The Tribal Elders of Delphi

Leonidas finally bounced back from the sickness that had kept him bedridden for months and he didn't like how things developed in Apollonia, with news coming in every day about continuing strikes and uprisings in the city far west. The fact that the news that came were delayed by weeks due to the undeveloped infrastructure in the western parts of the kingdom didn't make him worry any less. Was his wife Alexis still alive in the midst of all the chaos? He knew the secession movement had been founded in anger towards him and his faction, and Alexis was the only member of the Siomaios family still in the city. If she only had moved to Delphi Nova with him, but she had insisted not to because her parents lived in Apollonia and she liked the sea so much.

Another thing Leonidas didn't like was his son-in-law's acceptance of the secession when it was first brought to the Chief Minister's attention. Delphi was a force to be counted with, surely they could demand the aristocrats of the city step down - even the citizens of Apollonia themselves seemed to prefer belonging to Delphi. So when his Delphi Nova residence neighbourhood Kenetrios chose to be represented by the Siomaios faction after the banishment of Eurydice's loyal Synedroi, Leonidas entered politics once again as a Synedros loyal to Chief Minister Filippos. It was a new feeling to sit in the Synedrion not as a faction leader, but instead loyal to his own son-in-law. And the change he wanted was provided, when Leonidas used what power he had within the faction to urge the Chief Minister to present new tactics on how to handle the Apollonian secession.

(OOC: Leonidas is alive and well, albeit getting old and probably a little fragile after his long illness. He is the Filippos-loyal Synedros elected by the neighbourhood of Kenetrios in the by-election and he is the man behind getting Filippos to make the statement I posted earlier today.)

The bloodshed had not been as great as expected. Many of the protesters fled when the spearmen charged, and only a small number were cut down by the trained soldiers. The rest of the crowd melted away into the streets, terrified and angry and pondering their next acts of defiance.

Word flowed out through the neighbourhoods that the Baron had offered good wages for citizens to join a new military force: a baronial militia. There was also the tantalising promises of land on offer to militia-men who provided outstanding service in the proposed unit.

Before too long men in their hundreds had signed up. Careful observers would note that they were primarily sourced from the neighbourhoods that weren't in open opposition and defiance to the new regime.

In those rebellious communities men and their families risked ostracisation or even violence if they even appeared to be supporting the illegitimate regime in such a way. To these people, it wasn't even just that their fellow country-men had been killed. Or that the city had been taken from the protective bosom of the Delphian Kingdom.

No, it was that the Baron and his aristocratic allies had personally betrayed the Basileus of the Delphians. This is what they found unforgivable.

But as the days stretched into weeks, slowly and surely the baronial militia grew in strength. A showdown was inevitable. Could the bands of farmers and labourers hope to contend with a homegrown armed force that could be used against them at any time?

What the Baron's next moves would be none bar his inner circle knew.

And in the east there was agitation for military intervention to reclaim the lost city. From the Basileus down there were a great many in the kingdom who felt such action was needed to restore the nation's dignity.

The situation continued. What would happen next?

Really, really angry with the forum right now --- just ate my damned post.

Shorter version, because I'm not as happy now: Gurra's proposal passed the 24 hour Synedrian deadline which means it'll be happening.

Submissions for actions close in thirty-six hours. Get in your intended actions to me via forum, PM or Steam by then.

I'll get another update out after that time has passed.

I'm already in France so my ability is even lower to check how things are going.

Did you want to continue contesting elections or did you want to have Kirillos retire and play as one of his descendants when you return? :)

Let me know.

Within weeks the Barony was in a situation that could be tentatively termed as 'stable'.

Spearmen and militia had threatened the unruly populace into line. There were enough supporters of the Baron among the lower classes to act as a check against those who opposed him. And of course the aristocracy backed the Baron to the hilt, and their coin flowed to aid him in establishing his fiefdom that they saw as freedom from the un-Delphian character of the new dual-ethnicity kingdom. Some among the populace expected the Baron to send in the troops to slay the dissenting citizenry, but this did not come to pass and was written off by the baronial authorities as rumour-mongering.

