NEW" and "UPDATED" gifs sprinkled in it that were up to two years old!

One one of my websites, I use a bit of JavaScript to set the "updated" icons to expire and disappear by themselves.

I doubt that's practical for a smiley though.

If the updated tag is very useful for a week or so, why does it matter if it stays? The "last updated" tag at the bottom will reveal the date of the change.

I dunno about legally, but a lot of people use external smileys as they would any other image. I don't think CFC has rules against that.
