Why is that everyone immdiently thinks "Nazi!" whenever they see that symbol? It is a hindu and buddhist symbol as seen in the second picture. It was also used frequently by greeks and romans. It can also be seen on the upper left of the current Flag of the President of Finland.

This is why.

When you say "everyone" you actually refer to Westerners, where nazis had the buggest impact. A lot of people in Asia do not think "nazi" when seeing a svatiska...

Most people are ignorant. When they see skin heads thay automaticly assume nazi too.

Because there weren't no bloody Greeks Romans, Hindus, Buddhists, or Finns in "Springtime for Hitler". :smug:

I know the vast majority of Japanese think "Oh, a buddhist shrine", when they see a swastika on a map. It's the recognised cartographic symbol over there, apparently.

Nazi=evil, Swastika=Nazi, therfore by transitive property Swastika=evil. That's what most people think anyway. To me a Swastika is a symbol. It is just that in most contexts for Westerners it is a symbol for the Nazis.

OK, maybe they don't think about the transitive property of equality but you get the idea.

I'll confess I've been known to sterotype this symbol as well. Recently, I had to do a research paper on the Falun Gong and when I saw their flag, I immediately thought Nazi.

Whats a swatika? :p

On a more serious note, i dont generalize, but if you see the swastika on a nazi flag, that looks much different then the other swastikas.

So its easy to see the difference.

The reason why 'everyone' thinks 'Nazi' when they see the swastika is because that was its most infamous incarnation. At least in the West; I can't speak for the East.

You have a good point, but still... We can reasonably assume that a swaStica is Nazi based. 99% of the time, it is not a Hindu or Buddhist symbol. The graffiti you see is overwhelmingly Nazi-based. So technically you're right, but practically you're wrong.

99% of the time, it is not a Hindu or Buddhist symbol..

So china and india having the world largest concentration of people and having swastikas represents less then 1% of all swastikas?

In the west I'd say thats still a little exaggerated but the point is applicable.

I'm glad I wrote post #3, because since a lot of people read it, they avoided posted the same thing in the rest of the thread.

/sarcasm.

But you misspelled biggest in your post #3 so you point has been missed. :p