The Baron's supporters distributed propaganda legitimising his rule to sway the undecided into accepting the secession of the Barony as a fait accompli. Town criers spread the message: anyone who opposed the Baron's legitimacy threatened the security and safety of all who dwelt in the Barony.

The Delphian Kingdom issued ultimatums of surrender. The Barony did not respond to these demands, but nor did they seek to escalate the situation. An uneasy peace lay between the Delphian Kingdom and its allies and the upstart Barony of Apollonia.

Before long the militias gave way to a proper baronial army. How it would stand should the might of the Delphian army invade was anyone's guess.

During the tense peace the Baron consolidated his grip on the city and recruited new troops to garrison the city. He had plans of making Apollonia a fortress city to rival any other in the world.

Meanwhile, back in Delphi, the Poles attempted to negotiate for Delphian cotton. Their offer was very low, but the Delphian negotiators managed to strike a bargain of the Polish paying six gold per year in return for the kingdom accepting their embassy, as well as securing Delphi's 'no' vote against the "marble ban" in the upcoming World Congress (clearly the Poles didn't realise this was how the Delphians intended to vote anyway!)

A deal where the Dutch offered free passage of Delphian troops in return for gold ended.

Embassies were exchanged between the Delphian Kingdom and the Despotate of China and the Shoshone Federal Republic. It was hoped that with this act relations would be improved between the kingdom and the other great continental powers. The Poles wanted too high a price for a Delphian embassy, however. Some blamed the eagerness of those who negotiated previously for accepting the Polish embassy too cheaply, but recriminations wouldn't change the reality of the situation.

The nearby Barony of Apollonia reached its first anniversy. The situation there had admittedly stabilised. It was said that the Baron's rule was brutal and dissent was threatened or brutalised, but it was impossible to get reports to confirm this.

Leonidas, the aging Synedros and former Chief Minister did not sleep much, distressed as he was at receiving no word of his wife's whereabouts or circumstances. He knew she would be considered to be a high value target should the regime there realise her identity. He had no way of knowing that the Baron's informants had already betrayed her to him.

In the meantime, though, the Delphian Kingdom mobilised a number of military assets. The Apollonian Council heard rumours of these actions and were convinced it would lead to war, and they attempted to fortify the city in any way they could. Unfortunately the productivity of the Barony was so low that it would be many years before the city would be better defended than it was at the time of the secession.

192

The Despotate of China wanted to trade with Delphi but wasn't willing to offer fair terms.

The Dutch wanted to renew an existing deal for a Delphian luxury in return for 4 gold per year. Delphian negotiators managed to talk the Dutch up to six gold per year and the deal was struck.

The Siamese city of Muang Saluang grew. The majority of its population were now adherents of the Delphian Hellenic faith.

Troop movements within the Delphian Kingdom intensified, aided speedily along in their travels by the Meldanian Highway. The Barony of Apollonia had only rumours to go on, but the situation still looked dire to he and his Council.

193

The Despotate of China completed the Globe Theatre.

In terrible news, the Poles secured an alliance with the Province of Quebec, at the expense of Delphi. This robbed the kingdom of not only a key ally against the other continental powers, but also against the upstart Barony.

Meanwhile the Barony of Apollonia grew for the first time since its declaration of independence three years ago. Things seemed to be looking up there, although war seemed to be looming as an ever-present threat on the horizon.

In Dostana a platoon of crossbowmen completed their training and headed west. The University of Dostana commenced construction.

194

The Dutch Protestant Order and the Delphian Kingdom continued an existing deal to trade Delphian cotton for 5 gold per year.

The Dutch also reached the Renaissance Era.

The first convening of the World Congress was held in Beijing.

The Dutch and the Poles together ensured the Arts Funding motion was passed by the Congress.

Meanwhile the marble ban was only narrowly defeated: the two Chinese delegates were blocked by the Shoshone and Delphian delegates. The tied vote was a close call indeed.

The Delphian Kingdom then proposed a "World Fair" for the next session of the Congress. The Poles were extremely grateful for this act.

Domestically, the University of Delphi was completed in the capital. Pursuant to the Chief Minister's orders, the city temporarily commenced construction on a temple.

195

Delphian researchers completed their investigations into Acoustics. Immediately work on the Delphi Novan temple was halted and work commenced on the Sistine Chapel. It was not expected to be completed for sixteen years.

