Let's see how well ya'll CivFanatics (or Off-Topic Fanatics) know your Russian/Soviet planes/ships/missiles/etc. You may or may not know more than me; I make no claim of getting a 100% on the Soviet Threat Test in OCS (like my dad), but I know my fair share of 'stuff'. Ya'll know the drill. Whoever answers the question correctly asks the next question. Use pictures or anything else you want. I'll start you off with an easy one:

(category: NATO name designations)

If I knew nothing about the Tu-142 'Bear', but I knew about NATO name designations, how would I immediately know that the Tu-142 'Bear' was a propeller driven bomber? (This question has two parts.)

Because you just saw it unload on your head?

Well, "Bear" begins with a B... so does Backfire... so you'd know it was a bomber from that. (Also Badger).

How you would know it was propeller driven (strictly speaking turbine driven) is beyond me.

EDIT: Part of the reason for Nato sigs is that the average squaddie doesn't care about who made a weapon or what number it is, just what it can do... compare the following.

Officer1: "Incoming Mikoyan-Guerivich 23 Version S! Take cover"

Officer2: "Flogger inbound!"

Well, CruddyLeper got one half of the question and joycem10 the other. Either of you can post the next one (whoever shows up first).

Since I guess its my question...

Name the NATO designation for the Soviet Sub that, at the time of its initial trials, was believed to be the fastest and deepest diving sub in existance; causing the US to reevaluate its anti-submarine torps and begin work (later cancelled after more intel on the sov sub's capabilities) on the ADCAP torp.

Alfa Class. Fast as hell noisier than a volcano :p

Akula?

ten ten

My Question then.

Which Soviet MBT Type was never exported outside the USSR or subsequently and why?

It was the T 80. They considered it too advanced for the allies.

Adler

My apologies. I should have phrased my question better I have now edited it

T-44?, i don't think i ever seen anyone using them, why, i don't know.

T-64. It was too expensive to be built in large quantities so it was never exported. The T-72 was developed for that purpouse instead.

Mikoyan is correct. The T-64 (in service from 1970) was actually a far more capable and well-armoured MBT than the slightly later T-72 but its horrific price (and the fact its ceramic laminate armour was initially highly classified) meant that only Soviet units were ever issued the thing.

The T-64 equipped the elite armoured formations of the Soviet Army based in East Germany by the way.

Your question I believe Mikoyan
