The Soviet/Russian Military Quiz

Gelion, Im not sure if there has been a change in the Russian organizational structure since the end of the CCCP. The list I was working from includes 4 of the units that you mentioned above:

Ground Forces
Naval Forces
Air Forces
Strategic Rocket Forces

EDIT:
After a quick check it appears that the final unit which I referenced was merged with the Air Forces in 1998 in a reorganization of the Russian military

Here's what I found in CIA world factbook:

"Ground Forces, Navy, Air Forces; Airborne troops, Strategic Rocket Forces, and Military Space Forces are classified as independent combat arms, not subordinate to any of the three branches."

I think these guys know what they are talking about... even though I never heard of it before.

Gelion: I think your info is on the current Russian military not the former Soviet military. My info comes from Jane's and Sovietarmy.com.

The last branch I was referring to was the Strategic Air Defense Forces or Voyska PVO. It was tasked with air defense agaoinst SAC bombers and like I said above, was merged with the Air Forces in 1998 when the Russian military was reorganized.

Next question is Gelion's.

Easy one:

Name the national day of the Russian army (inc. date) and say why it emerged as a national holiday (both significant parts).