The social policy of Oligarchy was adopted by the kingdom. The aqueduct of Delphi Nova was dismantled to make way for an improved, cheaper to maintain version.

The wisest men of the kingdom turned their attentions to the concept of a "compass" to aid with naval navigation. They expected to have results within four years.

Five years after the Barony of Apollonia had declared its independence, finally the official Delphian response came. And it came on swift wing: siege weapons and army formations approached from the east, via the incomplete Meldanian Highway and via the Province of Zurich.

The Baron, having now had half a decade to solidify his power base in the west, mobilised as much of the citizenry as was possible to prepare for war. He had some cards he could play, but he wanted to see how the Delphian forces approached and to properly assess their intentions before playing them.

196

Dutch Protestantism undertook a reformation, which mattered to adherents of that faith. But in the Delphian Kingdom and the Barony of Apollonia it went almost unnoticed, because war was upon them.

The brave Apollonian spearmen marched out to meet their former brethren. Their Delphian kin moved forward to meet them upon the field of battle.

A year after the Delphian troops had entered the realm, hostilities had not yet commenced. The Baron continued recruiting and preparing for war, and prepared to put into action his plans to take hostages in the event of a siege being laid down upon him.

197

The Barony had become isolated further from the rest of the world, with hostile troops foraging in the fields. It was the tense calm before the storm. Neither army seemed prepared to engage in hostilities just yet. Slowly but surely the Baron put into action some of his plans. Hostages were taken from the problem neighbourhoods, including high value targets he knew the Delphians would not want to see harmed. He sent out messengers to parley, but they were sent back without formal responses. Clearly the kingdom didn't feel a declaration of war was necessary, as they obviously still claimed the rogue city as an integral internal part of their territory.

Spoiler :
197%20Apollonia%20I.jpg

The Delphian army were surprised when the Barony's spearmen retreated to the coast, but not the safety of the city itself. Had their move to meet them been a feint? Or a bluff? It seemed impossible that the small city would be able to resist the forces arrayed against it, but the Delphians took no chances. They moved their armies to the edge of the city and moved their siege engines into position. The baronial spearmen were pelted by Delphian crossbows, but beyond that long-range attack neither army moved to engage the other.

Back away from the front lines of the civil war the University of Kirrha had been completed. The city turned its efforts to the establishment of an Artists' Guild.

The courthouse of Soukotai was completed which appeased the unhappy populace and reassured them that even under the Delphian foreigners justice would continue to be done (or at least seen to be done).

Either as a reward to the patient citizens of Soukotai or as a cynical ploy to keep them pacified, works commenced on a colosseum to entertain the masses.

198

It was at this point, when the Siege of Apollonia was about to properly commence that the unthinkable (from a Delphian perspective) occurred: two platoons of pikemen appeared seemingly out of nowhere and flanked the Delphian army, capturing civilian members of the pursuing supply train.

Spoiler :
198%20Apollonia%20I.jpg

((Yeah, I'm roleplaying this as the Baron's doing --- which is awesome because it's totally a sneaky tactical move he would approve of --- but it was actually a spontaneous game-generated event . . . the people in the Barony must be so unhappy that rebels spawned! But story-wise it was totally the Baron's cunning!))

The Delphian forces, torn between the city they were intent on liberating and this surprise flanking force, were unprepared for such a happening. But the Delphian general leading the expeditionary force courageously ordered his army to concentrate on both sides of the battlefield rather than retreating or turning back to protect their rear. Battering rams pummelled the city's ramparts, while swordsmen clashed with the spearmen defenders while another formation of swordsmen conducted sorties into the outskirts of the city itself before falling back, sustaining only minor casualties. The trebuchet and crossbowmen at the back of the army concentrated their firepower on the nearest of the pikemen formations, and the train of chariot archers tread dangerously close to the foe that could easier tear them to shreds in a brave move to act as distraction from the other ranged assets.

