The Sumerian Empire

Sima Qian, your story is good, I've read every chapter when you post them, but I haven't commented much. Continue it, don't worry about lurkers :)
I like stories with good starting idea, not just to send huge amount of troops and conquer world, because Civilization is strategy game, not just killing and destroying game like Quake or Doom ;)

Yup hes got a point there and we are way onto the far hills of off-topic land here. Sorry takeo, waiting for an update. :D

ditto... would like to see more from Takeo too :)

Thanks for the support, everyone!
Don't get much time in the middle of the week to update, but we'll see. Most of my gameplaying and updating is around the weekend. Most.;)

...and there will definately be some warmongering coming up.:hammer:

1150 B.C.
Foreign Advisor- Your Majesty, a group of warriors from the far-off land of Egypt, have appeared on the outskirts of Kish. They announced that their leader will soon be arriving.
s30-egypt_warriors.JPG

Cleopatra-Queen of Egypt, arrives with her royal entourage and many bodyguards. They are all ushered in for an audience with King Gudea. During the meeting, Gudea is dazzled by all the glitz, pageantry and especially Cleopatra's beauty.
s31-meet_cleo.JPG

After her departure, Gudea is thinking of how stunning Cleopatra was in her headress, as the military advisor steps forward.
King Gudea- I know what you are going to say- the Egyptians have a powerful military. Hearing that is getting very old!

1100 B.C.
King Gudea and Gilgamesh were taste-testing some wine, freshly shipped from Lagash, when the foreign and science advisors rushed into the room.
s31b-SA_talks.jpg

Foreign Advisor- We could offer up our contact with nations to our east for Babylon's contact with nations to their south. Hammurabi may throw in their new Writing system with the deal.

Gudea grimaced, he dreaded having to talk to Hammurabi and his superior attitude. The foreign advisor sets up a meeting between the two, and the Babylonian leader soon agrees to a deal.
s32-trade_4_writing.JPG

The acquisition of new contacts and the ability to set up communications between other nations has touched off a frenzy of trading.
>Egypt- Cleopatra trades Mysticism + contact:Greece for Writing + contact:Carthage.
>Hittites- Mursilis gives up Ironworking + 75 gold for Mysticism, Writing + contact:Carthage, Byzantines.
>Byzantines- Theodora gives contact:Zulu + 77 gold for Writing + contact:Romans.
>Greece- Alexander willingly trades contact:Persia + 73 gold for Alphabet.
>Zululand- Shaka drops off 473 gold + Byzantine worker for Alphabet, Masonry, Pottery, Ceremonial Burial and the Wheel.

Once again, Gudea meets with a world leader that thinks very highly of himself.
s33-meet_persia.JPG

Gudea laughed to himself; the ego of some of these leaders was astounding! He pondered how satisfying it will be, to knock some of them off their pedestals.

With Writing having been acquired, a new direction of research needs to be made.
s34-research_math.JPG

King Gudea- I agree, and the level of your funding will be increased.
(Mathematics @ 80% in 16 turns)

Military Advisor- My King, many of the nations we have met recently, have powerful armies. I suggest using our knowledge of iron, to make better weapons. Scouts have already been sent out to locate iron deposits.
King Gudea- Yes, we need to improve our military. A good front-line attacker to go with the mobile chariot, will balance out our forces. Inform me when the horses are corralled and iron has been found.

After looking over the scrolls listing the Alphabet and with techniques on Writing, Gudea called in the foreign advisor.
King Gudea- I wish to be in better touch with our neighbors and keep track of what they are up to. See to it that an embassy is built in every rival capital.

The foreign advisor quickly got to work and sent teams of ambassadors in all directions. Gold was sent with each team, so that they could purchase a building to operate out of.
(all embassies established)

this looks cool

1075 B.C.
King Gudea was surprised to see Gilgamesh and the military advisor running into the throne room, in a mad rush.
s41-ma_on_egypt.JPG

Gilgamesh- A group of Egyptian warriors apparently stayed behind, after Cleopatra left. They hid in the forest near Agade and are now pillaging outside the city. Other Egyptian forces can be seen in the distance, coming this way. I will go lead the defences at Agade, my King.
King Gudea- Take care, my friend!
s40-egypt_forces_moving_in.JPG

Soon after, the foreign advisor rushed into the room, knocking down several attendants.
Foreign Advisor- Cleopatra has declared war on us!
King Gudea- See if any of our neighbors will ally with us against Egypt. Pay anything necessary to get this done. Well, almost anything.

The embassies the foreign advisor had recently established, came in very handy in this situation. A total of five nations were willing to enter into a military alliance with Sumeria.
s41-otto_ally.JPG

Foreign Advisor- Great One, several nations have allied with us against Egypt. All of them required bribes, in order to side with us. The Hittites asked us to hand over too much, so I withdrew from that deal. Mursilis wanted our entire treasury and a tribute paid to him for every year of the war.
Military Advisor- The Egyptian warriors have been taken care of and the rest of their forces have turned around and left the area. Cleopatra must have recalled them to defend her empire.

950 B.C.
s47-horses_connected.JPG

King Gudea- It will be good to finally have some offensive forces!

Several nations finish some Great Projects-

875 B.C.
s51-math_learned.JPG

King Gudea- Good enough, but your funding is going to be temporarily reduced, so you will have to make do.

The science advisor nodded and was leaving the room, as the military advisor arrived.
Military Advisor- With the knowledge of Mathematics now open to us, we can figure out how to build and use catapults. We could employ some similar to what the Hittites are using.
King Gudea- Maybe we could build a really, really large catapult and from here, launch a stone at Cleopatra's head!

They both laughed and then quietly discussed the growing Sumerian military.