Spoiler :

199

The Siege of Apollonia had lasted for one year. As it entered its second year the Baron implemented his desperate plan. He sent messengers to the Delphian army informing them that he had rounded up hostages loyal to the Delphian throne that he would be killing in their thousands should the siege continue. Instead of causing the Delphian forces to falter it hardened their resolve. When that failed the Baron sent messengers informing the Delphi of certain important persons who they were holding prisoner, including the former Chief Minister's wife Alexis. These threats troubled the Delphian army, but did not cause them to lift the siege.

Spoiler :
199%20Apollonia%20I.jpg

At the rear of the army the Baron's flanking formations were swiftly dealt with and all of the captured citizens freed.

Battering rams devastated the outer city and the spearmen in the field were defeated. Not since the days of the Mad King Alexander the Great was there such a show of Delphian might. Blood flowed like rivers through the streets of Apollonia. A countless many had died. The urban fighting went from street to street, but slowly and surely the Delphian forces pushed the defenders back further and further into the heart of the city. After nine years it seemed that the Barony of Apollonia was coming to an end. There were rumours that thousands of civilians had been slain on the Baron's orders in the dying days of the siege, but how much was myth and how much was true would take some time to determine.

Spoiler :
199%20Apollonia%20II.jpg

Delphian soldiers battered down the reinforced door to the "throne room" where they beheld a most peculiar sight: the self-proclaimed Baron stood before his throne, pointing a crossbow at the back of an unarmed woman. Around the room were a dozen baronial crossbowmen, but not all of them were aiming their loaded weapons at the doorway; some of them seemed to be aiming for the Baron and the woman before him.

"Good afternoon, gentlemen," the Baron spoke in a surprisingly calm and cordial manner. "Allow me to introduce Alexis, wife of Leonidas Siomaios. I would very much appreciate an audience with your Chief Minister. Filippos from Primos is still the Chief Minister I presume."

The Delphian soldiers didn't answer, unsure as to how to proceed with a hostage situation and half a dozen crossbows aimed at them. Those among them with crossbows had the baronial targets lined up, but a standoff like this would either end with diplomacy or many deaths on both sides.

"I see you are not the loquacious types. As I said, I will speak with the Chief Minister or this woman and most of us here in this room die. And before you try anything inadvisable do be aware that my men have strict orders to not allow me to be captured alive. They will kill me to prevent my capture. I've sacrificed far too much for this country to surrender unconditionally, and I am quite prepared to die for my country. Are you prepared to answer to Leonidas should you be responsible for his wife's death?"

The former Chief Minister and faction leader still remained a dominant figure in Delphian politics. No one wanted to be responsible for getting his wife killed. But even if they had authority to arrange for an audience between the Traitor and the Chief Minister, it would take weeks for him to arrive.

Nevertheless, the self-made Baron was not in the mood for excuses. "Somebody send for the Chief Minister. Now."

So now we reach the thrilling conclusion to the secession crisis.

The Barony lays in ruins, recaptured by the Delphian Kingdom.

Alexis is being held at crossbow-point by the Baron, who is demanding an audience with the Chief Minister (who is probably a week or less away by horse with the Kirrha-to-Apollonian highway works mostly completed).

Chief Minister, the ball appears to be in your court. How will you deal with this situation?

I await your orders. :)

(Also, Compass has been researched. So let me know what you'd like to have researched next.)

Filippos was furious when he received the message from the western frontier. Apollonia had fallen in the hands of Delphi and that Baron dared confront him with more demands. He decided to ride out to Apollonia himself, and sent a messenger ahead saying he would grant Eurydice the audience. He also sent a messenger to the Royal Palace telling the Basileus that Leonidas Siomaios would be instated Chief Minister in his abscence.

Apollonia was not the beautiful city it had been last time Filippos visited the west, 10 years ago before the civil war when he visited to ask Leonidas for his daughter's hand in marriage. Now it was a city devastated by long siege and a bloody conquest, all because that Baron couldn't see what was best for himself. The city he saw from the back of his horse was a city of liars and traitors.

Eurydice Nepides had a smug smile on his face when the doors opened to his room with Filippos entering accompanied by two baronial guards. "Well well well, here he is at last. The Chief Minister of Delphi, what a pleasant surprise. Let's talk business.", the Baron said and sat down on his throne but Filippos made no movement and waited for silence to fill the room. "I am not here to deal with you. I am here to give an order. This city is a haven of filthy traitors and I can't have it, I won't have it! I am ordering this city to be burned down to the ground and take us with it, and on its ruins there shall be built a new city - a New Apollonia - where the people can start fresh."

Out in the city, the Delphian Army had been evacuating citizens and as Filippos spoke his last word Apollonia was set ablaze. Eurydice saw his barony be purged in fire and as it spread to his castle there was no way to save either him, the Chief Minister of Delphi, or Leonidas' wife Alexis. The burning of Apollonia was truly a sight for all the citizens who had been evacuated to the nearby hills, and on top of the wasteland it became they would come to rebuild the New Apollonia that was once again a city of Delphi.

When the news of the great fire reached the newly appointed interrim Chief Minister Leonidas, he was filled with sorrow and anger. He called for his secretary to write letters to his children, to Lysistrate who would inherit Filippos' estate for her son Seleukos and to Lysimachos who would be entrusted with leadership of the Siomaios faction, and then he ended his own life. Delphi had officially lost two Chief Ministers in only a month and the civil war was finally over.

After the death of his father and brother-in-law, Lysimachos stood as the leader of the Siomaios faction and as such he was appointed Chief Minister for the last year of the term before elections to the Synedrion would commence.

His first order of business was what to research next, a question that had been left hanging with the siege, burning, and reconstruction of Apollonia. He was new to politics and decided to listen to the advice of his colleague Kirillos Christides and issue an act for the kingdom's wise thinkers to pursue Chivalry as their next research project.

The shocks in the capital just kept coming with news of a series of arrests of highly-connected members of the Delphian Council.

Security forces had reportedly received a tip-off of a planned coup d'état by a number of prominent Councillors. It was alleged that they had planned to kidnap the Basileus to force him to use his sovereignty to disband the Synedrion and turn the kingdom over to Council rule.

It was believed that they despaired the eroding of proud Delphian traditions, including the decision to enfranchise "middle class" neighbourhoods, and that the Siamese now received equal voting rights to the Delphian aristocracy had been the final straw. They had intended to strike while the kingdom had a new and inexperienced Chief Minister, and while the army was distracted out west.

The Delphian Council, an institution that had been with the Delphi for time immemorial had become a mere formality with the Synedrion taking the role of government and a hereditary monarchy having made redundant the Council's ancient function of selecting the kingdom's monarch.

There were widespread calls for an abolition of the ancient body, given that it would have been the second time in half a century that Councillors had plotted against the Delphian monarch.

I would like to propose to the Synedrion that we adopt the following act:

Kingdom of Delphi Act

(1) The Delphian Kingdom hereby changes its official name to the Kingdom of Delphi.

It's nothing drastic but I think the latter form both looks and sounds better, aswell as is representative of the fact that this is a Kingdom of Delphi but of people not only of Delphian heritage.

Whether the Basileus wishes to retain his title as Basileus of the Delphians and the Siamese or change it to Basileus of Delphi should be left to the royal house to decide.

The last year had been a busy year of rebuilding and mourning. Countless thousands had died in the civil war at Apollonia. Even more had been rendered homeless by the dead Chief Minister's decision to raze the city.

From the ashes a New Apollonia had grown, with no expense spared to give the western corner of the Kingdom of Delphi a new lease on life. Works had been fast-tracked with the same soldiers who had torched and ruined the old city pitching in aid with the rebuilding effort. The new Apollonia even featured a colosseum to distract the troubled population from the traumas they'd endured under the Barony, under the siege and after the purifying fires.

The great Hellenic prophet had paid the city a visit and helped heal the multitude, and the state religion had firmly taken root, those foreign faiths of Catholicism and Protestantism banished for the time being.

The courageous fishing boat explorers were finally able to return to shore. They had finished their reconnaissance operations to the border of Chinese territorial waters but had not returned to Apollonia due to the uncertainty of the Barony. With the situation returning to one as normal they arrived at the New Apollonia.

With the new city firmly established, the Delphian army waiting for orders directing them where to go.