800 B.C.
Foreign Advisor- Carthage and the Ottomans have forsaken our alliance and made peace with Egypt.
King Gudea- Let us hope they don't turn on us, seeing how they both are our closest neighbors.

When Gudea finished speaking, he looked up to see the military advisor smiling at him.
Military Advisor- Your Majesty, iron has been found in the mountains, north of Ur. A camp has been set up to mine and develop it.
s52-iron_colony.JPG

King Gudea- Very Good! Things are looking up.

750 B.C.
King Gudea, Gilgamesh and all the advisors stood around the table, staring at the scroll laid open there. The science advisor had called it a world map and it showed the locations of all known nations and their territory. This would help tremendously in knowing where the Sumerian empire could expand, the location of important resources and also in planning any warfare.
It all started when Hannibal's wisemen uncovered the secrets of Map Making. An offer was quickly made for the knowledge-
s53-trade_for_MM.JPG

King Gudea promptly traded for the world map of almost every nation and all the garnered information was compiled together on the scroll, that they were all currently looking at.

Sima Qian said:
Woah, I thought you said this was a continents map. Looks a lot more like pangaea + islands to me...

I went back to my first post and edited it.
You were right, I had wrote continents there. oops.

590 B.C.
Foreign Advisor- Your Majesty, all the alliances for the Egyptian war, have ended. Cleopatra was contacted and gave us her territory map, as a goodwill offering for peace.
King Gudea- It would have been nice to get more tribute than that, for her insolence, but it will do.

Gudea knew he really shouldn't wish for more than a territory map, cause it was all the other nations in the alliance, that had taken the brunt of her attacks. He sat there a while, thinking in silence, then had the military advisor brought in.
King Gudea- I would like a little room to expand and claim some territory, to the south. Draw up some plans, for a minor war with the Ottoman empire.
The military advisor's smile went from ear to ear. He left the throne room, already conceiving plans in his mind.

550 B.C.
Science Advisor- I've learned that Hammurabi has knowledge of Literature. My colleagues and I are all for anything that will help us in our research. It is our hope, that one day all of our cities will contain libraries.

A trade is made with the Babylonians-
s55-trade_4_Lit.jpg

As the trade is being wrapped up, the military advisor walks in and waits till the Babylonian officials are out of earshot.
Military Advisor- My King, I have drawn up a battle plan, for the attack against the Ottomans.

He unrolled the scroll and showed the plan to King Gudea.
s56-battle_plan_31.jpg

Military Advisor- We will attack the Ottoman towns of Konya, Uskudar and Iznik. All three will be razed to the ground and we will found new towns at the orange locations. At your word, we will push forward for additional territory, or we can hold there and await peace negotiations. The brown dotted line is where the Ottoman national border will be pushed back to.
King Gudea- Very good! You may attack, as soon as all assault groups are in place.

490 B.C.
The next time that a demand was made of Gudea, he had swore to himself, that he would refuse it.
s57-rome_demand_Lit.jpg

King Gudea- I'm not going to 'give' you anything!
Confident with his growing military, Gudea stood his ground and refused the Roman demand.
s58-rome_dclares.jpg

Military Advisor- Our military is weak, when compared to the Romans. This will set back our attack on the Ottomans.
King Gudea- It's okay, I have an idea. With Carthage sitting between us and the Romans, maybe they could act as a shield for us. We will bring Carthage and the Ottomans, into an alliance vs. the Romans. The Ottoman forces will head east, and we will continue with our plan of attacking them.
Foreign Advisor- Breaking the alliance, when we attack the Ottomans, would not be wise. No one would want to ally with us in the future.
King Gudea- Then an alliance with just Carthage will have to do. And for the time being, we give in to no demands!
s59-carth_ally_vs_rome.jpg

450 B.C.
Domestic Advisor- Egypt has completed work on a project they call 'The Great Library'.

430 B.C.
Military Advisor- My King, our assault groups are almost in position, but some Ottoman forces are currently fortified in our territory.
s60-ask_otto_to_leave.jpg

King Gudea- Demand that they leave, then attack them while their backs are turned.
s61-otto_declares_war.jpg

410-370 B.C.
The gathered Sumerian military easily overwhelmed the few Ottoman warriors and archers, as the two nations clashed at the territorial border. The Sumerian assault groups then headed towards their targets- Konya & Uskudar.
s62-uskudar_razed.jpg

s63-konya_razed.jpg

350 B.C.
Domestic Advisor- Byzantium has built a Colossal bronze statue over the harbor of Constantinople. The Romans have finished a great Mausoleum, dedicated to the ancient King Mausollos.

330 B.C.
Foreign Advisor- Some Ottoman emissaries have requested an audience. Will you see them?
King Gudea- No, kill them!

Domestic Advisor- Great One, two towns have been founded in the area the Ottomans 'vacated'.
s64-2_new_cities.jpg

King Gudea- Persuading them to give us a little breathing room, has been rather easy, wouldn't you say?
.

There were a few turns when I didn't need any more military units and was paying a lot of upkeep. Once a few more towns were established and a few cities in the core grew in size, the unit support went down, then the cities on wealth went back to unit building.:)

Did you make the map? Because its really weird...pangaea with islands, btw, what are the map settings?:)

@Smart- at that point in the game, only 1 building could be built in most towns, which was the library. Was researching at minimum for a while and did not need the libraries built yet. Got to the point where I had a large military, and put a few cities on wealth for a few turns. Started the war, lost a few units, founded a few more cities and then all the 'wealth' cities went back to unit production.

@Ansar_the_King- Actually the pangaea part of the map is the random part. I added the islands in the center, and a couple of more islands that can't be seen yet. I think the settings were 70% pangaea, wet, warm, 5B and then a few added islands.