Spoiler :

For the kingdom as a whole, if it weren't for the civil war and the loss of two Chief Ministers in tragic circumstances, things couldn't be better. Trade and diplomacy with the rest of the continent was slowly but surely normalising. The Royal Treasury was overflowing with coin, research was pushing to new heights, the people were contented and happy, a treasonous Delphian Council plot had been foiled, the Basileus was healthy and had many heirs and people were looking forward to putting the past decade behind them and getting on with their lives. Even the Province of Quebec had abandoned their alliance with the Poles and returned to the Delphian fold.

In advance of the scheduled Synedrian elections the former Chief Minister Kirillos Christides declared his imminent retirement from political life and announced he would not be re-contesting his seat in the Synedrion. Political friends and rivals all saluted him for his many years of dedicated service to the people of Delphi, and he would be missed.

An administrative error in the World Congress had led to people believing that Arts Funding had actually been adopted, but the embarrassed Chinese authorities were later forced to announce a retraction and correction that it had not passed the Congress after all.

However news from the neighbouring Dutch nation gave warmongers pause for thought:

200%20Pointy%20Sticks.jpg

This revelation alone from the Dutch lands would make the upcoming election campaign very interesting indeed.

DelphianSeal.png

Okay, so I'm not quite ready to launch the next election campaign just yet. I need to finish up some back of house calculations, and Wyverncraft needs to announce his new character.

In the meantime, here's the savegame.

You may notice some discrepancies between the savegame and the 199 post above. If so: congratulations. :) The kingdom is happier, is slightly more technologically developed, has more gold and is all in all better off than what had been shown previously (because this version of the save is the "pure" one, where Apollonia actually remained with the kingdom so we didn't lose out on science, etc.).

Some oddities, though, have occurred: Arts Funding, which had passed for some reason didn't in this 'true' version of events. The Poles did accept our embassy. A deal was for 5 GPT instead of 6, and the Poles never bothered allying with Quebec City.

I am intending to launch the new election campaign tomorrow night sometime before this time of day.

In the meantime, have fun with the save. :)

The civil war had decimated the Siomaios family - Leonidas, Alexis and Filippos all gone. Lysistrate welcomed her brother Lysimachos to the estate that was now hers in Primos, meeting with the family and faction members that were still alive. Lysimachos had held the title of Chief Minister to the Basileus for a year and he was well respected by his men, for he had always listened to the advice of his fellow Synedroi before acting - something the now dead Filippos from Primos hadn't taken the time to.

They met in Lysistrate's garden, all Synedroi loyal to the faction. Lysimachos and his sister stood up in front of the crowd when the Chief Minister spoke:

"Friends! Family! It is wonderful to see you all gathered after all that has happened this last year. Delphi has changed forever after this civil war, and just like Apollonia had a rebirth so should our faction. Many of our most dear friends died due to this civil war, not the least our founding father Leonidas. It is with a heavy heart I, and my sister Lysistrate, move on and we have news to share with all of you."

That is when Lysistrate took to the floor, "The Siomaios faction is no more, no, from this day the two of us lead the Neo-Dualist Party and we hope that you, my brother's loyal Synedroi, will follow us on this journey. We seek the appointment of Lysimachos and I as dual Chief Ministers of Delphi, and to take Delphi out of the shadows of civil wars and into a bright, golden age of domination. We look to the north and see the weak heathen Netherlands and we say, they don't deserve that land! We shall burn their temples and take their treasures, and Amsterdam shall be ours within our lifetime."

Lysimachos then continued to say "We would also like to share with you that Lysistrate and I will get married this summer, and you are all invited. I will adopt her son Seleukos as my own, and may the Gods bless our lives with great fortune. Thank you all for coming here today, now let's discuss the upcoming election campaign."

Two different ways.

When looking at it from the Baron's point of view, I simply deleted all the other Delphian cities and units to get the data for what it would be like to be an isolated city without trade routes, trade or allegiances.

When looking at it from the Chief Minister's point of view, I simply changed the ownership of the city to a city-state we haven't met yet, and set the status to 'at war'.

I effectively played this term out twice, once in the roleplaying version that you saw screenshots here, and once in the 'clean' version where the kingdom stayed intact but the army went for a walk out west. ;)

So we got to experience this exciting chapter without actually wrecking our longterm game situation.

Edit: I neglected to mention that all those changes I made above were by using the InGameEditor mod (I just photoshopped out the logo to not give it away!).
